I'm looking for reviews on this from the "average golfer" I desperately want this club (tested the P790's when I was searching for new irons) and loved them but the lofts were too strong for me and so I went with the AP2's I have yet to find any place that has this UDI for me to test out and I don't want to just buy it without hitting it.  Does anyone have this in their bag that can give me a little insight as to how nice it is (or isn't) and how much you like it.  Also maybe where you got it from so I can see if I cant actually hit it before I buy it.

Thanks

Thomas

I have the P790 3 iron, bent 1 degree strong, with a KBS Tour C Taper Lite shaft in it and I love it.

I ordered it 1 degree strong because the UDI 2 iron loft is 17 degrees, and the 3 iron bent 1 degree strong is 18 degrees.

I got this because there was a 4 or 5 month backorder for the P790 UDI 2 iron back when I decided I wanted to get rid of my hybrid, and it was cheaper for the 3 iron compared to the UDI.

I can hit it off the tee and off the fairway as my second shot into par 5s, although I typically don't use it out of the rough.

The ball just jumps off the face, I was actually surprised how high it goes, especially since I typically hit the ball lower overall.

It's my 220-230 club from the fairway, and off the tee I've gotten it out into the 240's a couple times.

I will say there I can definitely tell when I hit it poorly, I've had some mishits that only go 100-150 yards, but that is user error, not club error.

I know its not quite the same as the UDI 2 iron, but it works for me

Did you test it out before you bought it? I think that's my biggest thing right now is that I want to be able to hit it before I get it and I can't for the life of me find any place that has it where I could demo it.  I also would love to not have to wait until next year to get it when it would be warmer and Taylormade would be going around doing their demo days

I did not. I had hit the regular P790 7 iron previously and liked how it felt, so I figured I'd like the 3 iron too.

I was able to hit the 7 iron at my local Golf Galaxy, and when I was in there recently they did have the UDI as well IIRC

So if I were to go hit the 790 7 iron it would give me a good idea of if I would like the UDI?

In my opinion, yes. They feeling off the face is identical. When you flush one, you'll know it. Subtle "click" sound and it barely feels like you made contact with the ball.

The only thing I would say is if you are planning on getting the UDI in a graphite shaft, try to hit the 7 iron in a graphite shaft too, same if you are going steel shaft in the UDI.

I hit the UDI a bunch at demo days.  I really wanted to like it.  With the HZRDUS black shaft...stock offering, you really have to hit it hard or it just goes too low and accomplishes nothing.  I was putting a smooth swing on it and I was surprised how  it would not get up in the air.  If I swung hard, it would, but any let up...forget it.

My idea after that was if I wanted a " udi" type of club is to do what Klineka did and get a 2 or 3 iron.  Easier to get in the air and distance would be fine.

    • Good to know, is reasonable. is like been in the hazard form the start. play it from there or get out of the PA with a penalty stroke.    He was completely doomed already.
    • Wordle 1,426 X/6   Got greedy and tried to get it in 3 only to miss it in 6.
    • 44 (9 over) Had a few pars, a few not pars. Played out of 2 traps. game would be much easier if my driver would go straight down the middle. But no, it wants to go right or left and never let me play out of the fairway.
    • Interesting 9 holes last night... Hole 1 - Sliced into the tree line and hit a tree on the approach where I ended up losing yardage. Hole 2 - took me 2 chips and 2 putts to get in the hole Hole 4 - rinsed my approach into the pond. With all that being said, I was +4 on those first 4 holes, but got locked in and played the final 5 holes at -1.   Ended up with a 39 (+3). Foolish game.
    • Man, I totally missed this. Sorry to hear that. I am glad you are healing up.
