today i took a look at my swing on a video camera. i thought my swing was alright, i was hitting it ok, not great but not bad either and i got a few lessons to see if there was a problem. man, was i in for a shock. it was the worst swing i had ever seen. i dont have the video, but i will descibe it as best i can. the backswing was good, taking the club back on plane, but as i started the downswing, i had a sort of loop in my swing, kind of like jim furyk, but way more inside, and i did not come back on plane, instead, carrying on even more inside and at the point where i hit the ball, the club was nearly parallel to the ground, and i lost about a foot in height. it looked crazy, and he told me to swing outside to in as i come down to try and get it a bit more on plane, but it wasnt working. there is nothing worse than knowing what is wrong, but not being able to fix it (ive had several lessons). anyone have any advice on how to fix a swing that is too far inside (only on downswing)
thank you for any help in advance

Well, I wouldn't recommend doing this as a full time swing cure, but more of a fix in my opinion just so you get the hang of proper swing plane.

Bring the club back WAY to the inside on the takeaway. This way, it will be hard to mock this plane on the downswing. Almost to the point of feeling uncomfortable on the takeaway, but more comfortable on the downswing.

I wouldn't even watch where the ball is going with this swing as the results probably wont be that great. Its more of a "get the proper feel" type thing. After the downswing gets to be more comfortable and not so much inside, adjust the backswing to a more normal plane and see if you can repeat the downswing you felt comfortable with.

This is how I taught myself how to play golf. It may not work for everybody and Im sure there are other tips you will receive, this is just what works for me. I've never had a lesson. Just video analysis. It can do WONDERS!!!

i might try an incredibly steep backswing and followthrough for a while, just to get rid of this loop thing in the downswing then try and flatten in out a little. anyway, i would rather have a steep swing that is on plane than the one i currently have

I think I would work on half swinging for a while at the range, dont know if you saw Padraig on sky yesterday (Sat 2nd) but he puts a glove under each armpit to try and keep everything in check. Our range has mirrors at the back of the bays so what I do is get into the correct position at the top of my backswing, hold it there, check it in the mirror to make sure Im on the correct plane etc and havent over swung and then hit the ball, concentrating on shifting my hips out of the way, keeping my right elbow tucked in and keeping a good tempo, Im not really concerned with distance but I pick out a target and use that as a pin.

Out of interest where do you play? I've played Cleveland and Seaton Carew, 2 lovely links courses. Hope this helps.

Try taking a ruler, or a metrestick, and adjust it behind you to where you want the club to take off, then follow your backswing along there and just keep practising.

I'm not usually one for golf gadgets and gizmos, but a specific product comes to mind and I think incidentally, Butch Harmon's the endorser of this product. Basically, the gadget is a laser stuck to the butt end of the club. As you swing, the laser dot should follow a straight line from the ball all the way back to the top of your backswing. Your downswing should follow pretty much the same path (straight line) back to the ball and through impact.

Lay down a club in front and behind the ball, grab yourself a laser pointer and lemme know if your swing looks any better. :)

    • Context:  I am on vacation, so I don't have access to my indoor practice room, and I won't for about a month. Day 12 (August 22).  Today's weather was not one where even I was going to be outside.  For whatever reason, I didn't do the putting drill today.  There was a drill I remembered from this site (the article was something akin to "five things you can do to improve that don't require talent") that involved having an iron along the back from stance, moving to backswing and holding, then moving to forward swing and holding.  So I did that for five minutes today. I also spent 90 minutes at the gym;  my main motivation for getting stronger is golf related (and I really should get back to Fit For Golf  specific workouts;  I'm not sure when I lost that habit, a poor choice on my part that I did).  Funny story, I spent 20 minutes on the Stairmaster today at the gym (the rest was weights and rests), a device I started with shortly after I took up golf because I read something about it in a Butch Harmon book.  I should be following FFG Mike's fitness advice though, not some memory of someone else.
    • Day 8 8-22 Worked on backswing length and getting some speed in backswing. Recorded swings. Was happy with practice session tonight.
    • Day 325 - 2025-08-22 Practiced for almost an hour after cleaning my cabinets to account for the new GEARS cameras and helping @OBlum for a bit. Exaggerating the same old things.
    • Yea, faster greens = shorter putting stroke. You can be more accurate.  Really, I think people who struggle with distance control struggle just as much on slow greens as fast greens. I've seen people blast putts 10-FT past the hole on 8 or 9 STIMP as much as 11-12 STIMP.  I prefer faster greens. Usually means the putting surface is better and again, shorter putting stroke.
