Finally played Fowler's Mill, a Pete Dye design completed in 1970 for the TRW Corporation. It lies in NE Ohio near the village of Chesterland, just east of Cleveland.

This post might also belong on the "What did you shoot today?" page, because a course like this will bring reality home to roost very, very quickly!

You can't get away with the tiniest little mistake on a course like this and expect to score! It's just not going to happen!

Admittedly, this was our first time playing the place, but I can promise you, it won't be our last! The conditioning was outstanding. Like a country club! The turfgrass was immaculate, and the greens were fast, rolled true, and were consistent. But, get above the hole, you take your chances!

Maybe the best of all, we were able to find, via Golfnow, 18 holes w/cart at $26 per man! Hard to beat compared to many areas of the country.

We'll go back, not only because we played on a cold, grey day that spit a needle fine rain at intervals, but because we enjoyed the experience so much. This course is hard! Especially for first timers! We want to experience it when it's firm and fast!

But, if any of you are in NE Ohio with some time to kill, and you want to play, I'd definitely suggest playing here!

Great to read this as this is one of my favorite all time courses.  I lived in Concord Township for a few years and worked in Mentor so Fowler's Mill was my home course.  I would play in the late evenings there and one time actually got locked in the Parking lot... they closed and pad locked the gait!.  I had to take apart part of the fence and drive over the grass to get out of the parking lot.  I love the set up but my favorite hole was probably the 3rd which wraps around a small lake.  Its a dog-leg right with the lake on the entire right side.  If you were a bomber you could hit straight across over the lake to the green but its a very long carry... 250 or 260?  So you chose how much of the dogleg you want to cut off and then your second shot is also over water to a peninsula green.  Great hole with a lot of challenges and two shots you have to carry over water.  So peaceful on that hole also... a lot of water fowl and wildlife on the course and no houses except in the distance along 1 hole.  Not sure if it's still like that since I was last there in 2004.  I often try to find excuses to go back to NE Ohio just so I can play Fowler's Mill... and go to Cedar Point!

The hole you're remembering is #4. And yes, it's a tough booger! We stood on the tee, looked across the lake at the green and said, "OK, who wants to make the "scramble" shot across the lake!"

I don't have the distance to cover that anymore! And yes, the course is as quiet as you experienced it. Not at all like playing through a housing development!

We played the "Lake" and "River" nines this time. Next time, we may include the "Maple" nine across the road. A local publication says it's an absolutely beautiful nine holes of golf!
