Just took my new clubs out for a test drive. Every shot with the irons were 6-10 left. The clubs felt too upright to me so I got out the lie board and sure enough I need to go 2 deg flat! I'm assuming this is causing my misses left. I'm generally a solid ball striker and was wondering what you all thought about the lie angle

I just got new irons (P790's) and the fitter set me up 1 degree flat.  It has decreased my draw by a few yards.  My last two iron sets were 1 degree upright and my common miss would be left.  So my experience confirms that a flatter lie angle will help keep a right to left ball flight manageable.

Thank you. Did it just decrease your draw or did your ball start off more on line? Possibly both?

Lie angle is an important, but often overlooked aspect of your irons.  Why is it so important?  Because it affects the direction your shots fly.

When players don't have the lie angle adjusted to their swing, it can cause shots to fly off-line, like the OP described.  Many people don't realize the lie angle could be the reason their shots are missing to the right or left, so they make adjustments in their alignment or swing to compensate.  This leads to many problems.  It's hard to compensate exactly the same way every time, so it's hard to be consistent.

Everyone should have their lie angles checked on a regular basis (at least once a year).  It's easy and doesn't take very long, and if your clubs need adjustments it isn't expensive.

That was my thinking. I just wanted to make sure I was thinking correctly before I started treating my swing instead of my equipment. Thank you. Will changing the lie angle 2 deg flat affect the feel at set up?

I think it accomplished both, a little less draw and better initial direction.  The club position feels better also since my arms can hang down more naturally.

It doesn't really affect the feel, but it will have a slightly different look.  It won't be very difficult to get used to this...it's a pretty easy transition.

Ideally each iron should be hit off a lie board and adjusted accordingly, but if you're unable to do that you might want to just have 1 or 2 irons adjusted initially...you could do the club that you prefer to practice or warm-up with, or 1 short iron and 1 mid iron or something like that.  This will give you a chance to hit them to determine if they were bent the correct amount, or if they were bent too much or not enough.  They might need to be tweaked one way or the other.  When you have it dialed in, then have the rest of the set adjusted.  This will avoid having to go back and have all your irons bent again if it wasn't quite right the first time.

On a side note, there are some guys get overly concerned about how much the toe is up at address or if the heel is a little off the ground when they set up to the ball and things like that...what's important is what's happening at impact.  I've seen players who will alter the way they set up to the ball in an effort to get the sole flat on the ground at address, but that's not necessary.

You already know this, but lie angle is very dependent on posture. For years I thought I needed 2 degrees upright until I took a lesson that showed me I had poor posture. Once I fixed my posture I could  use neutral lie angles with no problem.

Arturo is dead right. Posture posture posture. I played 2* upright as well until I fixed my posture. Now about 1* with the correct length shafts +1/4-3/8”. I would go see a fitting pro, or even a local shop and have them sole marki tape each of your clubs. Hit several balls and gauge where you are at with each individual iron. Adjust to how each sole marking tape is indicating. At minimum I would hit the 3, 7 and PW to see if there is a trend and adjust all either flat or upright depending. For reference on how weird each person fitting is. I’ve see guys taller than me 6’, need to shorten the shafts because that had gorilla length arms and vise versa like me long torso regular arms need 1/4-3/8” long on everything... it’s a personal sport with personal fitments the way I see it.

    • When you're quite overweight, you burn more calories just existing than someone much thinner just existing, so it's easier to lose more weight more quickly, too. A very large person can lose 10-12 pounds in three weeks without being unhealthy about rapid weight loss. If you weigh 170 and want to weigh 160, though, you should take your time getting down there.
    • I figured it was questionable as well. I too thought it was funny when he said how easy it was to set up compared to ‘more expensive devices.’ Yeah, it’s a real mess turning on my Mevo and setting it down. Maybe it’s ‘useful’ for someone who doesn’t want to spend a dime on a monitor and only wants to know distance, on a clear day.😗
    • Is all about the balance between calories consumed / digested vs calories burned though the day. The best way to lose weight is to keep your mouth shut! eat less. Consume less calories than your body needs and you will loose weight eventually. Slowly but surely. Off course you can ad extra workout to your day to burn more calories but it's a lot easier to avoid eating that 2nd burger than going out to run an hour or more to burn it. I went from 75 kilos down to 63 in 1 year just because I wasn't able to eat without pain. In that year I didn't exercise at all in that period, I was feeling bad every day. It was all about not eating enough.  2 years later I regained all my weight, just because I started eating more because I was feeling better. Also in that period I started to hit the gym and play more golf. Burned a lot more calories but also eat a LOT more food.  Fast and slow metabolism is a thing but is just an excuse to quit. If you have a slow metabolism and you want to lose weight is going to be harder for you to lose weight than a person that have fast metabolism, but is possible if you really commit to it.  Bonus track... the bigger the muscles, the more calories they burn during the day even when they are resting. So lifting weight while dieting is better than dieting with cardio.    What is real in a diet? The ideal number is to eat 500 calories less than you burn per day. In 2 week you will be 7000 calories down. That equals to 1 kilo or 2 pounds. So the idea is to loose 2 kilos / 4 pounds a months... it seams to little but over a year is a whopping 24 kilos / 48 pounds. Remember... if you commit to loose way Slowly but surely you will lose weight. Never believe when someone try's to sell you, that you can loose 20 pounds in one month. Is not possible or healthy.  Another thing when you start to diet is don't get discouraged if after a week you stop going down in weight, even you start to go up. is normal, when you start to diet, you normally loose a couple pounds in water, yes that water is from water retention from your previous diet.  Just keep on grinding and you will keep loosing weight eventually. Also worth pointing out, the body always tends to stay the same. If your weight is 100 and you start a diet, you body is going to notice that the calories intake is been dramatically reduced, so in order to keep you at 100 kilos is going to slow down your metabolism in order for you to burn less calories. Eventually this is not going to be enough and you will start to loose weight but your body is not going to make it easy on you.
    • I feel like that video was an incredible waste of time. Because the guy kept saying carry and clearly the device is saying total distance. With carry distance also on there, but he's not calling that out. They when he's comparing it to the Trackman he continues to say "carry", when again the device says total. With his being so inexact in the use of the terms carry and total distances I literally have no idea how accurate or inaccurate that thing is.  I will say the putting was kind of neat.
    • I watched that video a few days ago. I chuckled at him saying it is so much easier to set up than plopping a GC3 down and turning it on. I love how he did his test hitting AlmostGolf balls, too. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Do I think this is remotely accurate? No. It's measuring ball speed. It's not getting spin or anything like that. Certainly not in dim conditions outside at night.
