  1. What section of the store do you find these in?
  2. Just try and take it easy for a while, and ice them when they get worse. Be sure to stretch your calves thoroughly before and after your rounds/practice sessions. I had a problem with shin splints a few years ago, I once got a tip that while doing the "push the wall down" calf stretch (not sure what its called) you should angle your feet inwards so they're angled like / \. Seemed to help me. Good luck.
  3. LOL, I couldn't agree more
  4. The Rawls Course http://www.depts.ttu.edu/therawlscou...ml/course.html Designed by Tom Doak. Links style course, a little slice of Scotland here in West Texas 7207 yards (75.3/139)
  5. +1 He beat me to it. http://www.uskidsgolf.com/uskgProduc...nner&menuID;=29 I would advise against cutting down some of your old clubs, the clubheads are way too heavy and the shaft would be up near 4X-Super Stiff. With some clubs designed for him it will be much easier for him to pick up the game, which will make it more enjoyable as well. I can't wait until my nephew is old enough to go out with us. He got a fisher price "set" (one club) last christmas, but again he was only 20 months old at the time.
  6. The weeks not over yet but I don't think I'll top this. On the 12th Hole today I had 230 to the green with the wind blowing right in my face. Put a smooth swing on a 3 wood and left it 18 inches from the cup!
  7. Look for junior specials like others have said. Around here most courses have "Player Development Programs" where you pay a monthly fee (30-50 dollars) and you get unlimited range time and discounted greens fees. See if any of the courses/ranges near you have a similar deal.
  8. Where can I get one of these bent metal repair tools on the right? I had one for several years that I got for free from a golf course but its gone missing. I've looked around at local stores but haven't found them anywhere, and online I can only find them for sale in bulk (150+ per order)
  9. I don't care for PETA at all. Farmers that keep animals will generally try their best to take care of them because those animals=their product=their profits. If PETA succeeded in "liberating" all the cows and chickens in the United States you take away any incentive for farmers to take care them. For the majority of domesticated animals their "liberation" would be more like their death sentence since they would have next to no chance of surviving without human assistance. I mainly don't like PETA because of their stance on hunting. Animals kill other animals all the time, its silly to try and take the right to kill/eat animals away from people. If we stopped selling hunting/fishing licenses today the majority of the wildlife conservation budget would disappear. If PETA would spend its money on caring for the animals they adopt, and less on publicity stunts/protests they wouldn't have to euthanize more than four fifths of them each year. I don't buy that an animal would ever say anything worth listening to either. I would think it would be more of a commentary of what their doing at that moment. The only real thought would be while deciding if they should run when they hear/see/smell something. I wouldn't mind hearing a lion speak. It would go something like under its breath: "I can't wait for that zebra to take two more steps towards me so I can go tackle it and bite its throat 'til it doesn't try and stop me, my friends, and our kids from eating it." basically the same thing as a barbeque without the cooking and beer. I'm going to keep eating meat and doing my part for animals by paying the government to kill/catch them each year.
  10. I wouldn't say he's wrong. The PGA does only measure two holes per 18, but they only measure the distance. Mileydog's post was pointing out that those measurements aren't always for the players driver. A long hitter might hit his driver 300+ yards and could take 3 wood/Hybrid off the two holes they measure and average 275 yards in driving distance, but this wouldn't be an accurate estimate of how far they can actually hit their driver.
  11. Ernie Els Sean O'Hair
  12. When my swing goes downhill I'll go to the range and hit balls at quarter to half speed, its a lot easier for you to feel a swing flaw when you do it painfully slowly. Once your making solid contact slowly work your way back up to your normal swing speed.
  13. I just got airvue and it works great. I hit 6/9 greens my first using it.
  14. For me, my biggest problem is negative thinking/lack of confidence while over the ball. Especially on partial wedge shots. I let negative thinking creep into my head three times today, each time I thought about backing off but decided to hit the ball anyway and horrible shots resulted. My putting is also starting to hold me back (I missed two birdie putts today that were inside 10ft ) I'm getting way too caught up with the line on my 35+ footers and not lagging it close enough to the hole. Sad part is a month ago putting was the strongest part of my game. Time to hit the practice green/par 3 course for me.
  15. Check out Callaway Pre-Owned, they've got a few left handed Callaway Steelhead 4 woods. I have a Steelhead 5 and 7 wood and they're both great clubs that I would highly recommend. I'm thinking about ditching my 60* to get the 5 wood back in the bag. I'm pretty sure the Steelhead 5 wood is 17.5* so its more like a 5 wood head with more of a 4 wood loft. There are two left handed titleist 906 series fairway woods that are 18* and 18.5* on there as well right now. http://callawaygolfpreowned.com/wood...steelhead.aspx
  16. Be sure your keeping your hands from releasing through impact too much, try and finish with the clubface pointed more upwards than to the left of your target. Swing with a smooth rhythm and accelerate through the ball, even on the really short ones and they should check up more.
  17. I got a dozen of the tp reds with the conforming white "tournament edition" sticker for 27.50 at walmart last week. I liked them so much I got a dozen of the tp blacks to try out yesterday. Can't beat that price.
  18. Lessons would be best, but they are expensive. If you are serious about getting better quickly I would suggest saving for lessons. You have a good amount of time to practice, but it sounds like your spending most of your time working on the range and not enough time at the practice green. Try spending 30-45 minutes on/around the practice green for every hour you get to practice. Improving your shortgame is where you will see the most dramatic improvement of scores. I'm just starting to get back into golf and working from the green out has really helped my scores. Start with putting and chipping on the practice green, and work on that until your confident you can get up and down a good percentage of the time. This is what has really helped me score a lot better, if you know that when you get to within 10-20 yards from the green that you can get up and down it makes you a lot more confident on longer shots. Try and spend a good portion of your time on the range working on pitch shots of different distances from ~30-75 yards also. If you want to practice at home I would suggest working on your setup (grip, stance, posture) using a mirror to check your stance and posture. It makes it a lot easier to make a good swing if you have a good start. You also need to setup the same way on each shot if you want to have a chance of having a consistent ball flight. If you have a large enough yard you can also practice chipping at home, try and land the ball on a towel from different distances with different clubs. If you have carpet or a large rug you can even practice putting. If you want to work on your full swing at home work more on balance and tempo and not swing mechanics, just save that stuff for when your taking your lessons. Here's a thread that has some very helpful videos on fundamentals. http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21680 I'm in a very similar situation where I want to take some lessons but I don't have the money to play, practice, and take lessons. I've decided to put playing on hold until I take some lessons. This is basically what I've been working on and will keep working on until I start lessons. If I do play its going to be on a par 3 course that I can play for 7 dollars, but hopefully within the next month I'll have saved enough. Good luck and be sure to have fun out there.
  19. I hate slow play, I was stuck behind a terribly slow foursome yesterday that really threw off my game. I was waiting an average of 4-5 minutes on each tee, and approach shot. I was driving the ball beautifully and had a lot of sand wedges into greens, but I really wanted to catch them at the next tee box to try and initiate the "can I play through conversation" but in my haste I messed up most my approaches. Once they finally let me through after 8 holes of waiting I started hitting greens and parred the next 5 holes. The worst thing I've ever seen on a golf course though was back in high school. I was about 50-60 yards out preparing to hit a pitch shot into the green from the right rough. I see a golf cart drive past the no carts sign, onto the green and over the flagstick. (the flag stood back up but was damaged severely as was the hole) Me and my playing partner were dumbstruck. We saw what I assume was the same cart stuck in the mud under a bridge a few holes later.
  20. I like the Texas Open, its the only PGA event I've ever been able to attend. Now that I've looked at its history I like it even more, its actually got a great list of champions that include Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, and Arnold Palmer. I think its awesome that today I almost played on a course (Willow Springs GC) where Ben Hogan and Sam Snead won. Instead I played Woodlake GC where Ben Crenshaw got his first PGA tour win (1973 Texas Open) I really want to go play Willow Springs now, I'm gonna try and get out there thursday or friday. Back to the topic, I'm looking forward to watching this weekend since I've been able to play on La Cantera. Its cool to see the pros tear it up where I've hacked it around. I might go, I saw some tickets on craigslist for 12$ a piece. I'd really like to see AK play in person since I've watched his swing vision videos on youtube so much.
  21. It looks like some of the 983K's are nonconforming while most should still conform. Here's a photo that should help. http://www.usga.org/equipment/images/clubs/2003407.jpg
  22. For me at least, when I start struggling on the short ones its because my tempo is off. I tend to jerk it back too fast, which then makes it go back too far and I end up decelerating through the ball to try and compensate. For me to fix this I try to concentrate on making a short backstroke, with a really slow/smooth takeaway, then just accelerate through the ball.
  23. I agree its best to fix a swing flaw and hit it pure every time. However, he's a 5 handicap so I'd assume his swing is already quite solid. Since he didn't say he hits it with too much spin all the time, I think it would be smart to get a new lower spin driver that doesn't exaggerate his most common mishit, especially with the selection available today. No sense in using a club that takes your most common mistake and makes it worse.
  24. I have the same problem with my driver going way too high and landing with almost no roll, I'm pretty sure I hit it higher than my 3 wood sometimes. I've been looking for a low spin driver for a while now, check out the Titleist 905S. Its a little smaller than your current driver at 400cc, but still plenty big IMHO. http://www.titleist.com/historical_c...ails.asp?id=96 I haven't gotten a chance to hit one yet, but it sounds like it should work. I've been searching locally for a used one without much luck. I'm thinking about just getting one off ebay to try out.
  25. So its been a few years since I took golf seriously, but now I'm trying to start back up. I've been reading on this forum a lot lately while hitting the range over the past few weeks, and finally was able to play my first round since last august this morning (shot an 88! with one drive in the water and one OB) I was happy with how I struck the ball today (9 GIR, could have had 1-2 more but I left my replacement 7i at home by accident) and chipped/pitched pretty well around the greens. The greens were in bad shape (they'd recently been aerated and covered with sand ) and my putting really suffered (35 putts 3 one putts, 2 three putts) I hit my driver well on the front, it had good distance and I hit 3/5 fairways with it, on the back 9 I still made solid contact and had good distance but I didn't hit a single fairway with it. I tried hitting my 3 wood but I did worse with it than I did with the driver. The result was I was scrambling a lot and had to hit from the trees a few times on the back. Since I haven't bought any new equipment in 8-9 years I was planning on getting some new wedges first (probably 52*, and 58*) and then adding a hybrid or two and replacing my lost 7i or picking up a used iron set and eventually a new driver. I still plan on getting new wedges first but I'm beginning to think I might want to get a new driver (and maybe a new 3 wood) sooner than later to help me off the tee. Also how easy is it to hit low punch shots with hybrids? since I had to do that a few times today I don't want to take that shot out of my bag until I'm out in the fairway. I went to edwin watts last week and got some new footjoys and I tried to go look at drivers but really didn't know where to start (they all looked huge, my current driver is 260cc) Other than the wedges I plan on getting the rest of the equipment used either at local stores or on ebay. What are some high quality drivers/fairway woods that are affordable (
