How to get rid of the stuff, that is the question I have. I don't feel like just throwing out my stuff but the thought of selling, packaging and shipping is not appealing. Plus I don't think my stuff is worth anything really. At last count I had 11 putters, 6 drivers, three sets of irons, and an untold number of wedges, chippers, hybrids, etc. Is there a place you can donate to?

Played an executive course today to work on the short game, (plus every course around here is booked). Anyway, I used the 9W for 140 - 145 yard holes, worked great, nice and straight, lot of confidence with it now, better then my longer irons.
-
I hope I have better luck because I bought the PineMeadow 9W. I upgraded the shaft, we'll see what happens. Playing with it for the first time today.

I was fitted years ago for a set of Ping irons and woods. My irons were a blue dot which if I remember correctly is a slightly different lie then their standard black dot. My driver and woods were all "standard", no adjustments needed. I guess I am average in terms of physical build and swing. Same when I was fitted for a Cleveland driver years later. Usually when you buy a club at a name brand store or golf shop it comes with a free fitting vs buying on Ebay or other on-line retailers. I would go with that. Also, I don't remember there being any adjustments for lie angle on a wood or driver although I could be wrong, (I am not an expert in any stretch of the imagination).

I have a number of hybrids which I am better with then my long irons but given how well I hit my woods I figured I would consider a 9W given how well my friend hits his, we'll see.

As I get older, (I'm 69 now), my game has fallen off. Also I player fewer rounds, maybe one a week but I do try to get to the range. Anyway I have found that I have been having trouble with my long irons. A guy i play with in the league uses a set of woods instead of irons, I think he carries up to an 11W but he plays well. I use a Driver, 3W, 5W and a 7W, I'm thinking of getting a 9W, anyone play that club? The only place I have seen them is at PineMeadow golf, they are under $100.00. Has anyone purchased from there? I ma working on resolving my issues with my irons but so far it has been very frustrating. But I hit my wood really well, go figure.

Anything Ping makes is great, I just wish they hadn't added the feral but then again I'm old school. I still have G15s which I play sometimes. Go for it, you will not be unhappy.

I have played clones, Ping, Callaway, Cobra, and Cleveland irons. Given my level of play, (I rarely break 90 anymore), they are all the same to me. You're hitting a round ball with a flat metal surface. Having said that, I like hybrids and hit them well. I recently purchased a set of Cleveland Launcher HB which are based on a hybrid design. Now I know these clubs are not for everyone, some hate the look. But for me they have helped my game. BTW, I play a Taylor 810CE guitar and yes I can tell the difference in guitars more then I can irons.

This is just my experience and humble opinion. I crushed a disc while serving in the US Air Force in 1971. Back then there were no MRIs so I had a myelogram which showed the ruptured disc was putting pressure on the sciatic nerve cause sever pain and numbness down my left leg. I can tell you that no amount of PT or messages was going to solve this problem. Luckily I had a good neurosurgeon who went in and removed the ruptured part of the disc thus relieving the pain, complete success, I was amazed. I'm 69 years old now and have had two more surgeries, (total of three) on L5S1. Each time the operations were successful. It is not the doctor's fault that the disc had ruptured multiple times, it may again in the future, (in which case I need a fusion). I just thank God there are men and women out there trained to treat back pain and issues like mine. They gave me a good quality of life even though I had some issues to deal with. If you have back pain go see a neurosurgeon, (I do not recommend orthopedist, but that is just my view). Have an MRI and find out what is causing it. If surgery is required don't be afraid of it. In my experience back surgery is not like abdominal surgery, there is little pain when you wake up, in fact in my case the pain was gone. Best of luck to all who suffer.

I don't know if it is a dumb injury but I have had three lower back surgeries the last of which was very successful. I've been playing for a few years with little to no pain as long as I ride for the 18. Anyway the other day I was playing, went to hit my 3W and topped the ball HARD! It sent a shock wave straight into my back and doubled me over, couldn't straighten up for a while. Have had lower back stiffness and some pain ever since. If it doesn't go away soon it is off to see a doctor. All because I topped a ball, go figure.

Great to play with friends ever week. I'm in a league with about 50 men and women and we play every Tuesday. All play about the same, some a little better some not so good, but we're there to have fun. We also kick in money each week, besides greens fees, a little goes to some prize money, but the most goes to help a homeless shelter and a home for battered women. We play a best ball scramble so the game moves along quickly and we don't hold anyone up, plus we all want to get to the 19th hole. Given we're all older folks we play it forward, again to speed up the game. Bottom line, we're all into the game and play by the rules that we have set up. It is great fun and we all look forward to the next Tuesday.

Suggestions on Irons for a Beginner

I looked at Costco On-Line, all they had was a women's set. You might want to look at Cobra as well, check Ebay of course. -
What if I Play a Ball for Slower Swing Speed?
cooke119 replied to barnum1's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I play all different makes of balls from top flights to Pro v1s, (when I find them). I never noticed a difference in carry, except I tried the KIrkland 3 piece ball I bought at Costco. I definitely lost carry yardage, like 10 yards maybe. I looked up a review of the ball and they said it was not for a person like myself who has a slower swing speed, compression ratio is to high, They recommended a compression ratio between 55 and 75, (whatever that means), I never see compression ratio listed on the box so how is one to know? Anyone else find a make of ball that causes a loss of yardage? I'm 69 years old, have had three back surgeries, swing speed around 90 mph with a driver. -
I have used my Cobra S3 3W for many years, it is my go to club off the tee and the fairway. If it breaks I'm screwed.

I always ask first especially when playing with someone for the first time. Some want you to so you can follow the ball, some don't it distracts them. But I ask at the beginning of the round. I want someone behind me because of my eye sight, I need another set of eyes on it.
-
I know I am not answering your question but I would go see a good neurosurgeon, (I don't recommend orthopedic doctors, my personal opinion),have a complete exam including an MRI and see what he or she says. Lower back pain is nothing to fool around with. I have had three lower back surgeries, (L5S1). Now I am able to play without pain although I cannot walk 18, I have to use a cart.

Thoughts on Noodle Long and Soft

Nice game. My wedge play, (such as it is), doesn't chew up the cover so I'm good for the whole round except I'll lose two ball during a round, (LOL). A guy in the league I play in said he lost 10 yards using the Kirkland ball, I think that is BS, I notice no drop off in carry. Played a very tight course yesterday, little rough and a lot of trees, so I used my 3W a lot, I was putting them out there where the guys using a driver were putting them. Please note that myself and all the guys I play with are in our late sixties and early seventies so our carry distances aren't that long, maybe 200 yards, roll out to 210 or so. I like the ball, One thing I do really like is how it sounds and feels off the putter, I had four birdie putts, our team in the best ball scramble came in 6 under par, won $40.00, good day. -

i also lose balls during a round so price is a factor. To tell you the truth at my level of play I can't really tell the difference between balls. I have ProV1s and Top Flites, can't tell the difference. So now I play the Costco Kirkland 3 piece ball, they work for me and they are just over a dollar a ball, my price range. I'm sure others will differ from me on ball selection. -
Last (Golf) Thing You Bought?
cooke119 replied to JYB's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
48 Kirkland 3 piece balls at Costco and three gloves. I'm done buying clubs, I have a garage full of clubs, don't need anymore. -
Moving Away From the Big Brands
cooke119 replied to jmanbooyaa's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I just bought another pair of FJ Classics, I think I paid like $75. These are probably my fourth set, I just like the look. I compared others but went with the FJs. I like to be able to change the soft cleats each year. They last a long time as well and are very comfortable. So I would have to say no I have not moved away from the big brands. -
Anyone Still Playing Golfsmith Clubs?
cooke119 replied to NHpro's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Be careful with your back, I've had three back surgeries, (L5S1), but I'm now back to playing with the doctor's permission, so far so good. Let us know how you are doing. I know it is your decision but I would recommend a neurosurgeon versus and orthopedic doctor if it is really bad. -
Irons v Hybrids - Returning Sr Player Long Layoff
cooke119 replied to Falbert's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I'm 69 years old and like you only drive the ball 180 to 190 yards. I hit my 3W just as far so I use that a lot off the tee. As far as long irons go, I don't hit anything high then a 7 iron, I use hybrids. My set up is driver, 3W, 5W, 7W, 19* hybrid, 25* hybrid and 7 on down. I cover all my distance with those clubs. I cannot hit a 6 to 4 to save my life, don't ask me why, wish I could. But I hit hybrids very well and along with the 7W I'm in good shape, (although you wouldn't know it from my index but that has more to due with my short game which sucks). Welcome back to the game, enjoy yourself, no pressure. -
Right, other then the grip, (he kept putting his right index finger down the shaft), I just let him have fun hitting the ball. He did have trouble with his woods but his irons were hit well, of course he hit the mat a number of times but hell I do that myself, LOL.

Took my 7 year old grandson to the driving range yesterday with his new set of clubs. He had a lot of fun hitting balls for the first time, no pressure on him. Taught him how to hold the clubs and let him swing away. Hope he gets hooked. Great fun for me too.
