I've used a Yes! Callie putter for a few years now and have generally enjoyed it.  However, I'd like to upgrade a bit to something a bit nicer.  After having spent years looking at the neat restorations at the Cameron site, I'm really interested in finding a used Scotty and having it restored/refinished to my liking.

So, with that in mind, what are some of the older Scotty's that can be had for $100 or less?  I see a lot of Circa 62's floating around.

Thanks in advance,

Chappy

Do you care more about getting a "Scotty Cameron" or more about getting the best putter to suit your game?

Scotty's are nice, but nothing really all that special. Of course I have not seen the newer ones since I was managing the database for Scotty Cameron back when the original Newport's were coming out and Titleist was still sponsoring the likes of David Duvall, Davis Love III, and one other whose name escapes me (Senior moment here). The big thing back then were the inserts which were placed in by a sub contractor. Another company did the black anodizing, and still another the graphics. Acushnet only assembled them at our plant on Mission Ave in Escondido. The company has since moved to Carlsbad. Interesting note, that back when Tiger was still an amateur, he and his dad visited the plant. The dad fell asleep in the maintenance shop behind some plastic curtains. One of the tour pros had a brother employed in the R&D department (again, senior moment and the name just doesn't come to me right now). The pro did not play for Titleist, I want to say Curtis Strange, but I know it is not him, but probably from that era. Tall guy, mustache, short hair. ???

(getting old is hell).

AH...just came to me...Corey Pavin. His brother is John Pavin.

@iacas:  I have a daily putter that I'm in love with (Odyssey #9) and it won't be replaced in my bag in any meaningful round anytime soon.  This is more about having something fun to restore and use periodically.  Call it a project, I suppose.  Just be fun to have an old stick laying around to toy with.

Fair enough.

I'd start scouring eBay, then. There will be some cheaper than others, but they're like the Detour (the original ones), which you probably don't want. :-)

haha, yes, that's probably true.  See, this is what happens when I try to incorporate my "tinkering" nature around the house and on my cars into golf.

Appreciate the insight.

Check Craigslist too.  A lot of pro's and cons but you can tell a real club person from a thief usually.

I have a couple.  One Tei 3 Newport the pro i work with gave me.  His kid had been using it as a shovel in the yard.  I was using an Anser at the time.  I stripped what was left of the finish, cut it to length and used it.  It looked awful.  I ended up, like u, seeing refinished ones on forums and sent mine off the BOS and had it restored to original for under $100.  Best thing ever!

I still can't believe how good it looks.

I recently bought the long neck version from a person on Craigslist...it's real, that he found in the trash at the range.  Finish was crap, which seems to be par for the course with the original finish on these needing a lot of care.  Anyway, I don't really use it.  This coming winter I'll send it to BOS to have it refinished.  Great investment!

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
