Thank you for contributing to my first topic:Shot Making.

I would like this forum to be a learning area for all types of shots. Given the areas of the world and their different challenges, this should be interesting.

FYI- I have started a YouTube series called "Let Me See What Happens If I.." about shot making. I just launched Episode 3. Please enjoy and comment.

I would also like to see what you all have posted to learn from. Please tell me where I can find it.

Let Me See What Happens If I.. is a phrase I teach that you use when you encounter a situation you haven't tried yet and have no information on how to do it. For example: You're 110 yards from the front of the green in the right second cut. You need to hit a "left to right" around the bush to get there. The pin is 20 feet back. What shot do you hit? After taking in the environmental  info, you decide on a club and say "Ok. LMSWHII..take my 7 iron(example), use a three-quarter swing, slightly exaggerate the L2R spin, land the ball on front edge and roll up. LMSWHII do that. You swing, and whatever  the result, you have learned what or what not to do in that situation. This is an example of how to use this on the course and take it to the range to practice.

Please use this for advice or specific technique.

One of the biggest thrills in golf for me is facing a challenging shot which requires creative thinking on working the ball flight in unusual manners.

In my earlier years of golf, I seldom played from fairways and was challenged with advancing the ball towards the green.
Those experiences tested my imagination and creativity and made me a better player.
I soon learned the difference between impossible and possible and when to take my medicine.

Every once in a while I'll be in a situation and my thoughts turn to "let's see if I can pull this one off"
One shot I've got down pat is a low shot on an uphill hardpan lie that will rise slowly and then draw.

It's one of the "get out of jail free cards" I carry in my bag...  :-)

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
