Good afternoon all!

I am new to the community and have only been golfing for a couple of months. Right now my current clubs are a set Golden Bear Wide Body clubs that I got from a family friend. I noticed on an online yard sale someone selling an TaylorMade R7 iron set for $60. They aren’t in the best condition, but I was wondering if they would be considered an upgrade from what I have. The Golden bears are in pretty good shape, but I know they aren’t considered “quality” clubs, from what I’ve researched. I actually can’t find any information at all about this particular set from looking around.

Is this a good price for the R7’s and would this be a worthy upgrade?

Man, right off the bat I want to say yes the R7 would be an upgrade. But, those look pretty forgiving and the R7 is now an 11 year old iron. Looking up the R7 trade value I would say $60 is a very fair deal depending on the condition.

@JacobL I'd like to suggest you check the TM R7's on the PGA Value Guide for general info and the Maltby Playability Factor to get a feel for how forgiving they were/are. There were different models of R7's. My recollection is that they were "Game Improvement" class. Best of luck, -Marv

Oh yeah...and upgrade those woods as well.  That's a monster dent on the bottom of that driver.  Newer will be more forgiving.

@MarvChamp thank you for your input. Looking at those links I do believe the clubs are a great value. Later on, I plan to go to a PGA superstore and upgrade to a “better” used set, and the trade in value on the R7 line looks to be right around the $70 mark, so I wouldn’t lose anythin getting them. They also have very good ratings.

@Typhoon92 I probably will try to get them! As far as the woods and driver, I know they aren’t great, but they’re not on my priority right now. I mostly just play the short course where I live and I really don’t use them too much, but when I do get the improving and going to longer courses, I’ll definirely upgrade. Here’s a list of the R7’s, are they in decent shape?

You're welcome! Keep us posted how the new-old clubs turn out. Best, -Marv

Not sure if the pics represent the set you're buying--or maybe I've missed something in the thread--but looks like an incomplete set, with a second 6-iron of a different model (Burner).

A friend of mine played R7 irons a few years back, before I bought my Mizunos, and I played a few holes with them to test them out.  I remember thinking they played pretty well, and it seems like my flight with them was a little lower than what I was used to.  But they were quality irons, for sure.  I ended up going through a fitting which steered me to my JPX 825s, over TMs, and several other sets I tried.  I think they'd be a significant upgrade to your Golden Bears, IMO...assuming you're getting a complete set with nothing missing, no play-affecting damage, etc.  You'll probably want/need new grips on them, and that would likely run well over what you pay for the clubs.

looking Good!

Unfortunately I believe the R7’s got sold before I could get them! There is a set of Titleist DCI Oversized + that is 1-SW on sale for $40, I just know they’re much older. Do you have any knowledge of them?

You don’t happen to live in Iowa do you? I ask because I bought a set of R7’s today

Nope! I live in Alabama, so a little distance away.

Don't know anything about them other than they are much older than the R7 irons.  See if u can hold off for a while and find something newer that'll be more forgiving like the R7

Thanks for that input! I actually went ahead and ordered a used set of Callaway Diablo edge irons off of Global Golf, hopefully they are in decent condition! I figure it was hard to go wrong with Callaway and they had decent reviews. I’m definitely excited to try them out!

I got the Diablo Edges in today and love them! When I hit them right, they go high, far, and straight! I just need to get used to them. Most came in really good shape, but on the 8 iron, the ferrule is missing. Would this cause any problems?

    • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
