Hi everybody, hope you are well.  I had a question and wanted to get some viewpoints.  I have been taking lessons for a couple months and I don't agree with some things that my instructor has me doing.  I had a early wrist hinge and they are set on me not hinging until very late in my backswing.  The problem is that when I keep in a one piece take away my body wants to sway back a bit which causes a few problems.  Second, they want me to not move my lower body at all.  I had a very long swing (past parallel) and they want me to like literally not turn my lower body back at all.  I can do that and I still get the club to about parallel but I feel stuck, like I can't explode forward at all.  The combination of these is causing me fits and I'm flipping the club at impact increasing my dynamic loft way to high.  What should I do?  How do I approach this, they are set on me doing things this way but it's just not working at all for my body.  I really like my instructor, nice guy but the changes are just not working for me. Just some background, I swing my 7 iron between 97 and 100mph, my handicap sits between a 3 and 5.  Thanks for any help/comments.  Hope you have a great day.

Welcome to The Sand Trap @zpack4.

Sounds like you are not satisfied with your instruction. This is the reason many of us found The Sand Trap.

We have a couple of ways to help. First, we have a Members Swing section where you can post video of your swing. Forum members with help you with suggestion and point you toward instructional threads like the one below. This one discusses a way to remove sway in the back swing.

I highly recommend the Member Swing area. Some of the people on the site are top level instructors. And many of the members have had similar issues and will give good advice on how they improved on those issues.

We also have an instructional content section. This section contain loads of information.

Lastly, if you don't like your instructor and have trouble finding a good one, as many of us did, you can try Evolvr, which is an on-line instruction site. With Evolvr, you send in video and get great instruction at your own pace. It costs a lot less than in person instruction. There are touring pros who use Evolvr BTW.

Best of luck!

I think the answer is obvious.  Talk about these issues with your instructor.  If his answers don't alleviate your concerns, break up with him.   Whether he's right or wrong, if you don't believe in what he's trying to teach you, it won't work.

Agree with all of the above.

If I were you, I'd take up one of @boogielicious's suggestions of a swing thread:

https://thesandtrap.com/forums/forum/13-member-swings/

You post a couple good videos with some notes about your concerns, and you'll likely get some more specific feedback. Once people see your swing, that could give them more of a sense of where your priority should be. Then it'll be up to you to weigh that expertise against the expertise you're getting from your current instructor.

From what you've written about the instructor discouraging you from turning your lower body, that seems quite contradictory to the teaching philosophy I've become familiar with. That would raise a red flag for me. Pretty much every good golfer has a nice centered turn of hips/shoulders.

Also:

I was reading that thread recently and the consensus seems to be that setting the wrists early is not something that is going to necessarily be detrimental to you. For an instructor to single that out and make you fix it (when you're comfortable with that). Hmmm. Seems like he may be a one-size-fits-all type of teacher, and that he is not prioritizing things in a way that identifies your key issues first.

(I'm no instructor, of course, just a guy who has picked up info along the way)

Good luck!

    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
