That is really surprising. I have been to a couple of pga events and have walked a with a something each day. One day I followed Jesper Parnivik. He was playing really well and I could tell that he just was envisioning his shot going down the fairway and onto the green and into the cup. It was a new way to look at playing the next time. That is how I see Mike Weir swing. I have never seen him play but I can tell it starts with his swing and how it feels in his set up.

Good take. I followed Nicklaus around the course the last time he won the Memorial. In the "social area" (beer stand) between the 14th green and 15th tee I was close to him He's about 3" shorter than me but he looked huge because of the look in his eye. That's what I want: Jack's concentration.

Best, Mike Elzey

I probably would. But right now I don't really copy anything from any pros swing. Maybe I should look. . .

I have always admired the swing of Davis Love III and try and picture it as I swing. I also imagine the swings of Ernie Els and Retief Goosen when I lose my groove. Faldo's swing is a thing of beauty as well as Sean O'Hair's.

I have my own swing. But I like to watch videos or Ernie's and Couples swings. I like Ernie's tempo and over all mechanics. I like to watch Couples swing, through impact. His lag with his writs is amazing to watch in slow motion.

When I am swinging well, I liken my swing to Fred Couples. We have the same build (kinda), and we both have the "strong left hand". Although, in reality, my swing probably looks more like Mr. X (Miller Barber), but hey, I'll take his scores!
Just remember what Dr. Dirt says... "Swing hard, in case you hit it!"

Even though I'm not as big as him - I try to swing exactly like Jaacob Bowden. My tempo is a bit fast than his and I think this is what I really need to work on.

I do look at which pros have body types similar to mine. I almost gave up on golf shortly after starting when I heard, many times on a range, that someone of my height (5'8 - 5'9) can't get good at golf. I kept with it because I enjoyed it, but the '06 Valero Texas Open changed all of this when I saw Anthony Kim's PGA Tour debut.

Since then, I kept watch on which players have bodies of my height and rough build, and I've been working to pack on weight, muscle, and flexibility. 5'8 may be able to do the job, but 5'8 115-120 lbs wouldn't.

Players with bodies similar to mine (height and rough proportions) include Charles Howell III, Ryuji Imada, Anthony Kim, Camilo Villegas and Corey Pavin. One of them has won a major and plenty of times on Tour. The others are going to before too long.

So it's not so much that I try to emulate their swings - admittedly, I think about J.B. Holmes when I'm driving, if I'm thinking of anyone at all - but that I see what players with my body type can accomplish. I'm not saying I'm going to go with a major, or even reach scratch (not that I'd complain about either happening!), but it's encouraging.

As for why I think about J.B. Holmes? I used to try to over-extend my driver swing to gain more distance. Then I saw his driver swing and realized the length of the backswing isn't always what gets you distance. So I was happy with my natural backswing, and I swing easy, and... well, you know the rest.

I would like to try the Ernie Els approach to the game, but after lessons I've found I have the ability to swing in line with Adam Scott. Which is in turn the old Tiger Woods swing, when he truly was on fire.

I'm working on now analyzing Scotts film from now and Wood's film from I believe 97-00 and trying to see where it is from 9 o'clock to impact so I can emulate to help with my contact. I tend to hit incredibly high shots.

Like many other people who have commented, I don't like to copy anyone's swing - we are all unique in our own way! However, the one aspect that I do like to follow is tempo. And for me, there are not two better players with excellent tempo than Retief Goosen and Ernie Els. Whenever I get into a tight situation where I feel a little nervous then I always think about the layed back approaches taken by these guys. Another good example of tempo and this time for putting may surprise a few people but I think former Open champion Paul Lawrie has an unbelievably smooth stroke!

    • Day 1 (3 Apr 25) - Restarting the routine after a 4 day quick trip.  Got back in the groove today for some swings of the 6i and driver into the net -‘to just warm the muscles a little.  Wrapped up the day with grandson hitting 20-25 yd pitches in the backyard.  Love watching his swing and also his concept of course management, to hear him say he left himself in a good position to finish (good words from a soon to be 9 yr old)….
    • Day 185 - 2025-04-03 Had a good 2.5 hour session at Golf Evolution. Kinda glad it was still wet and windy out today as I wouldn't have gotten such a good session in if I played. Got up to 93 MPH (with a pause) on my 6I and 130 MPH ball speed (on a different slightly slower hit, a bit more de-lofted than I'll want eventually).
    • I'm highly probable for the entire weekend, thanks for doing the hard work to set it up.  I can't wait for more details.
    • I take 2nd, is a confirmation that you can eventually win your major and also is good material for having a laugh about it in the distant future.
    • I'm a relatively new golfer (<5 years) in my mid-thirties. So far I've spent most of my time and money on lessons and actually golfing. I'm currently a 90s-100s player, but hope to break into the 80s with lessons and practice. I'm definitely not of the mindset that flashy expensive clubs will help me play better...I try to make the assumption that my equipment is more capable than I am. That said, I do know that realistically that threshold does exist somewhere. I just have no idea where. At what point should I consider an upgrade from starter clubs to something I can grow into and improve with?  My stuff: Starter set (Callaway Strata) from Amazon. (3w, 5h, 9i-PW) Gently used Cleveland Wedges (LW, SW, GW) - My old ones were from a set from the late 90s, so I did upgrade these. Gently used TaylorMade M1 driver - The starter set driver had a regular flex, and I had several knowledgeable people tell me I should have a stiff flex Thanks in advance!
