Astigmatism and Reading Greens
HytrewQasdfg replied to kurtwainwright's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
No depth perception with one eye. That means he can't tell how far it is to the hole with one eye (is it 10 feet or 15 feet, can't tell with one eye.) I have a nephew that lost an eye, causes him all kinds of problems (like knocking over stuff on the table.) I'll throw this out, don't know if it would but at least it's a suggestion. Could you "pace off" your putts to measure your distance? Instead of practicing 1, 3, 5, 10, and 15 FOOT puts practice 1, 2, 4, , 5 and 7 STEP putts. Learn to feel what it is like to hit a put 5 paces from the hole, then when you pace off a putt on a green that is 5 paces hit the ball with that feel. Good luck. -
Brian Manzella Instruction Videos

I've seen one of his commercial videos. To be honest, it wasn't bad, but wasn't great either. It just was. The info seemed solid, but the teaching style just didn't seem to ring a bell with me. That happens. He has a lot of stuff on youtube. Before you go paying for something, I would take a look at some of his youtube stuff and see how it works for you. -
Things you wish you would have known when you started

Remove your driver, woods, and hybrids from your bag. Learn to swing the irons first (including the long irons--go out an buy a 2 iron.) Once you are comfortable with your irons, only then attempt to start hitting woods. -
I've had occasional problems with every shipper. DHL is the only one that, imho, whose service is significantly lower than anyone elses. UPS? The ship a million boxes a day (literally). They are going to have occasional problems. Just the sheer numbers gurantee it. That's why if you ship an expensive item you insure it with them (you do know the 1st $100 insurance coverage is free.) I''ve had to claim insruance for a damaged item for UPS. Had no problems. I'd tell you what happened when I tried to claim insurance on a damaged item with the postal service, but I don't have time to write a 30 page story.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worl...f-courses.html Hugo Chavez moves to close golf courses Hugo Chavez's socialist "revolution" has found its latest victim - golf. By Our Foreign Staff Published: 6:39PM BST 12 Aug 2009 The Venezuelan president launched a tirade against the "bourgeois" sport recently during one of his infamous Sunday national television addresses which can last for several hours. His government has also moved in recent weeks to shut down two of the country's best-known golf courses, according to The New York Times. "Let's leave this clear," Mr Chávez said during a live broadcast. "Golf is a bourgeois sport." Mr Chavez then went on to mock the use of golf carts used by some golfers and claimed this represented the laziness of those who played the game. If the two planned closures go ahead the number of golf course shut down in the last three years will be nine, Julio Torres, director of the Venezuelan Golf Federation. told The New York Times. The majority of closures have taken place in oil producing regions and were initially built for Americans who worked in the industry. Mr Chavez sees the connection between the two as elitist. In neighbouring Cuba, however, the government is allowing foreign investers to build several new courses as part of a determination to increase tourists revenues. The president has said that he has no plans to make golf illegal in Venezuela. "I respect all sports," he said. "But there are sports and there are sports. Do you mean to tell me this is a people's sport?", he said. Venezuela's government has been on a socialist drive, seizing the assets of foreign owned companies operating in the country and nationalising various industries. Mr Chavez was accused of stifling freedom of speech when he recently announced that 34 radio stations would be closed.

You are correct. IF there is technology patented in the club, then they are violating patent laws. Actually, now that I think of it, the use of the logo falls under trademark law, not copyright.
-
Which was my point. You can't just look at someone on the course slicing and say "Why don't they take some lessons and cure their slice?" Maybe they have taken lessons and been unable to cure their slice. You don't know. What is easy for some people is hard for other. When I was a child (8), I sat down at a cousins's drum set and started playing (literally playing along to a record.) For me playing the drums was as natural and easy as walking. My cousin never quite mastered the drums despite taking a ton of lessons. People are different. You can't assume that because lessons helped you and your friends cure your slice that they would cure everyone's slice.

You are confusing copyright laws and patent laws. Patent law covers inventions. Someone develops a new ball cover material. They could patent it. Patents (I believe) last for 20 years. Personally, I think that is a fair amount of time. Copyright covers "artistic" efforts. Books, paintings, a company logo, a company name. Copyrights used to be the life of the creator +50 years (not sure if it has been changed.) If you wrote a book, you would retain the copyright for your lifetime (and your heirs for 50 years after your death.) This, imho, is fair. When someone makes a club exactly like a Mizuno, they aren't violating any laws until they stamp "Mizuno" on it, then they are violating COPYRIGHT laws.

Why don't slicers just fix their slice? Why don't fat people just lose weight? Why don't smokers just quit smoking? All equally clueless statements. Once a habit is ingrained, it can be incredibly hard to change. This is true for all areas of life (not just golf.) Can they be changed? Yes, but people that act as though it is as easy as flipping a light switch (even though for a handful of people it does come that easy) simply don't know what they are talking about.

I don't understand why anyone would want to buy a fake club, knowing it was fake, just so they could have the "name". For the money he spent on these, he could go to golfworks.com and have them assemble a set of Maltby clubs to his exact specs. No, he wouldn't be flashing a big name at the course, but he would own better quality clubs.

What your friend has done is the same as picking up a transvestite in a bar. They may LOOK like a woman, but in the bedroom they won't PLAY like a woman. Your friend's clubs may LOOK like Mizunos, but on the course they won't PLAY like Mizunos.

I have heard of people using a metronome to ingrain timing.

You have that right. I can't think of a single event that is better because they have allowed pros in. Basketball was much more interesting when it was amateurs (and the US team was made up of the best college players.) As an amature sport though, golf offers a lot as an olympic sport.

1.5 inches is a lot of length to add, but.... 1. You can always choke up on your clubs if they are too long, but if your clubs are too short you are stuck, so err on the side of being too long. 2. The lie on your clubs can be adjusted back and forth in minutes. If you adjust them upright and you don't like them, the only thing you are out is the cost of the lie adjustment (btw, it is a good thing to have the loft/lie adjusted on new clubs to make sure they are correct, new clubs are often off a degree one way or another from spec.) 3. You are paying your instructor to teach you to swing. Part of that includes if your swing looks correct with your current equipment. If he says you need longer clubs, it is probably because he sees something in your swing that tells him that. In other words, I would go with your instructor and get the clubs lengthened. BTW, if you lengthen the clubs that much it will increase the swing weight a lot. Each 1/2 inch of length will add 3 swingweight points, so you'll go from D0 to D9 (or whatever +9.) You may want to consider backwieghting the shafts with a plug in the butt end of the shaft or a heavier brand of grips. Every extra 5 grams of grip/butt weight will reduce the swingweight 1 point.

Our local library has a number of Ledbetter videos, but I've never really felt like I've gotten much out of Ledbetter's stuff.

Unless they are wearing their pants low and their underwear is showing (as in the above picture of the guy with the cop.) As soon as I see it I think: punk, crook, trouble. I told my daughter that I didn't care if a guy had staight A's, never been in trouble, she met him at church, and he was studying to be a pastor, if she ever brought home a guy wearing his pants like that I'd shoot him on the spot. Better to nip trouble off early, and guys that wear their pants like that are trouble.

I've never really worried much one way or the other about a person's apperance/personality if they are getting the job done. We can't all be Cary Grant.

I was under the weather last week, so I was cruising the Netflix "play it now" videos for something to watch (actualy, watch and snooze at the same time) when I ran across a golf video call "Explosve Golf" that bragged it would teach you the "nuclear golf swing". I figured this might be good for a laugh (I was half hoping he would yell "pow" or "boom" when he hit the ball like the hammer guy does.) Well, surprise, surprise. It turned out the be one of the BEST golf instructional videos I've seen. An excellent (and concise) breakdown of the modern golf swing, giving the how and why (at least as good as anyone can do in an hour.) It's an older video (the guy is using wooden woods), but the advice seems up to date. Anyway, if you have Netflix, it's worth an hour of your time (and the price is right--free.)

Have you considered say "Dude, you look like a dork dressed like that."

I don't see HOW people play in jeans (at least in warm weather.) I don't even wear jeans when hitting in the net in my back yard. Too uncomfortable, too tight, too hot, and not enough give.
-
I say this happen in a PGA tournament (can't remember if it was Singh or Choi putting.) Long putt and it just knicked the ball marker (which deflected it enough to go into the hole.) Nobody did anything, so I assume it isn't a problem.)

You sleep with your wife, not your putter. Get the irons.

The point is most of your fellow golfers look at your chew spit and your urine in a similar light. Maybe you don't (and that's fine for you), but perhaps you should try and put yourself into the shoes of your fellow golfers and see things from their point of view. Is it gone? Did you happen to miss the posts by people who have had their ball land in chew spit on a green? Obviously it's not gone if people are noticing it on their balls.
