Hello all- I have a set of irons handed down in the family that I have little info about (value, year, etc.) Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I'm not looking to unload them, just get more of the story.

They are First Flight clubs, with a wavy groove pattern on the club face. The shafts appear to be patterned like modern metal shafts, but are a pale yellow color. Grips are old and worn leather, gripped much further down the shaft than my rubber grips.

Anyone?

In the early days of steel shafts, they were colored like that to have a hickory/woodtone look. The name escapes me at the moment.

I am guessing those clubs were made between 1930 and 1940.

Are you thinking of PYRATONE shafts?

if you look at the hosel you can see the shaft is narrow going into it which indicates its the Pyratone coated steel shaft. A hickory shaft would have a much larger hosel and the shaft would actually get larger  as it went into the hosel as compared  to most of the length of the shaft. Those early steel shafts tended to be pretty stiff when compared to modern steel shafts but can be fun to play with when paired with some classic old persimmon woods and a nice bullseye putter!

These are great. Do you have the whole set? I have some hickory shafted irons and a steel shafted two wood that were my grandfather's .He played these back in the 30s and 40s.  I have them displayed in my den.
