  1. I'm sure you don't need to hear this from a 17 year old, but that's golf. There will be days when it seems like nothing goes right, and there will be days where every iron is as pure as the last. It happens to everybody, and the last thing you want to do is go and blame your swing and try and fix it. Hell, Michael Jordan had games where he didn't even score 10 points.
  2. The main thing I noticed: FOLLOW THROUGH, NOT BACK! Hanging back like that will result in a weak slice a majority of the time. Try swinging with your feet together to promote better balance and control.
  3. More often than not my big score is caused by me trying to be a hero, e.g. trying to play a 90 degree cut with a 3-wood around a tree instead of just punching out, taking driver off the deck, trying to play a stinger hybrid when the wind is gusting in my face and hooking it O.B., or my personal favorite, trying to take 3-wood out of a fairway bunker on a long par 5. Sure there are times when it's perfectly appropriate to try these shots, but usually it's just stupid (especially the 3-wood from the bunker). I've gotten a lot better at keeping my impulses in check, but there are times when adrenaline gets the best of me and I try to hit the miracle shot.
  4. I just went and hit a few balls as tense as possible and taking the club outside, and the craziest thing happened: I whiffed. I knew your advice couldn't be wrong so I thought it must have been something I was doing. I went back and re-read your post, but I found I was following it closely so i went back out and tried it again. I made contact, but this time it was a feeble slice that went about 80 yards. Hmm... "Maybe I've been swinging correctly all along," I thought to myself. "Maybe this guy is just an idiot." I loosened up and took the club back inside, and you'll never guess the result! It was a 290 yarder with a 2 yard draw. I'll take it.
  5. I saw my golf coach at a course today after I had finished playing with a few of my buddies (shot 83) so I went up and said hello, and as soon as he greeted me back I got an enormous whiff of pure Jack Daniel's. He proceeded to repeat the same four sentences while we played a hole together (I 3 putted for bogey; I'm lucky he won't remember it though), but it was still a lot of fun to see him in the real world being a hammered goofball. It got me really excited for the season, then disappointed because it's 5 months away.
  6. Indeed he did. I spit a fair amount on the course. It's not the best of habits, but I don't really see it as hurting anybody.
  7. First high school match of my life, 3rd hole par 5: Drive OB Drop Drive OB Drop Hybrid Topped Hybrid Skied 6-iron punch OB Drop 6-iron punch OB drop Sand Wedge punch 6-iron OB Drop 7-iron Wedge Putt Putt Yep, a 17 on 1 hole. I gave up, shot 61, cut my wrists.
  8. Something similar to the 784px × 588px picture he put in the original post.
  9. That's so cool and so frustrating at the sime time. If I were you, I wouldn't be able to bear the sight of that ball (assuming they don't let you enter). Keep us updated on what customer service says. I've got my fingers crossed for you.
  10. I sprayed my tee shot right on a 190 yd par 3 then waited for some heavy rain to pass for about 30 minutes. After I came back, I severely underestimated the effect of the wet thick rough and my "approach" rolled about 10 feet into the green side bunker. From there all I was focusing on doing was getting the ball out of the sopping wet sand so I aimed about 6 feet left of the pin and just bored through the wet sand with all my strength and my ball popped up beautifully, bit hard and rolled right into the cup.
  11. Sergio looks like he really wants the FedEx. It's not a major, but it's pretty much the next best thing. I would love to see him take it home. *knock on wood*
  12. Another driver and I were both trying to proceed through the same yellow. I was going straight through, she was turning left, and I guess thought it would be funny to turn in front of me while I was going 50. She got the fault and a ticket for "failure to yield."
  13. I draw an alignment line down the side of my ball, but whenever I use it to line up a putt, I either don't trust it and watch the could have been line be the right one, but more often than not (~90% of the time) line it up, and have it be the wrong line. I have no idea what my problem is. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to line it up properly, other than just doing it, which is what I should be able to do but can't for some reason. Also, it's not my green-reading that's the problem because I can't even do it for straight putts.
  14. 2007 Jeep Compass Rallye Edition It makes me feel right at home because it goes about as fast as a golf cart. I had a 2004 Mustang GT in competition orange. Long story short: http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/4758/dsc0009ve8.jpg
  15. I'm a fan of the Winn Dsi myself. It's extremely comfortable and pretty cheap. If you're looking for more of a cord grip (not as comfortable, but literally a better grip), the Golf Pride New Decades are pretty nice. It really depends on preference. Some people prefer a softer grip, some prefer a grip that offers better control. If you want both, the Winn PCi is a hybrid, and it's pretty nice.
  16. I did an outing once where each foursome had a special ball that rotated between each member, starting with the lowest handicap, and the score that the player recorded with the orange ball was put on a different card than his own, and the foursome with the lowest orange ball score got a prize. This would require four $25 prizes though, so you could take out most holeouts if you want the higher handicappers to get prizes.
  17. Wedge juggling is surprisingly easy to learn, and other than the OP I guess, it impresses pretty much everybody if you can do some neat tricks. Just hold it on the end of the grip and try for 15 minutes and you'll be able to do it 100 times assuming your hand-eye is better than a toddler's. All the neat tricks take a lot more practice though. It's a good cure for boredom during a slow day on the course. Quick story, my buddy and I finished a round and on the 18th green he takes his ball and goes, "check this out" and lobs it into the cup from like 5 feet. I had to one-up him so I dropped my ball on my LW, juggled it a few times, then went behind my left leg, popped it up over my head and one-bounced it into the jar. Luckiest thing of my life. And don't worry, the course was empty.
  18. It won't cost you a whole lot if any more than just buying the clubs themselves. A lot of things get taken into consideration when getting fitted, e.g. stance, height, arm length, your swing in general, etc. It's definitely worth it. Also, I know Golfsmith does fitting, and the closest one to you is in Webster.
  19. If you want a new finish without the rust I would recommend this: http://www.por15.com/ If not, some Jig-a-loo would help to prevent rusting.
  20. I'm not saying I don't love Caddyshack, but I do think it's slightly overrated. Tin Cup is the best IMHO. My slogan thing is from the movie.
  21. I think if a few guys want to go out to a golf course, throw back a few beers, fix a few lies, and take a ton of mulligans, that's completely fine. Like someone said, if I'm rallying with a tennis partner for fun, and he hits after two bounces, I'm not going to throw a hissy fit. However, if I'm playing golf seriously with another person who is even a semi-serious golfer, it is a little frustrating to watch him prop his ball up in the rough, or back heel it away from a tree. By no means am I a stickler for the rules. I've let blatant infractions slide by me in competition; I'm going to worry about my score and no one else's. If someone does want to cheat - cool, let him - but it does say something to me about his integrity. There's a big gap between cheating and having fun. The latter is 100% acceptable from a rule-bending standpoint, but the former does speak for someone's character.
  22. I'd rip the big dog down the chute. No hesitation. Then go flag hunting from there unless I'm too far on the right, I really don't want to mess around with that bunker. The farther right I am, the more I'm playing the middle of the green.
  23. If you're just pushing the ball, that's an easy fix. Just work on slightly turning your hands over through impact. This will close the clubface and result in a nice draw instead of a push.
  24. Like nbgc said, when you hit what would be a fat shot on a range mat, your club simply bounced off and still makes clean contact with the ball, whereas on grass, your club would go right into the dirt and possibly snap your wrists. It's not horribly difficult to tell what would have been a fat shot on a mat if you're paying attention. If you're problem is topping on grass and not on the mat, my only guess would be that since you can't really hit a fat shot on a mat, you have no problem going right at the ball, but on grass, you don't want to hit it fat, so you're not totally committing to the shot.
  25. I play my hybrids like a play all my other irons. Just in front of center, but I only take a very small divot with them. If I try and play it like a wood in the front of my stance, I either pull the hell out of it, or hook it big. If you're more comfortable playing it like a wood, then go nuts. I would say there's really no right or wrong way to position a hybrid. If you start to pull it though, you may want to consider moving it back a little in your stance. One last piece of advice when it comes to hybrids, and you said it yourself is don't over swing. Since it looks like a wood, you may have a tendency to try and rip it like one, but all you have to do is make a smooth swing and the ball will take off.
