I have a problem hitting my driver.  My buddies say I need to get golf balls that aren't afraid of heights.   I very rarely hit a driver where the flight is higher than 2-4 feet off the ground.  I've made ball position adjustments and have focused on trying to set up with my  right shoulder lower than my left shoulder.  Nothing seems to help.  I have a problem with casting the club on the downswing with an over the top move.  Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or how I can try to rectify.  I've taken a lot of lessons but just can't eliminate the over the top move.  Just thinking maybe there is a correlation between over the top and low driver trajectory.

I  suggest you go see a teaching pro for advice. He or she can look at your swing, examine your equipment (loft, shaft flex, etc.) and devise an action plan to get you on the right track.

I'm just curious, do you get distance without loft? When I was younger I'd scorch balls with very little loft, or late loft that would travel over 250 yards. But certainly not worm burner height, but not getting 20-30 or more feet of proper loft.

And what degree of loft is your driver. If you have a 7 degree driver and a slower swing, that could be it.

Assuming your driver is a decent fit for you (length, loft, shaft flex, etc. - and there's a good chance it isn't if you weren't fitted) then, I have one word for you my friend: LAG.

If you learn to lag the driver it will do miracles. You don't even have to swing hard. I was exactly the same as you, struggling with my driver, doing different set-ups, shoulder up/down, feet flared/offset, forearms together, tension-free, etc. All kinds of nonsense. Nothing worked except learning to lag the driver. I have a beautiful ball flight now, it looks like a jet fighter taking off, and I'm hitting further than I ever thought possible. The driver is now my favorite club.

Tee height could be a factor too.  At least half the ball should be above the face at address.  Move ball position up and try to release the club several inches behind the ball, assuming you have a somewhat orthodox swing.
