Putter type discussion: Mallet, Mid-mallet, Blade
Crey23 replied to Howie's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Easy to say with a 9 HC.... What I men by this is that with some one, with less expertise, can mess up the putt...call it confidence, call it track, call it yips....but there is a certain level of technology into these putters that do tend to help you keep you line. For instance, the TM Itsy, is well know for aiding the face stay in line (helps prevent opening or closing). I think most mallet in generela aid in this, but the Itsy IMHO is the best at it. I have heard the in a pinch you could putt with a wood or hybrid....I have in fact used the 3w from the fringe to chip and worked very nice, but I still feel uncomfortable to use it on the green. I guess I'll have to join a 5 club round one of theese days to see how that pans out -
Putter type discussion: Mallet, Mid-mallet, Blade

Elvis, I had some issues with that myself, and here si what I found...Feel means nothing if I'm inconsistent! I had a blade TM Daytona CBG #1, and switched to a Rife Mr. Beasley and immediately improved my putting. How, I became far more consistent in my trajectory, which is a reason most people switch to mallets vs blades. Mallets tend to maintain the face in the path you intended better. Since I got the Rife my putting average went from 2.6 to 2.2 in few rounds. I was making more 1 and 2 putts than before. Now regarding feel....IMHO Odessey putters lack just that ...FEEL!!! When I started to play last year, all I wanted was an Odessey putter (2 or 3 ball mallets), after all if Dave Pelz recommends them and uses them I figured they would be good for me. I actually found that that was not the case. I perceive better feel from the TM Itsy Bitsy Spider and the rife putters, and with any Odessey putter. To me these putters are rather flat, and the sweet spot is far too small...sure you hit it dead center it glides, but the rest of the face is dead. Check out the Rife and the TM Itsy, you may find these to have great feel . -
GPS app. for Verizon Wireless Smartphone
Crey23 replied to PiustheDrGolf's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
No...You should have to pay additionally for the use of native GPS feature. You may have to pay in Verizon for the use of their navigation services, but nto for GPS. I know that You have torequest to have the lock removed, atleast a few months ago you had to....not sure if it's an automatic removal today. -
GPS app. for Verizon Wireless Smartphone
Crey23 replied to PiustheDrGolf's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Try Golf Logix.... I have this, after trying about 4 or 5 demos on the course. They have best GPS / Scorecard combination. The Only flaw to the GPS is the fact that it does not give any measurements inside of 30 yards, but other than that is great. As for the accuracy is a yard or two out, at least locally (South Florida). I have played about 5 or 6 rounds with it and love it. I also tried: - Green Finder, and while in my opinion the simplest GPS to use, there was no scorecard feature...a must for me on a smartphone app. - nRange, and this is a nice app that uses satellite images to show the course. It allows you to see the distance between you and the green (in a single screen), and if you want more detail you can switch to the areal view that allows you to move the cursor to measure all other hazards. The downside of this imagery, is that it can be slow...then again, I don't have 3G technology on my phone (which is how the images update) that makes this process painful. - Accel Golf, this is probably the best scorecard out there, but it also uses areal images to provide distances. I am very satisfied with my $40 for Golf Logix, the data entry is fast and simple. I highly recommend this product. BTW ~ I am in no way affiliated to this company, I just wanted to provide my opinion as a user. -
There is an interesting article in this month's Golf Digest that talks just about the benefits of longer drivers. I tried linking but I couldn't. In any case check it out..it was pretty insightful.

Shanks, my math is not flawed....the only variable in length is the shaft....your arms should not change. And while I agree that the way you swing (ie your path) that radius will be different, but as I stated, "having a consistent swing..." If you have a consistent swing, and you add 3" to your shaft you will change the radius, and you will add more distance provided you can hit it. With that said...If you were to add 3" to head from, say 2001, I'm sure that your results would be awful. But with todays technology in drivers, on how forgiving some of these are, you can be a consistent hitter at 45.5" or 46". There is some truth to a shorter shaft, but to as far as 43"on the driver is lunacy. As for my game, I realized that there is much more to do with the type of shaft than length. I just switched from a r7 CBG Max to and r7 Limited. The limited and the CBG both had 45.5 shafts, but I was very inconsistent with the CBG, I changed to the r7 Limited, that has a much better shaft, and now I', about 60% on fairway with an additional 20 yards. There is far more that helps your accuracy and consistency than an extra inch or tow in your shaft.

Well my 2 cents.... Personally don't like them at address, but I have no issue using one if it in fact helps me play better. I have played the Nike Sumo and and the Cally Ft-IQ...I didn't like them...nothing to do with head, just the results and feel. Nike drivers sound like a tin can to me....I don't like the sound....in fact I hate the sound the driver makes, and that alone was enough to turn me away. I do have to say that they are not bad...I had decent results with it, and was able to do some shaping. Cally's FT-iQ...I just could get anything worth while out of it..maybe I was just me, but I couldn't hit it for anything. That same day I tried Titleist 909 D2, D3 And Comp, a G10, a V2, a Mizuno Mx560 ( I think) and was getting good results form the Titleist and g10, but the V2 and FT-iQ were no good for me, and the Mizuno sounded like the nike, but louder.... All in all it comes down to player preference, I have friends that hate mallet putters because they lok massive and out of place, but for me, they out perform a blade.....

I'm not sure the above statement is correct...at 43" you are looking at a 3W instead of a Driver.... for me a 45.5 standard length works. That I have issues with consistency is an issue of lack of practice, not club performance. You can always choke down an inch or so if you feel more comfortable, but does not make any sense to me to cut 2" of your shaft. As for the distance, a study in dynamics will indicate that indeed a longer shaft will increase you distance as you increase swing speed. Your swing speed is the linear velocity or tangential velocity at the end of the club (the sole of the head). As the radius (shaft length) increases your linear velocity will increase as well. Putting numbers to this: If my SS is 100mph with a 46" club , assuming a consistent swing, with a 43" club my new SS is 93mph. That's a 7% decrease in SS, and taking some liberty in this calculation a 7% decrease in SS, would translate into at least a 7% decease in distance. Assuming I'm hitting average of 244 Yards (at 100mph), my new distance will be 223 Yards . Man you made go back to school for this..it's been a while since I do dynamics.... Bottom line a longer shaft does add (potentially) more distance, along with a myriad of other components. But when considering a new club, going shorter is certainly a mistake. You should get the 45.5 or 46 clubs and gradually grow to use the fill length, and not the other way around. As for the Burner clubs, these drivers are extremely forgiving. I had counterfeit Burner and was hitting 255 avg yards with a mean slice....I have now a stock r7 Limited and I am back to avg 250's and going mostly straight. Just go out and test a few drivers, get yourself on a monitor and see which driver gives you the results that you are looking for. Anyway, I hope this helps debunk the myth that length doesn't matter....

Affordable 3-piece ball: Suggestion?
Crey23 replied to ohiolefty's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Love them!!! These balls are, in my opinion, underrated. They play long, and reduce spin off the driver, and have good spin of off short irons, and great spin off off wedges. They bit, maybe take a short bounce and stick, but they don't really spin back much....but then again that could just be my game I played them all last year. My first round using them, I went 14 holes without loosing a ball. Highly recommend them. at GG (in stores) the had them for $30 for 24. -
This makes a lot sense to me..... But considering the amount of time off the tee you may be better off with the 3w. You can always choke down to adjust for the gap. I have Driver, weak 3w, and 3h, and hit about 245, 225, 200. I know that I can choke down on any of these to bridge a gap. I also carry 4 wedges. I rather have better control on my short game than worry so much on the upper end, but that is just me. Actually my biggest problem is between my 3h an 4i/5i. I can't hit the 4i for anything!!!! and I hit my 5i about 170/175....that is were I have a hard time.....maybe it's time for 4h.... Granted my hc does not reflect yours, but I do obsess over this game, i just don't get enough playing time to bring it down!!!

Taylor made Burner VS. Cleveland Monster opinions
Crey23 replied to YamahaJay's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I haven't played them myself, but I friend has...She plays about 3-4 rounds a week has a 10 HC, swing speed is about 98mph, and she transitioned from the 07 Burner, to the FT9, to R9, to the Monster in the past 18 months, and she claims that the Monster is the best driver she has ever played....been playing for about 15 yrs. Thats my 2 cents -
Bottom line ....you can't! Go to a Pro and get fitted, they should have the proper equipment to understand what you are doing in your swing, and help identify what will work for you. As for the perfect shaft/head combination, you will never be 100% sure unless you spend a good bit of money. Here's what I did: 1. Define what I wanted to get out of the shaft (more control and a higher kick point) 2. Researched shaft specs that matched the basic characteristics that I wanted. (I went to Titleist (good resource for research), Aldila, Matrix, Graphaloy, UST, etc websites for specs) 3. Went to talk to a pro, get his/her input (confirmed my research with him) 4. Tested drivers with those shafts in place and see what the results were (testing fell and accuracy) 5. Dumped my old driver for an entirely new on one The reason for #5 is that I like using the r7CBG Max head (I like it at address), the shaft on this driver was 45g Regular, and the loft was 10.5*. Even with the weight setup for draws, I was slicing heavily. I felt I had no accuracy with my driver. I had also lost about 20 yards from a previous TM Burner counterfeit driver (avg 250/ long 280). I researched the shaft that I wanted and realized that it would be cheaper to buy the r7 Limited with the Matrix shaft, than to take the chance with the r7 CBG Max head....$150 cheaper!!!!! I tested several r7 Limited configurations 9.5* Stiff, 9.5* Reg, 10.5 Stiff, and 10.5* Reg, and the best setup for me was the 9.5* Reg. With this driver I was able to get my spec in the range or vicinity of where I wanted to be, so with a little more work I can improve to fit those specs. As a result, on my first outing I Averaged and additional 10 Yards, and hit my highest ration of fairway hits ever (8/14)...This was huge for me! I also need to mention that I was playing in 20 mph winds...I should have been kiting instead of golfing.... Bottom Line, this is the best driver that I have hit. It is dead straight, gives you back a few yards, and it (like the CBG) allows to adjust the weight to correct what ever you are dealing with that day. Cheers!

DO IT!!!!! This is a great driver. I just got it about two weeks ago, and I just simply love it. The sound, the looks, and the price!!!! just amazing!!!!!! I switched from a r7 CBG Max, which I was getting ready to drop a NV-65R shaft on it, but found the r7 Limited. The club is very nice and effective. I increased my average yards by 15, and had my personal best fairways hit (8/14), previously I averaged about 5 to 6 per 14. It helped me correct my slice considerably. ( I think a product of the shaft of the CBG). I was playing in 20mph winds, and still managed to keep the ball in play due to the lower launch angles. That was exactly what I was looking for on the new shaft. Bottom line see if you can hit at your local shop, see if you like it. I got mine a golf galaxy for $150...Can't beat that!!!

Return of the Colored Golf Balls
Crey23 replied to iacas's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I like the idea, especially in courses that have very well manicured lawns with multi level fringe and roughs....I've played Don Shula's Senator course and on the 18th hole (dog leg left) where the long hitters can easily go into the rough on the back side of the dog leg. I hit the rough...I could not find my $5 Pro V1, but found about 7 other balls. It took me a few minutes, but I found them. I've been considering getting a pair of blue glasses just to look for the ball. It drives me crazy to loose balls in the rough. Hole #2 on my local course has it in for me....i always ALWAYS loose my balls right, AND I CAN NEVER FIND IT!!!!! I think is not sucha great idea for all players, but certainly for the new players and high handicapers, and the idea that Srixson is doing it on a high end ball, would certainly be more inclined to buy these knowing that it would be easier to find my $5 ball. -
Thanks! I actually went back to setting my tee about a 1/2" higher again. with the CBG Max, this was creating boomerangs (I wish you could call them slices), so I had to tee down. As for the driver, it is a 9.5* Reg shaft. I played this weekend in 20mph winds, and eventhough this was the case, I had 8/14 drives on the fairway..this is a personal best. I know is not something to write home about, a certainly a step in the right direction. the other 6 were even split 3 left, and 3 right, and I think this was mostly due to wind. I think this driver setup is going to work very well for me, in just one outing i built so much confidence on the club, that I wasn't afraid to put it up agaist the wind. There people there teeing up with 4i, and hitting knock downs....... BTW a bit unrelated....i hit my first succesful knockdown on Sunday...I was left of the fairway, under heavy branches, and about 230 yrds from the green.....I remebered Michael Breed ( I think...from the Golf Fix) talk about how to setup....and hit my 3h about 190, with a slight draw, that left em in front og the green....saved the hole, only double boggied ( I fumbled my pitches...2 to get on green, and 2 putt). Again thaks for the info..just wondering how much does the 0.5* less left affect the numbers you simulated?

Out with the old in with the new
Crey23 replied to Boeing777's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Nice set! This is my first real set (had a circa 1980 Ram clubs before) and I love them. I have the 07 model (first style) with graphite Aldila R-75 Proto By You shafts on them. They are very easy to hit, and have great feel. I still can't hit my 4i, but that is my one problem. -
Here again ...we are talking about suggesting a club/shaft combination, without really knowing the stats that drive this decision..... I just bought this driver on Saturday, and took it to the course on Sunday....bottom line Best damn driver I have hit!!!!! My Stats: (with the 9.5* Reg below) SS: ~ 94 mph BS: ~ 135 mph Launch Angle: ~ 12* - 14* Ball Height :~ 27 Ft. I was suffering from a very high ball height, and mean slices. I was gaming an r7 CBG Max with a 45g regular shaft, want to talk about whippy....I left like Indiana Jones playing with this thing....every once in a while you could hear the "splat"at the end of the whip....All kidding aside, I was reddy to get the Aldila NV65-R shaft as it seemed to fit what I was looking for in shaft...so did the Matrix Ozik X-Con 6, but at $300 you can imagine the NV65 was far more appealing. I tried the Nike 5900 with UST V2 stiff, and didn't like it my ball spin with this setup was averaging 5900 rpm. I then found the r7 Limited and tried the following setups: - 9.5* Stiff - did not really match my ss. I was getting good stat, except for distance and some noticeable slices. - 9.5* Reg - Matched my ss perfectly!! I got rid of slices, with the head set to neutral I was hitting straight and slight draws. I was able to reduce my ball spin to average 3700 rpm. - 10.5* Reg - I was getting similar results to the 9.5*, but with about 2* higher launch angle, and this was specifically what I wanted to lower. I played on Sunday in Ft. Lauderdale area in Florida, with wind of 20 mph, and gusts of 30 mph, and I have never had as many fairway hits as I did yesterday. This may not be great for you, but I hit 8 out of 14 fairways. I usually landed as near as the fringe right of the fairway, or occasionally on the far right of the fairway. Yesterday I was well within the fairway, not always on the center, but closer to were I wanted to be. The other 6 mis hits were even split 3 left, 3 right. I only lost 2 balls due to wind, and both were high fliers.... I got my club at Golf Galaxy by my house, and paid $150 for it. At this price, I has been the best purchase I have made for my game. For the price, It's a great club.
-
jajajaja Remember that golf is a game about confidence...you could be playing 1920's set of clubs, but if you are confident that you will play better, you will!!!!!
-
I think the V2 really depends on your ss, which has not been metioned yet. I recently was shopping for a shaft, and was ready to drop the Aldila NV 65 on my r7 CBG Max head, bcs i am facing a high launch angle (17* - 19/20*). My ss is about 94 once warmed up, I fitted very well to the Matrix Ozik XCon 6, but at $300 i opted for the NV65, which has very similar characteristics. I spoke with several club fitters in my area, and based on my stats, both agreed to have the NV65. AS I was getting ready to drop off my driver, the pros suggested the r7 Limited with the X-Con 5.5 $150, so I bought that instead of switching shafts...non the less, I think the NV should be a good shaft as well. The V2 felt flat to me...I tried for about 20 swings, and it wasn't for me. Granted I dont have 100+mph swing...just my opinion.
-
I'm not to be giving you advice based on HC, but IHO with your HC, I'd suggest to llok at your swing/setup. If you have recently starting launching high flyers, maybe you have done something to change your swing/setup/grip...etc. I would suspect that you would probably get better results with few video recorded lessons to pin point what you are doing. Just my 2 cents!
-
Well having been in your situation a few days ago, I can say that the UST V2 for me is not good. It felt very blah! Everthing I hit with it was a slice, not to mention that they were about 210 / 220 yards. I tried the new UST axis shaft on same nike head 5900 and I did not like it either. I had alot of slice with it too....the V2 wast stiff, and Axis was reg. Neither one of these drives got me aobve 235. I was on my way to get my r7 CBG Max reshafted with the NV65 which seemed to match my charactestics well. This was my second choice ($55 at golf galaxy). My first choice was the Matrix Ozik X-Con 6, but at $300 you can imagine how i did not jump at it. I ended buying the r7 Limited in my sig...I used it yesterday for the first time and I had the best fairway performace ever...8 out of 14 fairways, that was a record for me. Not to mention that I too live in South Florida where I had gusts of 25 mph, and average winds of 18 mph. Few slices due to bad setup and swings, and the hooks were due to wind! I was driving 250 / 260 consistently, something I had lost with my CBG Max. Shaft makes a big defference!!!!
-
Ok, so I bit the bullet!!!! I bought the r7 Limited. I ended getting the 9.5* with Reg shaft. I spent a god 45 minutes in the bay hitting balls, and after loosening up, I was posting these numers: Ss: 93 Avg BS: 136 Launch angle: 12* - 13.5*, a little low still, this is swing mechanics more than club Spin: got it down to 4300 or so, but the tech @ golf galaxy told me that is normal when you are hitting with tape...it adds an additional 500rpm, so it would end up being around 3700....I can live with that.... Distance traveled was about 225, but again, due to the extra spin of the tape, you add 10% extra distance.....about 23 yards for a total Avg of 250.... I can certainlylive with that. The best thing about this club is how well I can stay within 10 yards of center... Even my mishits were Petty good I'm looking forward to trying it out tomorrow....ill update later

Skycaddie or phone GPS
Crey23 replied to ElWagonne's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
All tha you hear is right...but if you are a blackberry power user, ie you tinker with system versions and applications, it absolutely rocks! I have a Blackberry 8900 running BBOS 5.0.411I can go the entire weekend with a charge, including a round of golf! I'm using Golf Logix application an it is very nice and accurate. I have found that most courses I play (munis) are way off on tee distances, but I'm within a 3 yards from markers. As for the battery issue, there are two things to consider, depending on your phone. (1) If you are using a blackberry, you must upgrade your system in order improve your battery life. (2) If you are running an iPhone...don't! All iPhones are drained from the use of the GPS, apparently there is nothing that has been done from an operating system patch to improve that, so if you have an iPhone keep the skycaddie. With said, the main reason that I play my phone gps versus a dedicated one is cost. I can pay $40 annual membership for my phone, and have all I need on the course with me in one device. I test drove several phone gps aps (Golf Logix, nRnage, Green Finder, Accel ...) and liked Golf Logix the best, not only from the interface, buyt it keeps stats of my game (while I'm playing) and syncs them to their page on the net. The downside, you can't export to other HC calculators such oobgolf or Scorecard 2.0. Since you already have the unit, and you still have to renew your membership, I would do that. I would on the other hand recommend to get a scorecard app for your phone such accel golf (free) or Golf Scorecard ($2.99). These are pretty good at keeping your stats and provididng nice summaries at the end of the round. I hope this helps.
