Day 168 (17 Oct 24) - semi-monthly walking of nine holes today.  Went this morning after helping the wife with her students on a math project around assembly of a couple of storage shelf units (was a blast working with the kids).  Air was brisk but breezy (solid hurting wind going out, wee doggy helping wind coming back), course is fall pristine and not busy - played up as set of tees as I had 3w and 4h as the only long clubs, focus was on iron play.  Love these working on the swing, distance control sessions - that calls for focused course management.

Day 17 - 2024-10-17

I practiced for 20 minutes today while exaggerating the backswing and downswing stuff. Kept it short, hit the 6I about 120 yards.

Day 92: range session at lunch. Worked on driver a bit - needed to get the ball teed further forward. Filmed my swing as well. Then did a stack session.

Day 93: putted on my mat for a bit while working. Making sure the handle is more raised at address, and then just making a smooth stroke.

Day 169 (18 Oct 24) - Friday men's scramble - only 10 playing today so it was two threesomes and one foursome (older guys and chilly weather don't mix too well).  Anyway - solid day overall (won both par 3 closest to the pins - helps when you are the only one to hit the green on both holes) and was part of the winning team in terms of overall score.   Wound up winning enough to cover my scramble fee and cart fee with a $1 to the good.  Overall the round was solid - 8 of 14 fairways hit, 7 of 18 GIR (nice to have that kind of ball striking day), putting was a little off as I had 4 three putts (for a total of 36putts - a few strokes here or there and it would have been a sub-80 round!)  The greens were super slick (the greenskeepers are shooting for rolling on glass...that was from the mouth of one of them), which means if you were putting downhill and missed the cup you may be looking at an even longer uphill come backer (had a couple myself).  Really getting comfortable with the short irons and wedge play.  The latter was super solid as I had a number of up and downs for par that were less than 5' for the putt.  A good day of golf.

Day 18 - 2024-10-18

Bunch of yard work, so I stayed home and did mirror work.

Day 170 (19 Oct 24) - Left foot really hurting in the ball area (this is the rebuilt area of my foot from the transmet amputation from the 2016 motorcycle wreck) as too much time on it causes bruising and painful steps.  Wanted to get some work in so I hit a few chippy 7i’s into the net (focused on setup and keeping a putting type swing) - really takes torque off the left foot.  Finished up with the 54 using the same technique. Again working to keep a putting motion in these short chips/pitches.

Day 19 - 2024-10-19

Hit balls for about 25 minutes afterward. A shank was not great for the thumb, but I moved it to the front side of the grip just to finish up hitting without impacting it much.

Day 20 - 2024-10-20

Thumb wasn't feeling great (and stubbed it a bit in a way that, if it was my right thumb, I'd barely notice, but which I very much noticed on my left thumb), so I did some putting work and some mirror work in between watering the yard.

Day 171 (20 Oct 24) -  Left foot better today, got in a few swings into the net with 4i & 7i (old. Tommy Armour 845s).  These irons are still some of my fave irons to hit.  Wrapped up with time with the 845s 56deg Sw.  Focus was as usual - setup, alignment and keeping swing smooth. Good easy session.

    • I really like the video of the Chasing Scratch guys going to TPI. The TPI guy had him try to push himself using a swivel chair. You had to push and rotate the chair. I think it’s a decent representation of how the lead leg works.  Any athletic movement usually requires moving in the opposite direction in which you want to move first.  Yea, it’s tough when you have so many movements going in the golf swing. Lateral, vertical, rotation.

    • Day 281 - Worked on hitting my starting line with the putter. Also did a bit of pitching.
    • When I was shadowing/observing Larry Ward before my daughter played NCAA Nationals last year in Kentucky, one of his lessons involved trying to get the golfer to push harder with his left (lead) foot; to increase his vertical forces. The kid was trying for awhile, trying to "stomp" down into the ground and "land" with his weight into the ground. It wasn't working. I spoke up, and told him the way to push into the ground was to push against the ground, and you do that by trying to jump off of it, by shoving the ground downward by extending your hip, knee, etc. The golfer was almost trying to do it backward - he was trying to use gravity to do the pushing downward, when what he wanted to do was push himself upward. Golfers are generally really bad, in my experience, at understanding how ground reaction forces (GRF) work. For example, to push your left hip back more or to "clear" your hips in the downswing, you have to try to push the ground toward the golf ball. The ground doesn't move, though, so what does move is your left hip… in the opposite direction. For example, if you stand an inch from a solid wall, with your hands against the wall and your elbows fully bent, and you push against the wall by extending your elbows, YOU will move away from the wall. The wall — like the ground — isn't going anywhere. By pushing east, you move west. Ask a golfer to add force to their right foot… and they'll often shove themselves to the right, which adds force beneath their left foot. To be honest, it's one of the reasons that, despite having been one of the first people to own a SwingCatalyst, and owning a BodiTrak as well, we've not really used force plates in the past six years. (The other main reason is that they're a bit of a pain to set up.) This video does a pretty good job of illustrating a few things. I encourage you to watch it, should you have a lesson on force plates in your future.
