  1. I have an old Ping Anser in brass. As TitleistWI says it's soft but not as soft as putters with inserts. In any case, putters are a very, very personal thing. Go with what looks, feels and performs best for you.
  2. I've never understood the idea of having rusty clubs in my bag next to all my other clubs! Does this increase the risk of rust for my other iron heads/shafts?
  3. For a 15 h'capper, do yourself a favour and go with the 775CB. Why make the game harder than it needs to be?
  4. I have an old all brass Ping Anser. Then I switched to a Callaway mallet with an insert and now a Carbite semi-mallet, also with insert. Personally, they all had good feel and this is a "whatever works" is best call. Having said that, inserts that promote a truer roll at the start eg Yes! putters, etc also make a lot of sense. I've yet to convert but my cousin has gone to a Yes!
  5. I don't see anything wrong with a mixed set, so long as the mix makes sense. Unless you can provide the exact mix, it's very hard to say if this makes sense in your particular case.
  6. From a 50-deg GW, if you can only get 1 additional wedge, I'd go for the 56-deg SW with 10 to 12-deg of bounce (Vokey, Cleveland CG14 or Mizuno MP T). The issue with the 56-deg is when you want a LW, you are forced to go to 60-deg to keep a 4-deg gap between your wedges. If you want to go to 2 wedges immediately, you can opt for a 54-deg and a 58-deg or keep with the 56-deg and 60-deg. But you won't go far wrong with either option.
  7. I prefer the "specialist" sand wedges to those that come with the set. Go with the Vokey or even Cleveland CG14 on the SW with a minimum bounce of 10-12 degrees.
  8. My girl is just over 2 yrs old now...welcome to parenthood. 5 index points and 4 hours of sleep are a small price to pay for such a bundle of joy. With his knee op, Tiger will really get to enjoy his time with Sam...no amount of money can buy such love and bonding...
  9. For a high h'capper, I'd look for all the help that I could "buy" and that would come from the Callaways (e.g. x-14 to 20, big bertha from 2004 to 2008), Ping G10 or TM rac OS2 and CGB Max. Or if looking for a hybrid set, then the Adams A3 OS. If money was not an issue, I'd personally opt for the Ping G10.
  10. The shaft is brilliant. I tried all 3 shafts that they had on the 2007Sumo in the shop - Diamana, Aldila Proto VS65 and UST V2. The Diamana was too whippy, the UST V2 had no flex in it but the Proto By You was just great. Btw, I'm a smooth swinger and hit the driver about 240-250 yds. The reviews say that if you are a hitter it works equally well.
  11. For me the US Open was the best major of 2008, followed by the USPGA, Masters and lastly the British Open. The US Open had all the thrills and spills, and did Tiger and Rocco put on a show. The USPGA because of the close finish. The Masters started off rather dull but got better on the weekend. And the British Open? Where's the joy in watching this unless your a fan of Survivor IV.
  12. Couldn't agree more wrt callys x-14, x-16 or even big berthas 2004onwards, and the TM rac os2. Also look into ping G5. Try as many as you can but it may be difficult to do so for the older generation models.
  13. Why anyone would put Phil in the same league as Tiger is astonishing! Sure on any given day (match play) or week (over 4 days in an entire season) Phil or any number of golfers can take it to Tiger (see Rocco at the US Open). But no one can stay with Tiger over any length of time. And now, Padraig Harrington has stamped himself as the #2 player in the world. Paddy probably has a higher chance of another major vs Phil. I think Phil's entering the twilight of his career and I don't see him having the work ethic of say Vijay Singh which would see him win as often in his 40's. Plus, amongst the crop of young guns, a few of them could really breakout eg Anthony Kim or Martin Kaymer.
  14. an increasingly common problem with newer sets...I'd consider 3 wedges. My first preference is 50 (GW), 54 (SW) and 58 (LW) and an alternative is 50 (GW), 56 (SW) and 60 (LW). Get the GW as part of the TM set and the SW and LW in Titleist Spin Mill.
  15. You didn't specify a budget, but if you are looking for forgiveness, any of the Callaways - Big Bertha 2004 thru' 2008 or X-14 thru' X-20 series or the Ping G5, G10 or Rapture would be very good. I'd avoid the TM r7 Draw but would consider the plain TM r7 (non-draw). At a 14 h'cap, you could play most anything non-blade. Happy hunting.
  16. Sure his problems are all self inflicted and yet I can't but help feel sorry for the guy. What a waste of his God-given talents. I guess you've got to take the good with the bad.
  17. unfortunately if you buy off the shelf, the standard offerings are 45-inches. with the latest quest for distance, many are moving upwards of 45-inches. i'd agree with sandwedge74...moving to a 44 or 44.5-inch driver gives us more control and confidence, and more likely greater distance (on average vs individual drives). more importantly, it also keeps us in the short grass more often and hence lowers our overall scores.
  18. i think it's a difficult call to make. different companies are better for different things. E.g. drivers and woods - Callaway or Taylor Made, Hybrids - Adams or Cleveland, Irons - Mizuno or Titleist, Wedges - Cleveland or Titleist.
  19. have you considered making a set of irons? if you are looking at forged irons, golfworks is having a sale of the maltby M-05 (3-PW) heads for $125. get properly fitted, and you may be quite happy to use this set till you get down to a single digit hcap. you could use the couple hundred $ saved from a branded set to get some lessons too. whichever way you go, happy hunting. i believe that deciding on a set of irons/equipment is part of the fun of the game of golf.
  20. cannot agree more with your move. I replaced my 3 iron with a hybrid (21-deg). But I'm also not very comfortable with the 60-deg LW. So, I do most of my pitching/chipping with either the GW (51-deg) or SW (56-deg).
  21. oh dear....her advisers, handlers, coaches, parents, etc...don't they ever learn from their past mistakes? Despite her "eye candy" attributes, she shouldn't be on the pga tour until she's won the grand slam in the lpga tour.
  22. i just bot a "new" 2007 sumo (moi 4950) with the aldila vs proto by you shaft for about $200. Had played both the callaway big bertha and taylor made drivers in the past and was never a nike fan. Took the new sumo to the driving range and .... wow, this thing goes. Ultimately, given most 460cc heads today with moi around 4800-5200, I believe it's all in the shaft and not really the head. Get fitted to the right shaft and you'll maximise your drives.
  23. I started playing golf in Feb 1997 and watched in awe as Tiger Woods won the Masters in April that same year. When he went on to win multiple majors, some in spectacular fashion by lapping the field, I've been a huge Tiger fan ever since. Sure, he has a little way to go before he catches Jack's 18 Majors but he's still ahead of the curve (ie he's winning the same number of majors at a younger age). Let's hope that his ACL injury doesn't do long term harm to his career. Even if it slows him down some, I still believe he'll "find a way to get it done".
