Would anyone say having an optishot 2, or other simulator, in the house would help a learner with his/her quest to becoming a competent golfer? I don't have loads of room but at mo am spending probably £25-40 a week at the range on buckets of balls, if I was sure I could save by investing in a simulator I'd definitely consider it but would these help or hinder?

@ your current $30-50 (USD) per week this is the order I would consider:

1. Local golf club that has free range balls as a perk with a membership (which is what I do, @ ~$500/year, free weekday greens fees so walking is free, and a bucket of balls every day for free)

2. See if any municipal courses or even semi-private courses have a "range pass." At your current usage rate, it may work out cheaper.

3. I wouldn't consider Optishot 2. Some people say it's good, some say bad. I'm one that says it's not good. I bought one and ended up putting it on ebay. At your current spending I would consider the Skytrak. I believe they have their $300 promo discount still going on to put it at $1,700 (USD)?

Is perceived wisdom regarding the SkyTrak system that it is a decent replacement to a real range? Looks really interesting and if I could do the maths to justify the spend if I cut back on driving range spends could pay for itself?

*edit*just had another look and the $300 is US only deal which hurts as a limey???

I have a Skytrak since Dec 14th and have hit about 1000 balls  so far. Shot dispersion is already tightening up and the distances are the same as what I know my clubs to go on the course. I think it's a good investment if you intend on using it every day. I only hit about 50 to 100 balls in a session since it's a flight of steps away. I don't have to to make the most of it like when I drive out to the range.

I never had an Optishot but I had a p3 pro swing.  At the time I got it, the p3 pro swing and the optishot (it was actually called 'Dancin' Dog' then, lol) were about the only things going for affordable home use and the p3 pro swing was supposed to be the better.  It was more expensive, as I recall.  Anyway - it's crap.  I used it for a few months and then set it aside.  I took it out every once in a while for the next few months, probably, and then just forgot about it.  I am pretty sure it got tossed at the last garage clean-out..or maybe it's still around somewhere.

Anyway..it didn't give very much information and most it was calculated.  It could only detect swing speed and path - if you topped it, for example, it had no idea.  There were misread issues, as well.  I think the swing speed was probably pretty accurate.  I really want a cool simulator.  They keep getting cheaper - the Sky Trak caught my attention but I'm not 100% sold . .it's reasonable for what it is . .but it's still a lot of money.  If GC2 could be had for the price of SkyTrak I'd already have one.

IMO - optishot, p3proswing, things that you clip on your clubshaft, etc . .are mostly toys...and, at least in the case of p3 pro swing, not even a good toy, lol.

I think the cheapest home option that is still accurate is probably flightscope xi which is 2500. They have a indoor mode so if you have enough space (see their site for details) then the setup would work. Plus side is you can play all you want and if u get sim software then u can also play simulated 18 holes too.

I agree on the p3. I boughT one too. In a closet somewhere. Probably will put it on eBay for whatever I can get for it. Not worth much if you are looking for any kind of accuracy.
