Mostly wanting to hear from teaching pros.  I have set aside some funds to put towards golf.  I am currently playing a set of MX-23 irons (not fit for me).   I will say there is nothing really wrong with them.  But, I got them in 2004 and based on the improvements I got after getting a pro fit/new driver, I am thinking I might see some benefits from getting new clubs and more specifically getting them fit and custom made. At a minimum I am thinking I will get my current clubs retro fit.  But I am afraid by the time I get new shafts and adjustments made I might as well buy new and take advantage of new technology.  I am also thinking I will get at least a 5 pack of lessons.  I don't have an endless piggy bank to take a lesson a few times a week or the time.  But I would like to take one lesson every other week (with my schedule it is tuff to plan stuff in advance) and that would give me some time to practice what is covered.

So here is the big question, do I take the lessons first so I can maybe fix some stuff in my swing and then get fit for clubs with my "newer" swing or get fit have perfect clubs for me to take full advantage of the lessons?

If this helps: I played a fair amount of golf through college and shortly after.  Got down to a 15 handicap.  Got married, had kids ect, didn't swing a club for over 5 years.  Been back in the game for about 3 months or so and loving it.  Happy to be back in a place in my life were I can get out once a week or so plus a trip or two to the range.  Currently have about 15 rounds in since the break.  Tacked the last 8 rounds with an estimated 20 handicap.  Still knocking out cob webs especially in the short game.

Appreciate I am not a pro but if you were a 15 handicap and your getting back towards that then you have a half decent swing to begin with, its not like your a complete newbie to the game shooting well over 100 where i would say custom fit clubs might not be the best first move.

In your case though I would highly recommend it, especially as your handicap was around the same level as mine is now, I found custom clubs to be of great benefit, not just to my game but to my confidence as well. I would suggest finding yourself a pro who does lessons and  club fitting and explain to him your goals, that way when he fits the clubs he will have in the back of his mind where you want to be so may fit the clubs to suit a potentially improved swing instead of fitting to the exact swing you have now if that makes sense?

The thing to also consider are things like driver flex, iron lies etc, if these are out, is there much point in shelling out for lessons where these may hold back your progress?

Thanks carpe4300, someone else mentioned that as well.  But I was hesitant based on not wanting someone who does club fittings as a "side job" rather then a expert at a specific club fitting location. I live on the west coast in socal, so I am fortunet to have several of the major manufactures close by plus 2 of golf digest top 100 fitters less then a hour away.  So I was planing on getting fit by one of those options.

Is that the way to go as far as getting fit or does it not really make a difference?

I got fit by a local shop using a trackman and they fitted me with the right loft and right shaft etc and my shots really improved (with my driver) but it transpired to be fit for that swing, so now im swinging faster and better its not the best it could be, but its not far off

Thats why i mentioned choosing a pro to do lessons with that can also fit your clubs, he may look at your numbers and be like "this club you have is not right for you, but neither is this one however with lessons it will be for XYZ reason"
