Hey guys and girls.

Have been playing for three months, currently on a 28 handicap, 6ft, 210lbs shooting anything between 93-105. Trying to play twice a week but at least once.

I had a club fitting and iron swing speed of 77 mph I can’t remember the numbers on small box. The club pro recommended stiff clubs at least 100g in weight so went with a set of Rbladez with dg S300 shafts in them.

Hitting my PW 145 yards

Question 1: Are these clubs and shafts helping or detrimental to a new players’ game?

Question 2: Would I benefit more from a set of taylormade burners, Cleveland ta7 or ping G5’s (GI clubs) etc with stock stiff shafts?

Thanks

Welcome to The Sand Trap. New players should really try and focus on making good contact with irons. DG S300 shaft are a bit heavier than the 100g shafts the fitting recommended, but you should be able to use them. 77 mph is average for a 6 iron (if you used a 6 iron to get that speed) and as a new player, you swing speed will probably increase given your size. Your PW distance would indicate stiff is also a good choice.

If you want to get better, I recommend posting a video of your swing in the Member Swings section. We can help point you in the right direction for improvement.

Be completely honest with yourself regarding this question. Are you asking this because:

1. You’re not hitting the ball as good as you’d like and wonder if changing clubs would help?

2. You just don’t like the feel/look of the RBladez as much as you thought.

For the first, that’s golf. You can’t buy a better game. It really takes time and patience. For the second, don’t underestimate how a club looks/feels. If another club gives you warm fuzzies when you’re looking down at the ball then so be it. Take those clubs.

Welcome to TST. And certainly take the advice @boogielicious mentioned about the My Swing thread. There are many awesome instructors on this site. Cheers!

Thanks very much for your feedback, I’ll make the effort to get my swing recorded and go from there 👍

Thanks @Vinsk,

I was more so asking whether the heavier shafts and type of clubs were costing me strokes/consistency etc, what would I gain from stuck stiff shafts or would it be like starting again?

not overly fussed on looks but would love the ball straight and high, was getting a slice from my 4/5 irons but probably more down to ability.

thanks again for taking the time to reply

would love the ball straight and high,

Well I do believe the DG S300 promotes a low trajectory. There are so many shafts out there it can be overwhelming. It would really be good for you to compare your ball flight with the DG S300 and a shaft more geared for a high trajectory. It’s very noticeable when you hit different shafts. I believe you would certainly see a difference and be able to find a shaft that will yield a higher trajectory. Testing is always best because flex varies from brand to brand.

  • 1 month later...

Sorry for the delayed update guys, so I picked up a set of Cleveland TA7's that I thought were stiff from Ebay that turned out to be regular 85's and played a quick 9 with them..

For the first time ever I hit a 44, my irons were going straight and high, landing and finishing where I intended. The other positive was not having a sore back and arms afterwards (more than likely technique)

I didn't seem to lose too much distance compared with the RBladez, 190 yards with a 4 iron but more importantly straight. Will keep them in the bag for a while.

I’d say that’s good news! Enjoy and look around. Plenty of golf stuff to read and post to.  We really encourage viewpoints from everyone. You never know when your issue is the same as someone  else’s. Cheers!

Shockingly, the short game has been at worst, not harmful to my game. I am using similar feels to the full swing, in that I try to get my hands down. I've been nipping the ball clean off the turf.
    • I was laid off two months ago. Good severance, a 90 day layoff announcement regulation the company wanted to avoid so technically I'm still on the payroll for a few weeks, and a bunch of banked PTO, so I'm in a great spot and working on a startup idea I've been batting around with my brother for a while. That means I've got time to get to the gym! I'm at like 60-75 minutes 5x a week of strength training, and either a run or a bunch of time playing soccer or tennis with my daughter on the weekends. Stronger than I've been in forever. Up ~5 pounds of (noticeable!) muscle!
