I have a friend I would like to make a club for.  I have a r11s 10.5 head laying around I want to utilize.

She is about 5' - 5'2" and until recently was using a Men's stiff RBZ driver.  She probably chokes down about 3.5".  It  looks pretty funny.

She had another driver laying around that she had me cut down.  This was at least a Regular flex driver.  I took about 3.25" off it for her.

As I stated before, I would like to setup the r11s.  She hits a driver really well and I think her ideal flex would be in the range of a Regular flex to a stiffer senior flex shaft.

What do you folks recommend?  Assuming the other driver was 46" and is now 42.75".  What would be the best way to achieve the flex I am looking for?  Cutting that much off the top must have some affect on the stiffness of the shaft.  Is there a combination of trimming the bottom and top I should do with a certain stiffness shaft?  Really not sure what to do here.  I have thrown many parts together in the past, but really at a loss what to do here.

Thanks for your input.

Well, if she grips down 3.5", maybe 3" or 3.5" under her previous one is a good starting point.  There's a little worry she might be like AK and even with a shorter club, she'd still be inclined to grip down.  However, this affects swing weight.

Short doesn't matter too much:  most shafts can be cut.  The end you cut from affects the flex, if I remember correctly (it has been years since I assembled a club).  IIRC, cutting from one end won't make a significant effect on flex, but when I did these things it was like cutting half an inch off.

Do you know her clubhead speed with a driver?  Alternately, do you know her typical driver distance (especially if you know the carry distance)?  If you don't, is there a way you could find this out, such as by her going to a golf shop and trying a demo club in a launch bay?

Lastly, let me page @WUTiger, our resident expert on these sort of matters.

Your friend should use a Mini-driver.  Those things come shorter (42.5 inch?) in stock form properly weighted.

Cutting a driver 3 plus inches loses more than 18 swingweights (!!!).

Also the mini-driver would likely have a 12* or higher loft. She's not very tall, and could use the loft to make up for leverage deficit of her height.

My wife is even shorter, so I hope your gal gets the club she needs!

    • It’s possible the graphite shaft has a small internal crack or a delamination. Tapping it and hearing a vibrating sound is usually a sign the shaft isn’t behaving as it should. Since the store wasn’t helpful, consider taking it to a club fitter or a pro shop that can check the shaft flex and integrity. If it’s defective, you might be able to get a replacement from the manufacturer.
    • It’s interesting how much a 3D system changes your understanding. Observing top players in full detail and realizing the trail knee shouldn’t fully extend is a great example of why being open to new info is so important. I like your approach: not trying to be “right,” but trying to teach correctly based on actual evidence. Makes sense why golfers would benefit from this perspective.
    • I would say both are equally not the best for golf. Is it better than nothing, sure.  Golf is an athletic motion. Professional golfers are doing a comprehensive workout routine focusing on strength, power, flexibility, stability. They might include some yoga into the routine. I would put both of them in the recovery bin, not golf enhancement bin.  If you want to increase swing speed, core strength, longevity in golf and life, then lift heavy weights.
