Okay, so this seems to be my year to join the 21st century in golf. I have added high moi drivers, more forgiving irons, and for the first time in over 45 years, a 60* wedge. I am turning my attention to my putter. For years I scoffed at the Superstroke grip, sticking to my old skinny leather and rubber grips on my flanged blade putters. I have switched to an Odyssey #9. It has a moderately larger pistol style grip, but I have tried some putters with a Superstroke, and find I really like the mid-slim 2.0, which is available with or without backweighting.

I know the decision is personal, but what are the perceived benefits of backweighting in putters?

And other than just liking the feel, what would be some indicators to go that way?

Read, Bead, and Speed.

The grips themselves have a pretty small influence on Bead.

Counter-weighted grips have a fairly good sized influence on Speed.

That's the only reason to do it. I know it's gonna sound broken-record-like, but get fit for your putter and this includes the head weight, shaft weight, and counter-balance weight. You'll find you naturally control speed better with some combinations over other combinations.

If you go to the Edel putter fitter… they'll have counter-weights and stuff for you to try out.

Thanks, that is the long-term goal. Maybe this season, but more likely next.

In the interim, I may give counter-weighting a try.

How does it affect speed, or is that an individual thing?

I use a counterweighted putter, I love it. For me it makes the putter feel much more solid and stable. I have had other people try it that didn't like it at all, so its entirely personal.

So I had a 2.0 Mid-Slim Countercore (backweighted) grip installed yesterday.

So far, so good. I like the no taper constant size. My hands fit  it well, and I feel more even grip pressure. I honestly cannot feel a ton of difference in the counterweighting, but my stroke seems a bit smoother-of course could be psychological. I have only putted on carpet-looking forward to trying on course.
