Watch the replay of this shot. Sometimes they almost get it right... (starts at 1:08)

Quote: Because its fun and I find satisfaction in getting better. Doesn't make it less frivolous. Its still just a hobby that I spend my money on that really should not be taken too seriously if I dont make a living off of it. I do practice. I didn't say I don't care about golf, I said it was frivolous, unimportant, unnecessary for my well being. Yes, unless you make money off of it somehow and support yourself/family. Or maybe you don't know what I meant by frivolous.

Why does he have to get better if hes having fun? Maybe he doesnt find the same satisfaction in spending his valuable time practicing such a frivolous activity, like most of us here.

I have never broken 100 let alone a 96. I would be happy with that. You know you can do better, isnt that what keeps us on the course? Keep it in perspective, we have all felt like you did.

That was quick, thanks. I feel so guilty... Im such a cheater, not.

Is it permissable to use an object (i.e broken tee, twig, leaf, rock etc) by placing it in your target line before a shot to help with aim? And I mean purposely placing it there, not just using something that is already there... Thanks

Interesting. What size clothes/shoes do you wear? How much for the Sasquatch bag? Go Vick!!

I bought a used skycaddie from rockbottomgolf for 80 bucks. Problem solved.

Very impressive! At first I was thinking, "Why does he call himself a one man band if he just sings and plays guitar?" Needless to say I was surprised, you have some real talent. Keep it up. Do you record guitar first and play drums over it? If you made a "scratch" track of the lead guitar and recorded your drums to that, then laid down the lead and rest of the instruments/vocals to that drum track I think it would sound a little tighter and flow a little better. Just some constructive criticism to think about.

Sand wedge is also easier to hit compared to say, a 7 or a 4. The grip might help but dont focus too much on the equipment. Yes, having a consistent grip across the set can help, but dont expect it to be a fix-all. A good number to shoot for is better, or even the same as what you did previously. What you should do is work on some good practice at the range, that where you will get better faster, not on the course

Overhearing a lesson never ceases to amaze me

Agreed. As the saying goes those who cant do, teach. :) Even Ben Hogan talks about it in his book. He said you can either be a great player or a great teacher, theres not enough time for both. I believe my first golf instructor knows a lot about the golf swing and how to get people to be able to perform it. I also believe he couldnt hit a drive over 200 yards or get a shoulder turn of more than 90 degrees. He is almost 80 years old though, and still shoots below his age. He will be the first to admit he is not even a scratch golfer anymore and never played on the PGA tour, but his price reflects that. He really enjoys teaching and wants people to be better, and hes being doing it for over 30 years. He is not in it for the money. He doesnt try to make you swing exactly like a pro, he tries to get you to understand why what they do works, and how you can best duplicate the results. Can he hit 5 "perfect" drives in a row on the spot? No. Can he make me a better golfer for a reasonable price? Yes. -
I have an Adams Tom Watson wedge (not the tour version) and I like it. Although it's about a 1/4" shorter than my other "standard" wedges, just food for thought.

I lick my balls.

In response to John Daly being a jerk. I was following him on a few holes at Torrey Pines one year during the Buick. He was walking off the green after a hole to the next tee box and my buddy greeted him. He responded with something along the lines of "Hey guys, its a beautiful day isn't it? ...enjoy the rest of the tournament." This was during the Saturday of the Invitational, not a practice round. Looking back I realize it was almost out of line for us to say anything to him but he seemed completely unfazed and welcomed us as fans. Can't say he was a jerk at all.

Iacas, while I do find a lot of value in most things that you post, I hope you are exaggerating this point. I guess I can over look the 0 greens in reg thing, as you didn't seem to put a lot of emphasis on that. But 44 putts per round? EASY to do. I'm not a good golfer, but I can approach 100 on a good day. You're forgetting about the 4 putt, and one putting is difficult if you think about it. You've either sunk a longer putt or put it close with a chip or approach, which can easily be just as difficult. Sure, just by dumb luck you can one putt or hit a green in reg once per round with a little practice, but what if luck is not on your side? I think you have forgotten what it is like to not be good, or maybe have natural talent for the game and have never experienced it. Either way, if you are instructing people in the real world or just here on the forums, put yourself in the beginner/less talented players shoes. To say that someone who three putts 8 times a round is "perhaps not really cut out for golf" is a bit extreme don't you think? Maybe I took it too personally...

My buddy and I got paired up with a random twosome. We were searching for our balls near a fence on the right side of a par 4 which is parallel with a road. One of the guys in the other twosome shanked his iron shot and it flew right past us onto the road. As were laughing our butts off watching it bounce down the road perfectly, we saw an oncoming Mercedes coupe. It ricocheted violently right off the windshield of the oncoming Benz. The driver slammed on the brakes and immediately jumped out, obviously startled and confused. We yelled and asked if he was okay and he just jumped back in his car and sped off, leaving us keeled over in laughter for the next minute or so.

I used to always play it as it lies until recently. I was playing an executive and my tee shot went awry. My ball lied in some sticks and hay but I wasn't too far from the green. I pulled out my brand new set matching lob wedge that I had just received in the mail the day before. Took a full swing at it and heard a metallic "clink". I immediately look down and saw that underneath the hay was a baseball sized rock. Checking my club I saw that it had a large gouge in the sole. The impact was so bad it cause a bulge in the face of the club, so it was trash. My very first swing on the course with the club, needless to say it wasn't a great golf day for me. Now I will always move my ball if in doubt. I don't normally carry 14 clubs so I was thinking about carrying a "throw away" club just for these instances.

I was under the impression that a stiffer shaft will cause the ball to go left and short with an inappropriate swing speed.

I recently played with a guy who's swing wasn't quite as good as mine that day, from what I noticed. We would hit a similar drive, mine maybe a little better. My approach shot(s) would almost always be much better. Most of the time I three putted, or chipped on and two putted. He often would sink his longer putts after chipping on. When we went to write down our scores he had often one or even two strokes less than mine. My hole would look better on video, his looked better on the scorecard. I believe that especially for higher handicappers, short game is where its at once you can get the ball off the ground and towards the green on almost all your shots. You can miss a green left, right, long or short... but you cant miss the hole left, right, long or short and card any score. My buddy likes to tell a story about when a kid on the high school golf team approached a teaching pro pulling a driver out of his bag and saying, "Come on let's go, I'll smoke you!" The pro quickly went to his bag and pulled out his putter and replied, "Oh yeah?! Let's go!" As the old saying goes, "drive for show, putt for dough."

I really enjoyed it. Lee Trevino was very interesting. The fact that he didnt start golf seriously until his 20's, and won his first major at the age of 27... amazing and inspiring.

I bet so as well. My point was that my drives are not long, I hit the drive of my life and didnt match what a lot of people here are averaging. Maybe if I were in their shoes I would "average 300+" as well, seeing as I have done it once.

Here is from 5 pages of a single thread, I got tired of copy/pasting. How do I recover from a horrible round? Practice, practice, practice. And then play another horrible round.

I see a lot of comments about how internet forum writers (for lack of a better term) inflate their shot distances, especially driver. Today I was at the driving range for awhile and started hitting my driver. I hit several great (to me) shots. Nice and straight, I thought to myself "wow that's far" as well. Just for the heck of it I decided to try and swing out of my shoes and just launch it. After a try or two (or twenty) it worked, I'm not slouch when it comes to size or strength (5'11" 185). I watched the ball sail and thought to myself again "that has to be the longest ball I've ever hit." It flew pretty much out of the range. I looked for the furthest distance sign out there, 225. Now mind you my ball did fly probably 20-40 yards past it. Had it had maybe 20-30 yards of roll that is a max of 295 yards total. No slouch of a drive for an amateur. And I REALLY crushed that thing. It seems that everyone on here averages over 300 yards. Now I am really a skeptic, even more than before. Maybe people don't know the difference between feet and yards? Pros are light years ahead of everyone in iron play, short game and putting, it only makes sense that they are in driving as well. That's why they are on tour playing and we are here on the internet talking about it.
