I'm no expert or instructor, I found this video which jives with some instruction I've been getting. I checked my swing videos from as far back as I can find and I've been doing this wrong my entire career and never knew. Perhaps it'll help you also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0qzqJ0-4q4

I've been struggling with an outside-in swing path for years which sometimes causes slicing, but over time I've manipulated my club face enough to where it's usually just a straight pull or a gentle fade. I've tried a few things but I always seem to revert back to my outside-in swing. I found this video on YouTube that looks perfect for me. The question is, is this good advice? I've been told from a young age to start the downswing with the lower part of my body, but I haven't been focusing on this recently. I've done a few practice swings after watching this video and it feels pretty good, but I know my timing is going to be off unless I work on this for a few weeks. Before doing that, I need some confirmation that this is what I should be doing.

Goodbye Fairway Woods, Hello Hybrids......
golfaddiction replied to Bullitt5339's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I used to be quite fond of my 5 wood, but after months and months of shanking it, I finally replaced it with a 4 hybrid. Both go the same distance, a bit over 200 yards. Should have done it years ago. I still carry a 3 wood but unless I'm looking to hit a green more than 220 yards away, I usually hit my 2 hybrid which is much less erratic. -
Anyone else in the northern climes frustrated with this weather?
golfaddiction replied to walk18's topic in Golf Talk
50s this weekend in NY. Might have to play Sat and Sun to make up for lost time. Already got my Sat tee time. -
I was just playing around with the Swing by Swing app on my phone and if you zoom to a certain area and search blank it will pop up all courses it knows (which is very nearly all of them). Very useful.

Off the top if my head I would guess you're hitting too many drivers off the tee when a hybrid or iron might be a better choice in some cases

36+ handicapper ball
golfaddiction replied to cwaldo5252's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I second the e6 for beginners. They sell bags of them used on Amazon. -
I spend about the same each year but I'm comfortable enough with my finances to know I can afford it. I actually think I should spend more to play better, less crowded courses and increase my enjoyment. And the past few years I've taken really nice golf trips with friends ($800-1000) that I can hope to do more of.

I tried a dozen or so putters a few years ago and walked out with an Odyssey Rossie. Wasn't expecting to at all but it felt the best to me. Been putting well (for me at least) ever since. Also, even though I'm 6'2 it's relatively short at 34 inches cause my stance is fairly hunched over. Definitely pay attention to lengths.

Thanks, I'm playing around with Google searching "golf course" on the map and it's listing pretty much everything in the area, including some ranges and instruction facilities. Will still have to cross-check whether I can actually play the course, but at least I'll have all the options.

I screwed up a bunch of shots around the green last time out. After the round, I realized that I was focusing too much on making a perfect shot (and tapping in), rather than focusing on execution. I would be much better served focusing on the feel of the shot and keeping my weight forward than trying to land it perfectly and have it roll perfectly toward the hole.

Anyone else in the northern climes frustrated with this weather?
golfaddiction replied to walk18's topic in Golf Talk
SUCKS! Here in NY, there have only been been 4 days over 50 degrees in all of February and March combined. I was out on the course for one of them, but usually I've played 3 or 4 times by now. On the plus side, I treated myself to a new RBZ driver with the money I've saved on greens fees by not playing. -
Every hole is a strategic decision. If I want chance at par on a 400+ yard par 4, I will hit the driver. If I'm looking at a 320-380 yard hole, I'll pick the club that puts me in the best position for my 2nd shot. Just because you are carrying a driver doesn't mean you have to use it on every tee.

Does anyone have a link to a map with all public, semi-private, and private courses? Weather.com used to have it, and while they still have the data (you can get weather outlooks for each course ) it looks like they took away the map itself. You can get map at GolfNow.com, but that's only for courses that participate. GolfLink.com has pretty much every course, but I don't see any way to map them. This would be really helpful when deciding where to play each weekend depending on where I'm at.

Going back to the original question (sorry I didn't read all 18 pages of posts), when I smoke the night before I play I usually do terribly. But this is because I have trouble sleeping after I smoke, and lack of sleep definitely affects the golf game the next day. I've also ruined a pretty solid round when someone offered me a drag during the round, so I don't do that anymore.

Music on the Course - When Did This Become a Thing?
golfaddiction replied to wedge player's topic in Golf Talk
You know this is an interesting question. I listen to music all day while I work, so I'm definitely used to listening in the background and while staying focused. I don't listen to music when I play or practice, but I ALWAYS have some stupid song stuck in my head on the course. Maybe if I could pick a few songs to practice with, then get those stuck in my head during a round, I'll have an easier time concentrating. And I won't risk having some pop song in my head ruining everything. -
I don't have a 60 degree but love my 58, also an SV Tour. I use it on just about every shot out to 50 yards, then switch to my 54 degree for 3/4 to full shots. I always tell beginners they should have at least a 56 degree wedge, but ideally 58 or 60. The high loft wedge has to be the most valuable club in the bag.

I haven't had a lesson in a number of years, but have definitely considered taking some. My worry is that the instructor would try to change too many things and make me uncomfortable. I guess that's the point though, but still I'd only go to an instructor who would work with my current swing rather than try to get me doing something completely different. I know there are a lot of bad instructors out there as well, so I worry that I'd get started down the wrong path. Someone suggested a social media presence to market yourself, which is a good idea. I would definitely Google my instructor, probably before starting lessons, to make sure I wasn't wasting my time.

Yeah there's not much you can do except find another course or play later in the day (2pm should do it) or earlier in the morning (before 8 am). You just have to expect a slow round and be pleasantly surprised if it's not. I was recently at a course with very aggressive marshalls who were also totally misguided. I was waiting for the green to clear before trying to hit my 3 wood 230 yards and he was in my face questioning my decision. Of course I had been waiting to hit EVERY shot so far that day, so I was going to catch up anyway on the next hole. Meanwhile, a group a few holes ahead had fallen an entire hole behind.

Do I hurt myself by playing these courses?
golfaddiction replied to Chris Stewart's topic in Golf Talk
To follow up, you're not necessarily hurting yourself by playing easier courses. You'll just be faced with new and different shots on tougher courses, such as swinging on steeper sloped ground, hitting from thicker rough, or putting on lightning fast greens. You can't expect to hit these shots well if you haven't seen them before. -
Do I hurt myself by playing these courses?
golfaddiction replied to Chris Stewart's topic in Golf Talk
I can only imagine the course you play is pretty flat (could be wrong). The biggest difference at harder courses, I find, is that the ball is above or below your feet on almost every shot. These shots are dumbfounding if you aren't used to them. -
After slicing two balls into the right side lake on hole 13 Saturday, I spent some time on the range. What finally worked to fix my slice was thinking about swinging in a circle on which impact happens from the inside (see rudimentary top-down diagram below). The green, inside-out circle is centered closer to my left side, approximately where my hands begin. To achieve the green circle, I really need to turn my hips and stay over the ball, rather than swaying back. Unfortunately, the red, outside-in circle seems to be ingrained in my swing. I have a habit of swaying and not fully turning my hips. I need a lot more time to get used to the new swing path. I hit plenty of really nice, powerful draws, but also some push-fades and some hooks. Timing the clubhead release is a much different when hitting from this new path.

What Does the Average Weekend Golfer Shoot?
golfaddiction replied to SLeDHeaDDude800's topic in Golf Talk
I would recommend reading about course management and the mental side of the game. Breaking 90 is all about playing for bogeys and eliminating the blow up holes. Playing safer shots that leave you in good position is the only way to do this. That and working on your short game. Last round I shot 89 and only hit 2 greens in regulation. I was able to get up and down in 2 or 3 on 14 holes. -
I feel imbalanced with all the weight on my left wrist, so I take off my watch.

Shaking Hands With Your Foursome / Removing Your Hat on 18th Green?
golfaddiction replied to bigoak's topic in Golf Talk
I've never considered removing my hat. This is a classy move though; I will incorporate it into my post-round salutations.
