Hi Everyone,

After three years of golfing, I feel like my level of play is not improving, I am stuck. I was playing at a handicap of 22 for a while, but last few months I played worse. I am struggeling with a fade/slice, especially with the driver. Furthermore I feel I lack distance for someone my age (24), my 5 iron goes around 160 yards for example, I would love to see some higher numbers. I tend to look up to many instructional videos on Youtube, which leads to confusion what I should improve. There is so much information out there..

That is why I posted a thread hear, to hear opinions from experienced teacher/good golfers on my swing.

My bad shots are mainly a pull or a push fade. I cannot hit a draw, when i set up for a hook, I can maybe draw it a few yards, but thats it.

Can you guys please help me out with some tips? Thanks!

I've been Playing Golf for: 3 years
My current handicap index or average score is: 22, but playing closer to 28 lately
My typical ball flight is: Fade or pull
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Slice to the right or Straight pull

Welcome to TST. I am no swing expert, but there are quite a few things here that I see. You have quite a bit of head movement throughout the swing, It looks like you over-shallow in the backswing and compensate by coming way OTT (which results in the straight pull or the nasty slice). Also, you don't get the majority of your weight forward at and throughout impact.

Few things I recommend:

There is a lot of other good information on the site. Take a look around, and take some advice from guys who know quite a lot about golf instruction.

There is a ton to work on here so that’s good. I agree with @HJJ003 about the head movement and you have a lot of sway away from the target as well. The first thing I would look into is the thread about creating a centered hip turn and get yourself creating a centered turn with a steady head. Then look into fixing the rest of the backswing so that your right arm doesn’t get stuck behind you so badly because that’s definitely a huge problem.

Not sure why I said centered hip turn. I meant making a “centered pivot”.

Here’s also a video about getting that trail elbow “unstuck”.

Thanks for your feedback. I agree, when you see most golfers on the television, club and hands are above their head at top of backswing, I feel for me it is far too low.  Do you think I should move my hands more upward?

Thanks! Do you know some drill to work at a centered Pivot, should I focus on straightening the right leg?

The wrong swing by Erik in that video looks like me, definitely something I should change!

I really appreciate your feedback guys. In fact it motivates me to head to the course to make some better swings!

I am just a beginner so take my comments with a grain of salt. I was struggling with my driver, I found I was trying to take to big of a back swing (like you see pros do) I tried to shorten my back swing a bit and it has helped. My reason for this, I was having a hard time getting my body to come back to the right position after really winding up my back swing. With a shorter back swing it is easier to get back into the right position. I don't crush my drives I hit around 230 average sometimes get it out to 250.

    • That’s totally fair. I have my chipping issues which make my putter more playable in that situation. Really just confirming that while not optimal there comes a point where if you need to use a putter (for whatever reason) then the optimal mechanics breaks down. I know I’m a sample of one. 😂
    • Day 329 - 2025-08-26 Hit 24 balls before lessons and JEP Summer Session. With the MP-33. 🙂 Put an undersized grip on my VR Pro accidentally.
    • Well, that's not really a putt at that point. You could easily choose to putt that up the slope with a hybrid or something.
    • Day 15 (August 26).  I missed practice yesterday, but otherwise had a 14-day streak going into it.  Somehow, some of my posts for this appear in my profile but I can't seem to see them (I hope I didn't break any rules that would cause them to be removed).  I am hoping I'll be able to keep doing some practice while I'm out to regain the red text.  Context:  am on vacation, this week with friends.  What was today's actual practice? Today, a friend and I decided to go to TopGolf;  it was kind of like being at the range with someone else's clubs.  And that's ultimately how I was able to use it for practice:  I don't practice choosing a target, lining up to it, and then hitting often enough;  that's what this place seems to be about.  In any case, we were there for 90 minutes, I was hitting for maybe 35-40 minutes of that time, and I did pick a target each time.
    • Day 2 - (26 Aug 25) - Church men’s golf nine hole Captains choice.  Had grandson as part of our group - was a blast watching him drill the putts.  Love these no pressure sessions - great for going outside the norm on club selection.
