I have a painful left hip.I know the conventional wisdom calls for much weight on the left foot when chipping , but if I do this during a round, I'm in a lot of pain for the next 2 days . Does anyone have any alternative, and if I simply try to keep the weight evenly distributed , should I make any other changes?  I try to keep the hands slightly ahead of the ball, and play the ball back in stance . thanks

I would take a stance that's comfortable for me then practice hitting from that position so I got my aim down and comfortable with it. If it's repeatable for you go with what's comfortable that keeps you playing
