  1. I do think someone has to step up and be the man that gives Tiger a run week-in and week-out. But I highly doubt that man is Woody Austin. Tiger needs a solid adversary, much like Jack had Arnie, or Tom Watson, etc. If he did, it would make for even more interesting golf tournaments. Sure, some have stepped up to the plate over the years, but they don't seem to last long. Take Phil for instance. I thought for a while there he was going to be the man, but he went the way of the Duval as of late. Speaking of Duval, I thought he'd be the guy a few years back. They all seem to have brief outings where they can match up to Tiger, but unlike Tiger, they fade out. I guarantee the media will forget who Woody Austin is in about 3 weeks anyways.
  2. One simple thing to try is move the ball further forward in your stance. It'll give you a little more time in your swing to get that clubface closed. Also, having it farther forward promotes more of a draw, which should help fight that push/fade you're experiencing.
  3. I agree. Tiger has way too much to lose to even think about trying out steroids. And yes, Tiger is looking rather buff these days, but I think we all know it's natural. If you've watched Tiger's career, you'd know that he gained his muscle girth over quite a few years. If he was 'roiding it up, he'd have taken far less time to get that way. That, and Tiger is a serious hard worker. When he was here in my town for the PGA Championship back in 2003, he stayed in one of the really nice houses that are about a couple minutes away from where I live. After he left, and the media got wind of where he stayed, they talked to a bunch of neighbors in the area and they said he was out every morning jogging around the neighborhood with Elin. I think it's obvious that he's a tireless hard worker. I haven't caught up on the coverage, did Austin say something stupid?
  4. It's been my experience that new people have a harder time with their iron shots than they do with the driver. Take my wife for example. She can actually hit her driver pretty well (she hits about 175 off the tee, and keeps it pretty straight most of the time). However, she has limited success hitting off the ground with an iron. And she hasn't developed much touch with her pitch or chip shots around the green yet. I also get a laugh on how people will say the old phrase "hey, does your husband play?" when I've hit a putt that comes up way short. My response to that is "you obviously haven't seen my wife putt". She'll have a three-footer left, and she hits it as hard as if it were a ten-footer. But I digress. I think for amateurs hitting a teed-up ball is easier. With iron shots, you have to worry about hitting it "fat" or "thin" a little more than a teed-up shot. But like everyone else said, practice is key. Once you get the feeling of a well-struck iron shot, you'll be hooked forever. Golf is the best game on the planet.
  5. In 1962 it was the cool thing to do.
  6. If possible, you should have stopped your swing, backed off from your setup and waited. Usually if you stand there with a look of impatience, staring him down while he's talking, he will eventually get the message without you having to say a word. I've had to do that a couple times. Or, if you couldn't stop your swing and ended up hitting like crap, just hit another ball once the guy shuts up. As long as the guys in your group are ok with it, of course.

    Handicaps

I use a program called IntelliGolf to track mine http://www.intelligolf.com/ . It's a program for your Palm Pilot, but it has a desktop app goes on your computer. I haven't used the Palm Pilot conduit ever since it shit the bed years ago. I only use the desktop app ever since, and I just enter my scores after each round. You can track all sorts of statistics with it, but I generally just track handicap, GIR's, number of fairways hit (or left or right) and number of putts.
  8. What I wanna know is why was he spraying WD-40 on his golf clubs?
  9. I saw a term mentioned in another thread that was called "vanity handicap". In other words, it's where someone purposely fudges their scores a little in order to drive their handicap down with the purpose of looking better in various golf circles or what not. I wonder if the term "vanity tees" should apply here. In other words, a player who plays the blues when they really belong on the whites. They're too "vain" or "macho" to play the whites. The one place I am forced to play blues is during my weekly league night. That's just the rules of the league. Though I'll admit, I've gone a couple times and played our league course on the weekends, and I play from the whites when I do. It sure feels a lot easier to play the whites, when most of the time I see the course from the blues.
  10. And here I thought I was the only one who had these powers. Given to me by the almighty golf gods themselves.

    Natalie Gulbis

Paula is pretty damn cute. I had my picture taken with her last year, so I got to meet her up close and personal. IMHO, I like her look better than Natalie's. Paula over Natalie in a head-to-head contest. And I agree with the Laura Diaz fans, there's just something about her. She's very attractive. Now if she could just win more, we'd get to see more of her on TV.
  12. I had actually heard a lot of people complimenting Sabbatini on his incident with that one guy and his extremely slow play. I can't remember the guy's name, but the incident where Sabbatini got fed up with how slow he was playing, so he hit up to the green, putted out, and moved ahead to the next tee without his playing partner. It seemed like a lot of people I talked to praised him for that saying "it's about time someone did", etc. I think where he went south with his reputation is when he called out Tiger. It's one thing to talk smack, but if you're gonna do it you better be ready to back it up. Sabbatini got stuck in a head-to-head match and didn't back it up. Tiger destroyed him. We'd be singing a whole different tune about Sabbatini right now if he was the one who came out victorious the other day. Instead, we kinda point and laugh. It's not as if anyone else said those comments, he opened his own mouth, and got himself into this. Don't call out the #1 player in the world unless you're ready and capable of taking him down.
  13. 4 hours and 50 minutes? Hehe, that's nothing. Two years ago I played one of our county courses. It's pretty cheap to play, therefore it attracts a lot of golfers, and maybe one group in every five or six groups might know how to play golf at an efficient pace. Let's just say that round took close to six hours. We were waiting on every tee for at least 20 minutes, and there seemed to be at least two other foursomes waiting on the tee when we'd get there. No rangers in sight, and the problem wasn't just with the group ahead of us. They were playing on the ass of the group ahead of them, and so on, and so on. I haven't played at that course since. It's unfortunate because for being such a cheap course, it's a Robert Trent Jones design, and I really like some of the holes on it (when they manage to keep it in decent shape). I'll probably play it again, but just go into it ahead of time knowing that it's going to be a long day.
  14. I'm all for that, except I work full time now as it is. If I could convince my wife to let me work there for less pay, but be able to golf more, I'd have it made.
  15. Thanks guys, that course looks pretty sweet. I like the idea of a bunch of replica holes from other courses. It would definitely be different than any course I've played up here in NY.
  16. Oak Hill Country Club, East Course. Great course. Held the 1995 Ryder Cup, 2003 PGA Championship, 3 U.S. Opens, and soon to hold the 2008 Senior PGA Championship. And it's about a 5 minute drive from my house. That's private, and the two times I've gotten in to play have been at the kind invitation of one of the members there. So that may or may not ever happen again. As for public courses, I thought Kaluhyat at Turning Stone resort was beautiful. Played it earlier this year. 132 slope rating from the white tees. Not much room for error. Also enjoyed the Magnolia Course at Disney.

    HD coverage

Is it just me, or is the NBC HD coverage a bit spotty during the golf tournaments? What I mean is, you'll go to a camera on one hole and the picture is very sharp, very clear. Then they go to a different camera, and it's crap. It's as if some of their cameras are more equipped for the HD than the others. CBS HD is excellent though. No complaints there.
  18. From ESPN.com: Someone buy that fan a beer
  19. I'm thinking she'll shed the "O-choke-a" label and win. She's been so close in so many of the recent majors. Eventually the odds have to go with you at least once you'd think.
  20. Curse those interwebnet gremlins and their emails! Yeah, by default I noticed it has you auto-subscribe to threads. I've only been here a few days and I had to find the button to turn that off pretty quickly.
  21. Royal Links Golf Club? http://www.vegas.com/golf/courseguide/royallinks.html If that's it, have you played it? And if so, how is it?
  22. I was going to create my own topic, but I guess I will piggyback on yours. Anyways, I don't know of any courses less than $100 in Vegas, but someone told me that the price changes depending on whether or not you're from the state of Nevada or not (i.e. they ask you your zip code, and if it's from out of state, the price jumps). I don't know if there's any truth to that, just something I heard. As far as my question, I'm heading down to Vegas in September and I'm planning on playing a round with a buddy of mine. At the moment we have a tee time scheduled for TPC Canyons. I may end up switching it to The Falls, which is at Lake Las Vegas Resort. I was just wondering if anyone has played down there, and if they have any recommendations on places to play? I'm not worried about price, seeing as I may not get down there again for a long time. I don't mind spending the money to play a good course. Thanks!
  23. I think this quote is appropriate for this thread: "80% of golfers say they've cheated. The other 20% lied"
  24. Playing with a cheater when there's money on the line could be bad, if you allow it to be bad. Make sure to offer to help them search for their ball when it's lost, and that way you can make sure they can't just drop one out of their pocket and say they found it. Also, you can keep a running count on their score for them as well, and make sure they know you're watching them. Once they realize you're actively paying attention to every stroke they take, they'll probably be less likely to try anything funny.
  25. I should think if you're paying for a membership there that they should be more accommodating to you in regards to tee times, within reason of course.
