My rule of thumb for anything inside a 100 yards is my PW. Of course, my SW and LW come into the picture when I need to loft it more and especially when I have little green to work with.

Are you a Better Golfer than a Year Ago?
pganapathy replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Currently I have to say my golf is a lot worse than it was a year ago. That is mostly down to me not playing at all for many months. I was scoring high 70's, low 80's consistently a year ago. Now that I am somehow managing to play every couple of months I am scoring in the 90's, if not worse -
Hands down second place. It means I still have a chance to win it in the future because I played well except for one mistake at the end. In the second scenario you were never in the running to win and winning in the future is potentially harder

Strategy Question About Difficult Opening Hole

Didn't know that. Am assuming there is no net at the back to prevent balls going too long which would explain this rule -
Strategy Question About Difficult Opening Hole
pganapathy replied to Ty_Webb's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I get that it is a short range and I assume a net at the back to prevent balls going further than 200. In any case, hitting a driver 200 yards is enough to give you an idea of ball flight and how you are hitting it. My logic is simply that if you are hitting a club well on the day, go ahead with it off the tee -
Strategy Question About Difficult Opening Hole
pganapathy replied to Ty_Webb's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I know you already played the hole, but my suggestion would have been get early to the course and hit a few balls on the range with Driver, 3W and 2i. See which club is performing best on the day and then hit with that and go ahead. Anyway, seeing your score of +2 and 5 people at -1 I can only assume you didn't make it through. Better luck for next time -
We have different tee boxes you are allowed to play in according to age and gender. But everybody is eligible for the Closest to Pin from their respective tee boxes. For open and handicap titles you are only eligible if you play from the furthest tee boxes, except for women from their tee boxes

Welcome to TST. I am also a golf addict and have been one since my teens after my parents got us pro lessons around the age of 12. This is a great place to discuss and learn

Are You "Loyal" to One Golf Ball?
pganapathy replied to ChetlovesMer's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Vitamin M determines this. A lot of times I am buying used balls and hence by default I am not brand loyal since I buy varied balls. I try to get as many ProV's in that as possible because they tend to perform better even when old. But that depends on what is available. When I buy new it mostly tends to be the Inesis Tour 900 of late, because it is the cheapest three piece urethane ball available in India -
💩is an apt description of the new rule 🤣

This rule change is so stupid. It is not like the players have a time limit after finishing to submit their scorecard. You can take a few minutes to verify your scorecard and then submit it. IDIOTS

U.S. Open Qualifying - How Would Your Course Hold up?
pganapathy replied to TourSpoon's topic in Golf Talk
Our home course would be very interesting. It is short from the black tees (around 6000 yards) and very few holes are considered not reachable in GIR for golfers who drive max 250 off the tee. But there are two difficulties. Only 3 holes don't have an OB though admittedly in some cases it is just behind the green. The harder part is almost all the fairways slope away on both sides from the centre meaning if you hit a draw or fade, you are likely to wind up at the edge of the fairway or off into the rough if you bounce in the wrong place. -
I assume the 3 iron in your iron set would do the job. If you don't have the club, you should be able to buy it as a single club

Strategy - Inverary Golf Club Hole 14
pganapathy replied to 4zim's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Essentially find the longest club you can hit straight and go with that off the tee. You want the shortest shot into the green for your second. If that is the hybrid or 7i or even PW, go with that. You lose a lot more by being OB and having to re-tee -
The Golf Swing Being Repeatable…
pganapathy replied to collegefbfan's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Practice is the key to a repeatable swing. The more you practice the more muscle memory gets ingrained. I took lessons around 12 years old and have been playing ever since. Even now, if I take 6 months away from golf I still have a reasonably repeatable swing thanks to muscle memory -
New Maxfli Tour and Tours Balls?
pganapathy replied to RandyBobbitt's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I know Dean Snell designed the original Pro V along with a couple of other brands tour balls. How exactly does the Snell ball have problems. Did he change something in the design or is a manufacturing error since he cannot afford the unlimited R&D budgets of the big manufacturers to iron out flaws -
I had a 5 wood. Now have moved onto hybrids and have a 4 hybrid. As I get older a more lofted hybrid and/or 7 and 9 woods will come into my bag. I have learnt that as swing speed declines, loft is your friend
-
Well, I have a 2 hybrid, 4 hybrid and then play 6 iron onwards. My best clubs are probably the 4 hybrid and the PW. What I find is that loft is your friend in general which is why my 4 hybrid is so much better than my 2 hybrid. Definitely disproportionately more so than the 5 or so degrees of difference in loft. If you have hybrids, play them. And consider loft as your friend. Invariably you will get up to a loft where anything less will not get you more distance because of your club head speed. Essentially the faster you swing the less lofted a club you can hit effectively. For me it is probably a 4 hybrid and maybe a 7 iron though I could improve both with practice

At What Distance do Your Pull Our Your Range Finder?
pganapathy replied to TapOut64's topic in Golf Talk
Depends on your definition of range finder. There was a time I used my phone with a GPS/golf app and checked distances but wasn't really bothered enough whether it was 78 or 80 or 82. I just thought approximately 80 yards and hit. I essentially use the distance markers on the course to gauge distance and play and if that is considered a range finder then every time. If not, virtually never -
Last Sunday played a tournament. Bad round in general, particularly short game, since I hadn't touched my clubs for 2 months. But on 17 I hit a great drive. A bit risky because there is a water hazard on the right side of the fairway. Was actually the wrong line and length because another foot and I would have been in the hazard entering it half way up. But from there hit a great 4 hybrid and was around 60 or so yards to the green though just off the fairway. Brilliant PW and within2 or 3 feet. Made the putt

With some practice and fixing your driver swing, your ceiling is a lot higher with longer clubs in your bag. Imagine with 5 iron off the tee you are hitting a 7 iron into a hole, then after driver you might be hitting a PW. You would be closer to the green to start, potentially can hit a better and closer shot to the hole and have more options available to you off the tee. It is a no-brainer that you should definitely have the driver in your bag, though you should practice with it to ensure you are hitting it well

A Novice Journey to Building a Bag. (Help Appreciated)
pganapathy replied to retoid's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
A couple of things. Some of the clubs in your bag should be dropped immediately. A 2-iron for example with what obviously seems to be a lower swing speed or possibly not great swing yet is a definite no-no. To be hitting that 120-140 yards, which I assume includes run, is a sign that you are not getting the ball airborne at the correct angle to maximise distance. The reason your 3 and 5 hybrid are going the same distance is that your launch angle is better with the 5. Loft is your friend. Ideally I would suggest going to a golf or sporting store where you can hit golf balls on a simulator without being disturbed to understand your club carry distances and hopefully swing speed. With that information we can definitely guide you better. -
Let us be clear, unless you have proof of cheating, you just sound like a case of sour grapes. In our club we have a guy who won club titles for many years. Yes, he was a low single digit handicapper, but there have been quite a few others who played at his level. Yet his mental strength and experience helped him win in many years when he shouldn't have. Did he sandbag. DEFINITELY NOT. Did he just minimize his mistakes and pull out shots as and when needed. Definitely.
-
I can only assume that isn't a fitness thing but a damaged ankle thing. I would figure he is the kind of guy who would train for fitness/cardio with other exercises that don't stress his leg. Looks like age/injury is catching up to Tiger. He needs to figure out how to play enough to keep in golf shape and not hurt his injured joints, especially the ankle
-
Well, I know guys who think like that in my club. They say with my length, this is the shortest route to the hole and in one case go two or three fairways over to reach a par 5 in 2. Essentially what he was doing was figuring out the easiest route to the green with his length
