I'm just starting out and looking at buying a use set of irons to get started with at around $100. I've hit some different sets at a couple golf retailers near me, Roger Dunn having the most used sets.

If I'm honest I think I do prefer the feel of some of the more modern GI irons, but in the $100-150 area I feel like I preferred the Mizunos even though I don't really know why. Might just be the look of them.

Now my issue is trying to figure out if a set is playable or not.

For instance here's a 5-PW set of MX-23s that I was thinking about (about $100), but I do't know if their in good enough shape to use. These would mostly be used at the range and eventually on a course if I make it that far.

Hello. What condition are the grips in? If they're shot...you'll have to factor in that cost. I understand the 'look factor' and it can certainly be important when choosing clubs. It's hard to hit a club you don't like looking down at...at least for me. If you're just starting out and wanting to keep your spending at a minimum those Mizuno irons will be fine as far as club face condition. What you don't want is spacing at the ferrule, bends in the shaft, rattling. There  are much more qualified equipment gurus on this forum than me but for $100 I'd be fine with those from those pics.

The clubs are probably fine, the person who owned them was a really good ball striker. :-)

If you use standard grips they'll cost about $40 for you to change at $4/grip depending upon the shop. Some placed don't charge if you purchase them from the same store.

Have you purchased and value irons from global golf? I see them recommended a lot, but I don't want to end up with something I don't like the condition of and have to pay the return shipping fee, plus the wait time.

Value irons from globalgolf are actually in pretty good shape all things considered. Very playable.

I bought an iron set from them 4-PW of Titleist AP2 710's, and I couldn't be happier.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
