I am awaiting delivery of my Ping G15 irons with reg graphite shafts. I bought these for 2 reasons, one being they create less impact on my shoulders and elbows, and secondly they give a bit more distance. I have bought a set consisting of 6-SW, as I already have a 3/4/5 hybrid. My question is, is there a big enough gap in distance between the 5 hybrid and the 6 iron, or will I need a 5 iron ?

In my bag (Motocaddy Light)

Taylormade Burner driver, Taylormade 4 wood, 3 x Ping Karsten Hybrids, 6-SW Ping Karsten irons with reg flex graphite shafts. Odyssey putter, 20 Bridgestone e6 balls, 2 water balls for the 5th hole, loads of tees, 2 golf gloves, a couple of hand warmers, cleaning towel, 5 ball markers, 2 pitch mark repairers, some aspirin, 3 hats, set of waterproofs, an umbrella, a pair of gaiters, 2 pairs of glasses. Christ, it's amazing I can pick the bloody thing up !!

I would wait until you get the set to determine that. The 5H may give you more distance or just higher launch. I use a 4H and 5 iron and the gap is about the same as with the 4 iron. But the hybrid launches higher than the iron and lands softer.

If you find the specs sheets and compare the loft/shaft length of the 6i and your 5H, this might give you an idea. But, best way is always to do a side-by-side and see what the distance gap is.

Not an expert myself, but if you find that there is an unfavorable distance gap between the two clubs, would it not be possible to choke up, or down on one the clubs to solve the problem?

My 5-hybrid to a Ping G-Series 6-iron has the correct yardage 'gap' for me.  The 6-iron goes 150-155 and the 5-brid about 160-165.  Off a tee on par 3s, I can squeeze perhaps a bit more from either club.  Only difference is that the 5-hybrid delivers a more repeatable result than the Ping 6i.  No idea why I can flush the 7-iron 7 of 10 swings, but the 6-iron off the fairway isn't as reliable.  The 5-hybrid is 'money' from that 160-170 yard range.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
