I've got a Sun Mountain Four 5. Really great bag for walking. Really crappy bag for being thrown on a cart. I thought I wouldn't mind the roller bottom / leg actuator and how it sticks out further than the actual bottom of the bag, but when placed in a cart its a super pain in the butt. Makes it almost impossible to fit the bag into the back of a cart if your riding partner has a cart or staff bag.

Best Clubs for a bogey golfer trying to get to a 5
Keg0brew replied to ZepZe7en's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Clubs are irrelevant. Your mental game and physical swing are what separates scratch golfers from 20 handicaps. I could go out and shoot within 3 shots of my average with any set of clubs sold today. I wont shoot lights out though. The reason, my short game. It will still suck no matter what clubs I use. -
The whole thing was slanted against iPhone apps.

nike to claim golf ball market
Keg0brew replied to kevinbomb123's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
Nike Tours and Tour D's are $29.99 a dozen right now here in north Texas, FWIW. Picked up a box of Tours just last week myself. -
GolfShot with GPS is greatness. I personlly just went through a similar connundrum. I ended up spending the money to upgrade to an iPhone and buy GolfShot instead of getting a dedicated golf GPS. Golfshot is usually within 1 yard of the markers on the course. For me, much more useful to have an iphone and app instead of golf only gps.

No and none.

If you push right (vs slice right) then a toe balanced putter will help with that problem.

Why don't you just do a full fitting at the place where you want to buy the clubs? They are generally free if you buy clubs at the place you have it done. Once you know your specs, you will know for sure if you need graphite or steel, high or low kick point, xtra stiff or regular shafts, oversized or regular grips, upright or flat lie angle, etc... Then once you know all that, you will be armed with the info needed to narrow down all the choices to a select few, hit them, and decide from there

Any reviews of Putters under $100 ?
Keg0brew replied to erock9174's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Not sure on the review part, but I can say that in my experience, this is the best sub $100 putter I have ever used. Mizuno Bettinardi BC1 - $99 -
Is it Worth it to Buy a Ball Retriever?
Keg0brew replied to Uncle Peter's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
I carry one. I'm not embarrassed to hit balls I find on course. In fact, I buy probably one box of balls a year for use in 2-3 tournaments a year. All the balls I play with on a regular basis are ones I find on course. Having one also gives you something to do when you are waiting on the group in front of you. -
Not from me. I'm one of those who can see whats wrong, but have no idea on a good way to fix it. I'd just screw you up worse if I tried.

I can see the videos now. Way, way, way, way, way too flat.

overpowering the course not the best way to go?
Keg0brew replied to imtomtomim's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
IMHO, this brings up one of the biggest areas of improvement for 99% of golfers and yet one that relatively few people discuss....course management. For me personally, I never play a shot based on yardage remaining, I always play instead based on margin for error. Its a different way to play a course than many amateurs are used to, but it saves strokes from day one....even for those who are not very good at half swing shots. I always play for a miss. Where do I want my ball to end up worst case? I always aim for the fat part of the fairway and fat part of the green. I don't short side myself. Sure, I make less birdies and eagles than peers of the same ability, but I make far less bogies and higher. I score better, because I take the blowup hole out of the equation. Once I moved to this strategy, I dropped by handicap by 4-5 shots. I basically took 2 blow-up holes that would have been double bogeys or worse, out of play and guaranteed myself no worse than bogey on every hole. -
Can't help you with swing changes/ideas, but do have a thought on your tee troubles. I used to have a hell of an inconsistent time with my tee ball also. I'd push one out right, hook the next, slice the third, so on... After weeks of trial and error, I determined that an easy fix, FOR ME, was to change my tee height. I used to tee the ball high, half the ball above a 460cc head at a minimum, with most shots at about 3/4 of the ball above the tee. After moving back down to about only 1/4 of the ball above the head, I found pure consistency. I'm back to hitting 70% of fairways now. I'm not sure how much much my swing has changed from before to now, and what impact that has had on my new found consistency, but either way, if you tee it high currently, its worth a shot at teeing it low to see what happens.

playing without a glove
Keg0brew replied to clearwaterms's topic in Balls, Carts/Bags, Apparel, Gear, Etc.
No glove for me. I have sweaty hands, but still prefer no glove. Gloves just make my sweaty stinky hands worse. -
You going to do it yourself of have someone else do it? Most places charge like $20 per club for labor. Then you pay for the shaft and grip separately. I've re-shafted my own clubs multiple times, and if you are handy, I'd recommend doing it yourself. Its really pretty easy with the right equipment. Getting the head off the old shaft is the hardest part, but its easy with the correct torch.

Regripping, how much does it cost?
Keg0brew replied to Philip9210's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Agreed. And, FWIW, didnt mean that to come off as calling you out specifically, if it did. Just re-read what I wrote and comming right after your post, it looked like I was calling you out. -
Regripping, how much does it cost?
Keg0brew replied to Philip9210's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
IMHO....do it yourself! In the long run its way, way cheaper. You don't need any vises or special equipment to do it, (contrary to what some on here say) and it doesn't take but less than 5 minutes a club. All you need is the new grips, a razor blade of some sort (I use a retractable box cutter), some double sided tape, and some sort of solvent that evaporates quickly (I use lighter fluid most of the time since that is what I always lying around the house, but you can buy "grip solvent" or use other similar solvents). I just regripped my 3I at home last night, in my living room, while watching TV, and it took 2 minutes and 10 seconds, from start to finish. Its soooo easy to do. Just start with clubs with a metal shaft first (so you can practice and not have to worry about scratching the shaft like you do with graphite) and after you do two or three of them, you'll have the hang of it. -
FYI, I just picked up a Mizuno/Bettinardi BC1 @ Golfsmith for $99. IMHO, a dang good deal for a real nice putter.

Anyone *not* bag any fairway woods?
Keg0brew replied to amcquay's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Count me firmly in the in-between group. I absolutely crush my 3W, about 270y and straight as an arrow, off the tee, but cant hit it straight for snot off the ground. Off the ground, I'm 50/50 at best at keeping the ball in play. I actually hit my 3W off the tee so well and so deep, I really have no use for a driver other than for those extra 30 yards or so on some longer holes. On the other hand, I've tried to get into hybrids, but i just can't do it. I can not hit the dang things for some reason. I can't hit them constantly off the tee or the ground. I duck hook the snot out of them about half the time. Thus, I rotate my clubs around every time I play trying to get something I like put together and/or based on the course. Sometimes its no driver, but 3W and 3H. Sometimes Driver and 3W, sometimes Driver and 2H, etc... So far, no consistent combination other than 3W off the tee and no hybrids...which feel like a waste to me because that means if I am outside of 210y (3-iron distance for me) I can't reach the green consistently which sucks. -
How old are your clubs? (and related thoughts)
Keg0brew replied to treebound's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
Up until recently, most of my clubs were well over 10 years old. I played with a set of original King Cobra irons from 1994 up until a short time ago when I upgraded to a set of used MP-32's. I'll generally get new wedges, putters, or drivers every 5 or 6 years just because I feel those are the clubs where I stand to gain the most from a new club. I typically upgrade drivers when feel I will get significantly more forgiveness and wedges when the grooves are wore out. I upgrade putters when I lose feel for the one I currently have. -
I need to fill a hole in my yardages, and am not sure if I should try a hybrid, 5 wood, or 2 iron first. Currently, I have a Callaway Great Big Bertha 3 Wood (15 degree) that I hit about 260 off the tee and 240 or so off the turf. My next club down is my 3 iron (22 degree), that I hit about 200 both off the tee and off the turf. On the courses I play, I really need something I can hit about 220 - 230 off the tee and 220 off the turf. I'll be using it to tee off on about 6/18 holes on each course and maybe 2 - 3 times off the turf (mostly as second shots on par 5's). Ability to shape the shots is not a concern, (most shots will be straight) but ability to hit consistently straight will be. For this reason, I am leaning towards the 5 wood, but welcome all other thoughts. I hear that the Tour Edge Geomax hybrids are bigger like a fairway wood, so I'm also considering that. I plan to try for a few rounds and exchange if necessary, but obviously would like to get it right the first time. (FWIW, I can not find a 2 iron that matches my set, so it would be a newer club or any brand really)
