I just bought a launch monitor (Foresight GC2) so I can keep practicing through the winter.  Just curious what everyone's thoughts are on the best ways to use this device to improve.

One big thing I will be using it for was inspired by DJ talking about using his Trackman, get precise wedge distances ingrained.  Right now from about 70 yards and in, I go entirely by feel.  I'd like to use the GC2 to basically be able to hit a shot in 10 yard increments very precisely.  So my body knows exactly what to do when the flag is 40, 50, 60, 70 yards out.

I'll also be using it to get a better feel for carry with my irons and wedges, I already have that though from hitting on a Trackman.  But it will be nice to have more than just one hitting session's data.

I use my Mevo every time I go to the range.

It’s just a gauge for me to determine how optimally I’m swinging. Carry distances aren’t as important to me for the course because they change depending upon conditions.

Consistency is more important to me.

If I remember right, I think that is the model that has the "FSX Skills Challenge" as an option. Rick Shiels and Peter Finch do the challenge on YouTube a lot and it looks like a great way to practice. Requires you to hit a variety of different clubs and both distance and accuracy are necessary to score well.

Also will be able to check to make sure your driver launch parameters are optimal, and will be a good way to monitor/quantify improvements in your swing. example if you have been going to the gym or doing something like SuperSpeed golf to increase your clubhead speed, you'd be able to tell if your numbers changed in any way.

Did you get the HMT as well? Might be a worthwhile addition to show you additional data points like strike location, club path, etc. just make sure you remove the white dots before any competition rounds!

Yes, I am a data nerd, so I am super looking forward to having quantifiable number to show improvement.  I'm going to be stretching and working out 5 days a week, and working on my swing with the GC2 until mid January, when I'll be able to get back outside again.

I would love to have HMT, but the GC2 was extremely expensive as it was, so I did not purchase it.  I would also assume the FSX skills challenge you mentioned comes with the FSX software, which was crazy expensive so I didn't get that either.  I'm planning on getting Jack Nicklaus Perfect Golf as well as a membership at onlinegolftour.net for the practice challenges and data tracking they make available.  This will cost me about 1/10th what the FSX software was going to cost.  If I end up not feeling like it is good enough to do meaningful practice with, I'll probably just buy FSX.

Ah gotcha. I didnt realize the FSX software was a separate purchase from the GC2. Still will be a very valuable tool for your golf. Congrats on the purchase, be sure to post a pic of the setup if you have it indoors like in your garage or something, I know people on here (myself included) like seeing other peoples' indoor golf setups.

I think you're on the right track. Probably the most important thing is to get your driver launch angle and spin rate optimized, if it's not already. Then, I would work on dialing in distances like you're talking about. See the distance when you hit a knockdown shot, grip down on a club, etc.

    • Day 313 - I played 18 today. First and last holes were ugly, but I actually played pretty well. Driver was great, irons were alright, and the short game was better than average.
    • Day 205 (23 Nov 24) - Worked with the alignment rod and 7i  in reference to ball position in relation to lead foot on full iron shots, noticed an increase in thinned shots last couple of rounds - better contact with the balls (hard foam) during the drill/swing rehearsals.
    • Have you gone to a fitting? A good fitting will not only give you a clubhead but a shaft, etc. that will suit you.
    • It's not like the Nike Vapor Pro are exactly a highly sought set of irons.
    • Last night I was putting my Nike Vapor Pro Irons back in my bag.  I had my sons i500’s in there the last couple months after we all went to Top Golf .  I picked up the Nike’s this past spring and they are like new.  I feel guilty using them… I have other irons that aren’t valuable that I could use instead.
