I currently play the Taylormade M2 2017 model Irons.  I love them.

Unfortunately the face slots have broke and fell out of my longer irons.

I contacted Taylormade today and they were very helpful.  They explained they found the defect and corrected the manufacturing of the club, so the recently manufactured irons do not have this issue.  Sadly, this was only corrected on the right-handed models.  I am a left-handed player.

The rep was outstanding.  He understood my concern getting more M2's.  Because they can not correct the problem for a lefty, they are offering to upgrade me to the P790's coming out this Friday or the M CGB's coming out later this month.

I went to my local Dicks, and they only had the right handed P790's.  They look slick.  I love that they are thinner as I've always felt most game improvement irons are too thick.  Sadly, I'm a 20 handicap and fear I will be doing myself a dis-service by purchasing the P790's, yet I feel I should just get them and learn to hit them.  The M CGB's are supposed to be a true game improvement iron set similar to the M2's.

There is limited information on the M CGB's, but I fear they will be have a larger top-line which I am not a fan of, yet I'm not sure I'm skilled enough to hit the P790's with all my off-center shots.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

@Rsuslow  Are they upgrading you for free?  If so, they probably just earned themselves a customer for life haha

As far as your decision, will they allow you to hold out until the MCGB irons are available for you to check out in person?  If so, I'd hold out a couple weeks and make the decision after seeing them both.

Keep us posted which you go with, and what you think of them!

I don't believe that slightly smaller clubs are all of a sudden crazy difficult to hit.  The P790s are marketed as having lots of game improvement features as well.  If it turns out to be true that you hit the CGBs better than the P790s, it will be to the tune of maybe 1 stroke per round at most.  So I say if you think you'll enjoy the look of one in your bag better, or the feel of the hit, definately just get it.

See if you can wait, and then decide after you check both out.

I'm sure they'll probably let you do that.

Yessir.  Free.  Which is amazing because it's like a $600 upgrade for the P790s.

I think they will let me.  I'm not exactly sure.  It wasn't really clear, but I think I'll have to ask so I can see if I can get my hands on a set before hand.

I love the look of the P790s and think I'd enjoy them if I learn to hit them well.  I read somewhere that sometimes it's good to step into a blade style and learn to hit those.  And as you mentioned, these have a lot of the GI features.

Thanks, I'm going to call a few of my local golf stores and a local course to see if they have them or when they expect them.  Then email the guy at TM and ask for a bit more time to get my hands on the CGBs.  I'd just hate to get a set I'm not happy with and a set I can learn to play well with.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
