  1. Dave, with all due respect, what will the above matter to inner cities where the violence is rampant? You're focused on these tragic events or suicides or ... Criminals are going to continue to kill using handguns. All of these "stats" every anti gun person cites never contains the good that guns do. The main stream media as they shill for the Democrats and the anti gun lobby make sure the negatives are reported and the positives rarely make air time.
  2. Dave, you missed the point. That's fine. I'm not here to argue. However, don't go visit some of your neighbors. (Relatives that live in Colorado) I know them. They have guns and they make things go boom. The President just made a statement that "we know that Assault Rifles were used" ... Why does he mislead the American Public? He has to know full well that the AR 15 is not an Assault Rifle. Therefore, he is absolutely lying to the American People. He would be one of those that would tell the ignorant that "AR" stands for Assault Rifle. In fact, it does not. The AR15 does not "fit the definition" of an assault rifle. It is not "fully automatic!" Edited to add: Just because a weapon looks like an assault rifle as does the AR15, in function it is not. Looks don't determine the definition but people are so ignorant of the differences.
  3. I did want to edit my previous post to make one clarification but too late. Ammonia Nitrate is tacked. However, we have had a rash of thefts in my area, it can be used for meth production along with explosives.
  4. Tell McVeigh and Kaczynski that. However, this post above is a pretty good example of someone who doesn't spend much time with muzzle loaders etc. Invariable, when one loads their own shells or has powder around, things go boom. McVeigh just need 5,000 lbs of ammonia nitrate and some gadgets. He killed 168 people. You live in Colorado. You might be around farming and so that as easy to get as a hamburger at a fast food restaurant. I'd love to see the stats behind your supportable assertion. No one in the Middle East or these suicide bombers seem to have a problem with making thing go boom.
  5. What about a drive by bombing? What about the Unabomber Ted Kaczynski or others like him. If a gang wants to kill, it is just as easy to make a bomb. How about Timothy McVeigh and Oklahoma City?
  6. Dave, I am actually torn about this type of scenario some. I live in Small Town USA. So, we know who in our small town is pretty good with firearms and who is good with bows. Deer deer season is huge. In fact, one of our administrators wished some of the students good luck yesterday during the announcements as deer season is upon us and this is the last weekend of "firearm" season before it turns to muzzle loaders. The second round of archery season will begin on Monday. Anyway, one of the parents of one of my students asked me this week why I don't have my conceal and carry permit. I just never find the time. However, this parent said that they would feel much better if I had one. I know I can shoot with the best of them. I've been doing it since I was 7. Still, what happens when there is panic and a bunch of people running around? I know I won't panic and I know I will hit what I shoot at. Still, they say Police Officers only hit their target at a rate of something like 37%. Then again, I know I can out shoot many, if not most of our police force. How do I know? I'm their Uncle. (Reference Small Town) Still, with all things considered and my reservations, I do believe I'm going to get my Conceal and Carry Permit. If my wife was in one of these situations, I'd want someone like me there. Take care, Darrell
  7. I stole this line from a friend on another site. "Blaming San Bernardino terrorist attack on the Second Amendment is like blaming 9/11 on the Wright brothers." That same logic would apply to what will happen in Chicago this weekend. Still, it doesn't seem many who complain are spending any time in Chicago to fix that problem. Another buddy made the point that France has had 3 recent attacks. Also, this same buddy made the point that for much of the world, bombs are the weapon of choice where the perpetrator can escape but causing similar, if not, more damage.
  8. Sad story but wanted to share. I played with a local guy at my course this past spring. We were both singles and so, shared a round. He typically golfs with another group but was late for his tee time and they had departed. Anyway, we played and I noticed he sometimes left a stroke off here and there. It didn't matter to me since we were not playing for money. I didn't think much of it then and had forgotten it until now. A buddy asked me if I had heard about what happened to this guy. I had not. He forgot how to drive home. Such a sad story. He has dementia and so will now be done with golf.
  9. I've already made my opinions known and so, I'll save you the trouble of hating me for my opinion. Instead, I'd like to point out that most of us share a love of the game of golf. It is something that I find transcends so many differences. We call all relate to that quest for the elusive birdie and the rare Eagle and some just may get that Albatross. I've been a moderator of several sites and for over a decade on a couple. It isn't easy and, to be honest, you just can't please everyone. One thing that is so hard to do is preserve the climate of a site. Yes, the topics here in the Grill Forum are intended to stretch or represent different interests of membership. Still, it can get personal and so, I do understand why a Moderator steps in. Been there and done that and no matter what, Moderators just can't win. JMHO!
  10. I need to stay out of threads like this but will add one more opinion. When talk turns to these tragedies, it is east to look up the numbers and cry out about how guns kill. If one were to look at Chicago etc. you might understand that guns aren't the problem but instead a culture created by dependence upon the government where the male has been taken from the home so that the government assistance check can be granted, the deplorable level of education, a culture that exist where "snitches get stitches" and those in that area refuse to clean up their own neighborhoods by turning in the guilty. This climate and culture is not about race. It happens throughout America as witnessed first hand by me when I grew up. More people will be killed this coming weekend in Chicago than in this senseless tragedy. Yet, no one will take action or care. I went to look at our local news for shootings this week. We have had four. One guy high on drugs tried to invade a house in a very small community where I teach. He was shot. One 13 year old was robbing cars and pulled a weapon. He was shot. One "robber" was shot by Police and we had one guy cleaning his gun when it went off and the Police were called. There was only a slight injury in that case. I live 20 miles east of St. Louis. I have my opinions about what happened last night in San Bernadino. I'll wait to see if I am correct. I've done the math with the young lady. She was married 8 or 9 months ago. She gave birth to a child 6 months ago. Her husband went to marry/meet her at their marriage. The math doesn't add up. Again, I'll wait for more info.
  11. Quotes of men who were well aware of the nature of unlimited government and evil men. I will not try to convince you anymore, but if you truly believe in being unarmed, declare your own private "Gun Free Zone"... Just don't try to enforce your foolish notions on those of us who cherish the God Given Rights of freeborn men. I appreciated your quotes. Thank you! I might add that one contributor, Alexander Hamilton, died from a gunshot in a duel. He didn't believe in dueling and let his intentions be known that he would not shoot at Aaron Burr. So, Burr had time to aim and fire. Still, Hamilton understood the importance of American citizens owning firearms as demonstrated by his quote.
  12. I enjoyed reading your thoughts here! I hope to never again fire my weapons in anger but have done so in anger. It is important to note that a vast majority of firearms owners will never fire their weapons in anger.
  13. rkim, and in a similar situation, I got stuck. Thought the kid was cool, at least with me, and out of nowhere I was bleeding all over the place. Had I had a gun he would have been dead and he would have deserved to be dead. Instead, I grabbed a coke bottle and beat him. I've never seen him since. His intend was to stab and rob me. I have the right to defend myself and the police agreed with that. rkim, what would you do to protect your family? You think you're a bad enough dude to take care of business? I'm a bad dude and I don't mind saying so and yet, I've found out just how much it matters being a bad dude when the other guy has a weapon. I've often said that the one thing I know about my wife more than anything else is that she knows that she is safe with me around.
  14. chspeed, to be honest, I was too emotional and should apologize some for what I said. I sat up night after night with my weapons waiting for a guy I never knew who somehow knew everything about me. Where would I have been had he showed up and I was not armed? Fortunately, he was way up north and the FBI had enough time to track him down before he did harm to anyone on his hit list. Again, I could tell you so many things that have happened to my family that a normal person would never believe. To say that we now take care of our family and it would behoove people not to mess with us is an understatement.
  15. chspeed,I hope you never need a gun to protect your family or yourself. I grew up in a bad place and have been in dozens of fights. Unfortunately, as I grew up, others turned to knives and guns and so, I've been stabbed and somehow avoided getting shot. I have had to use my guns several times to protect myself and my family. Along with having been stabbed, I was almost beaten to death two different times. One of which where I was worked over with a baseball bat and pretty much left for dead. chspeed, do you know what it is like to regain consciousness and realize your teeth are all knocked out of your mouth and you can't walk or crawl to get help? Do you know what it is like to have been beaten so badly by four guys that you tell yourself that if you don't get up and run, you are dead? chspeed, do you know what it is like to have a guy make a comment on social media that he is going to kill several people and their families and have law enforcement contact you and tell you that a crazy man is out there saying he is going to kill you? That guy is in prison now after the FBI finally tracked him down. To say I am an armed camp is an understatement. chspeed, do you know what it is like to get a cellphone call from your wife, who is out in the barn, telling you there is a guy in the barn and she needs help? Believe me, that guy's life will never be the same again. The little buddy I took along that day has an extended clip and will/did rock and roll. You must live in Utopia. I don't. I could tell you who my family is but they might scare you. There are books written about my family and believe me, what I have to protect my family is minuscule in comparison to what they have. You would really hate us! Now, after my rant, I learned to shoot at age 7 in a gun course. I am in favor of anyone getting a weapon having to take a gun course. I am in favor of more in depth background checks and longer periods of time waiting to get a weapon. What I might call a "cooling off period" for those that might be making an emotional purchase. Still, I am a major gun advocate and know first hand how firearms can save lives.
  16. His last name was Keys (sp) and I was very young. I remember him and his dad in Murray, Kentucky walking around. I'd have to guess it was in the late 60s or maybe early 70s. I used to attend basketball coaching clinics at UK when Pitino was the head coach. He was a pretty cool guy. I also attended U of Indiana coaching clinics. One of my best friends was an assistant coach for Ron Felling. As you might know, Felling and Coach Knight had a falling out. However, before that, it was pretty neat getting to have conversations about basketball with Coach Knight. In fact, he gave me a "warm up" jacket that I still have. Per the Wildcats, it is hard to warm up to teams where you know that they are one and done. That has taken some of the fun out of it for me.
  17. The Wife and I never go to the movies. However, when our daughter comes home every once in a while, she brings movies and we have movie night. She just left to go back to her apartment and college. Anyway, we watched Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect II along with Divergent this weekend. We had a great time doing so and I really look forward to these weekends when we get to be a family.
  18. If I don't play, I'll lose my membership.
  19. Where was a political statement in my response? It was suggested that I was somehow adding a "spin." No attempt to belittle anyone and apologize if anyone took it that way. Mr. Desmond, you have a good day.
  20. I didn't use this chart but another. Thus the exact numbers. Also, I was mentioning FDR in my post. To make it "modern" I referenced presidential tenures more current. Man, was that hard to figure out?
  21. There is a difference between the number of Executive Orders passed and the impact of those Executive Orders. While some Presidents such as FDR were criticized for the number and effect of their Executives Orders, the" historical times" can not be overlooked. Then, there is the nature of those order. In promoting the use, there is a difference between Executive Orders deemed necessary for the protections of this country or to fill a societal need not addressed by Congress as opposed to promoting a political agenda and attempting to bypass Congress. To put a "modern" spin on this, Carter and issued 320 in his 4 years and Regan issued 381 in his 8 years. Bush I issued 166 in 4 years and Bush II issued 291 in 8 years. Obama is currently, as of October 20th, 221.
  22. There are several twists you could add here. I was playing a hole on a course rarely open to the public and it had been raining off and on during our round. I was playing with some friends when I hit a shot and the heavens opened up. It absolutely poured. We went to the green to mark our balls as the horn blew. I had plugged about a foot from the hole and I mean plugged! I have lived wondering what ifs had this been a normal day of golf. I have never had a hole in one and so ... (Note - Course was open to us since one of my friends won a round for 4 in a charity auction. Also, we never finished that round. It never worked out for all of us to go back even though they offered another date when we finished.)
  23. In my World History Class, we are watching, The Lion in Winter. My students really enjoy this video and the wit contained in the video.
  24. Per citizenship, both Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis were stripped of citizenship after the Civil War. Some have argued that he only lost his right to vote but several books suggest it was total citizenship. On January 30, 1975, Lee was granted, "full rights of citizenship" again.
  25. I have seen this done where a person created the marks while being distracted and they didn't really look at the other golfer's line. What say you about this? Again, it was not intentional at all.
