Quote

Sandy Tatum will be remembered for many things, principally, and perhaps unfairly, for his course setup for the ’74 U.S. Open that infamously became known as the Massacre at Winged Foot. Equating Tatum with a massacre does not represent the quality of the man.

He was almost 97 years old.

Wow.  I knew who he was, but not that much about him prior to that read.

This really stood out: "[Tom] Watson credits Tatum with selling him on the joy of links golf."

Not to claim that as Tatum's biggest accomplishment, but Tom Watson is a name I will always think of with links golf, and to think this is the man who got him to there.

Wow! That's how I'll always think of Watson. Braving Scotland's elements with the big goofy bucket hat on, and the slightly insane grin, all the while hiding behind Bruce Edwards and the big, red & white Ram umbrella! Nice to think that the seed was planted by Sandy Tatum!

I think The Open Championship might be my favorite tournament of the year.
