  1. Sorry if my post came off as elitist or something similar. After reading it myself, I could see how it could be taken wrong. What I was trying to describe is a good course, one that goes out of their way to make it a good round for everyone while teaching you how to ensure everyone else enjoys the day. Getting a divot repair tool and lesson on how to repair divots is a bad thing? Being reminded on what ready golf is and why it's important is a bad thing? Being reminded what tees you should play from based on your ability is a bad thing? The point is that management at a course has a responsibility to ensure all players enjoy their day, since they all paid. With some guidance, friendly reminders, and tactful enforcement, they can pull this off.
  2. My buddy and I recognize that your scenario doesn't work and we adjust this way- if he normally shoots 10 strokes better than me, I get 5 strokes when playing skins. No real logic in this, but it seems to work.
  3. Interesting conversation. I agree completely that it's pace of play. Our government sets laws because the population refuses to govern themselves. People are dumb and/or ignorant and need rules. Sorry, that's the way it is. Courses must govern, but can also teach. It comes down to course management. I've been fortunate to play numerous courses that understand this. Starts when you check in and pay- they hand you a short list of rules and course etiquette, as well as a divot repair tool. Starter then talks to the group. Any questions on the rules? Here's how you repair a divot. We expect you to play ready golf, here's what that means. What is your handicap? OK, you WILL be playing from the whites. Don't lose sight of the group in front of you. Marshals will be on the course and help govern, if you fall back you will be expected to skip a hole. Everyone understand? Have a great day. GPS on the cart is another way a course speeds pace of play. Ever play with that guy that finds a marker before every shot and paces off 18 yards to figure out he's at 105? We all have. GPS helps avoid that. And forecaddies are the ultimate insurance that pace of play is maintained. A good course knows it's in their best interest to put the effort forward. There are courses that don't want to make the effort, they just want to take the money and shove people out on the course. These courses are usually cheaper, so it's really your decision in the end if you want to play them.
  4. I think this makes a lot of sense. It's something that probably happens a lot with poor golfers (like myself). I can clearly understand the right arm holding back the force of the swing and causing a leak of power or mishit.
  5. This argument occurs when discussing numerous "activities." I have always held the position that to qualify as a sport, the actions of your opponent must directly affect the game itself. Clear examples of sport include baseball, football, basketball, soccer, wrestling, etc. Action and reaction between opponents. Golf doesn't meet this criteria. Neither does most track & field events and most races. I consider those activities games or competitions. But not sport. Just me, who cares in the end.
  6. For those flying wedge drills, is it important to have a very open stance like they have?
  7. Recently completed my bag with two Vokeys - 54 and 58. Had never owned a "good" wedge before now, really love them.
  8. Quite possibly the easiest and best single exercise you can do. There is a reason athletes, military, and law enforcement have been doing them forever. I suggest three sets each time you work out. Start at 10, move to 12 a week later, etc, etc. I do three sets of 35 each day. Pretty week, considering I used to pump out 100 in two minutes with minimal effort. But at 36, I'm getting old and lazy.
  9. I think your swing is fine, but your eyesight needs some help.
  10. No comment on your problem, but you win a prize for that last post. While others are posting pictures with twelve different lines drawn on them, all different colors... you throw up your swing with a chicken wing on it. Love it!
  11. Very cool. I wish him well and hope he sees it through. Not sure if he'll make it to the pro ranks, but it's a very interesting experiment.
  12. Common theme here... they still manage to save the hole, with a par or bogey. Really the same as the pros. They miss (maybe not a duff) badly, but grind it out for par often.
  13. Your opinion. I love the course, its far from a novelty. And crude is the last word I'd use to describe it. Come play Amen Corner or the island green at TPC, my treat. Tell me how it feels when you're done.
  14. I'll be honest... never heard of him before this weekend.
  15. It's a hole in one with a mulligan, no more, no less. Be proud, enjoy it, and recognize the agony of it not being an honest hole in one. I would laugh about it more than anything.
  16. I agree on the bad conditions a few years ago. That was my initial impression. But over the past two years, the course conditions have been fantastic. And this year, new management has come in. I would give it a go once more and see if your opinion changes. I absolutely love it, and being 3 miles from my house makes it even better.
  17. Pitching wedge is strong at 45. Gap wedge is 50. Just picked up a 54 and 58. 54 is the most used club.
  18. Please Tiger, please. Make it close on Saturday, and then crush that 21 yr old that stated no one is afraid of you anymore. Amen.
  19. Glad to hear others can do the same. It's really amazing... walking out to your ball at the start of amen corner, looking downhill at the scoreboard, water, and green, and glancing right at the bridges and par 3 you're going to battle on the next hole.
  20. I'm a member here... http://www.renditionsgolf.com 18 holes modeled after some of the most famous in the world. My favorite stretch is Amen Corner, which is amazingly close to the real thing (at least from watching on TV). Just curious, any other courses out there like this? Anyone playing alongside the pros this weekend? I tee off tomorrow morning and can't wait for the Master's weekend celebration- all employees in period clothing, 1st tee announcements, and a ton of other goofy, fun stuff.
  21. Windows and Firefox over a T-1 line at work. No problems with the leaderboard and live video feeds, although when I would open a feed and watch for awhile, my computer's fans would kick into high gear and it got to the point that I thought a plane was taking off from my desk!
  22. I cringe thinking of this weekend's winner donning the green jacket while wearing shorts. Yeah, that would be an iconic symbol. Sorry, I think they should keep the pants, they earn the big bucks. I'll continue to wear shorts.
  23. Played last night and spent awhile focusing on this topic. Not sure if it just took my mind off other things, but most shots were crisp. Thanks to the OP.
  24. Exercise and shed some pounds. I was in no way fat, but the last several years I didn't regularly exercise. I always joked that a round of golf should only be 15 holes, as that was when I got tired. I felt it with other activities as well. I had enough this year. Since the holidays, I've worked out 5-6 days a week and dropped 12 pounds so far. I feel a thousand times better. I've only played two rounds this year, but I never felt tired and was ready for another 18 when done. The exercise is definitely paying off for golf and other activities.
