To the OP, you say last three fingers of the top hand, and then first three fingers. Which is it?

Tiger made the sport more popular. As such, young "athletes" started to look at golf and not just football, baseball, etc. So sure, maybe that has had an affect on the game and the type of young players we are seeing. Tiger and others have also shown that physical fitness and weight training does apply to golf, and can possibly make you a better player. The young "golfers" see this and now include traditional workouts as part of their training regimen.

Honestly? A tee shot landing 20 yards behind me is too close. The guy sounds like an *ss, but you should have waited until he completely cleared.

Congrats and wish you well. But how the hell do you dislocate your knee hitting a golf ball?

I used to be a sub 90 golfer, and hope this year gets me back to that range. For me, it was eliminating all penalty strokes (OB, water, lost balls) and focusing on bogey golf. Never even think of par. On a par 4, you have 3 shots to get it close to the pin. Bad drive? No big deal, focus on two decent shots. Good drive followed by a 20 yrd duff? Again, no biggie, you got another shot to hit the green. Once on the green, focus on getting that first putt close. Picture that 15" hole discussed in another thread, don't worry about draining that 40 footer. Get it in that range and then tap out for a bogey. Too many people (myself included) hit a poor, short drive and then pick up the 3-wood or 4-iron to try and make up for it on the next shot. Terrible strategy if you ask me. Play as described above and you'll start hitting bogey after bogey. And when you get in a groove and string together a couple of good shots, you'll pick up a par here and there. Good luck-

Is there a 5th Power Accumulator?
mattttt25 replied to david_wedzik's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
While I think it impacts a swing (what doesn't), I'm having a hard time considering it a separate PA. I can't see how it's not simply a result of #2 and #3, if your grip doesn't change during the swing. Sitting here in my office with a club, I can't not bend my right wrist when executing #2 and #3. And proposed #5 (that's my term) is absolutely related to #2 and #3 and how severe each is executed.- 58 replies

Did Tiger's 6-under on Sunday mean anything? He can obviously play with the best day to day, but hasn't been able to put a 4-day run together. Looked and felt like the old Tiger yesterday, could we see a win in the near future?

My cousin was married and I've taken advantage of the one year rule with wedding gifts. With summer approaching, I want to buy him a new set of irons. He is very new to the game, but has been out to the range and course several times. His occupation is professional and as such, he will often find himself playing with clients, etc. I don't know if he'll ever get serious about the game, but I see him playing 5-10 times a year. Suggestion on decent GI iron set that would cost me $300-350? I want to go new, but can be late model. He is 6' 2", so it has to be something that I can order with longer shafts. Thanks-

1-3: Missed it. If you're struggling to figure this out, focus on your next shot. Is it from the fairway? If not, you didn't hit it. 4: Score. 5: Flip a coin? Seriously, ask a partner to make the decision if you can't.

HELP !! Hitting it fat with my irons consistently ...
mattttt25 replied to inthehole's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
You've gotten great advice. Only thing I'll add is if you're hitting off mats at the range, you're probably hitting fat there as well. -
Mats can definitely cover up mistakes. A very fat shot can actually travel well and look nice. But what I recently learned is that you don't need to fool yourself. We all should know a good shot vs. bad shot from a mat. Hitting the ball first, you won't hear that big thump that comes from hitting the mat. And most mats leave their mark on your clubs. If the entire bottom of the club is green, you're hitting poorly. If just the leading edge is green and it even extends slightly to the face, you're probably hitting well. We should all be allowed to hit from grass, but I just don't think hitting from mats is a good excuse for playing poorly. I should post pictures from my last range session. The entire bottom of my clubs were green. My buddy was hitting next to me and is a much, much better player. He had a little green at the leading edge and it extended slightly to the face. He makes pure contact with the ball almost every swing. As I worked on keeping my weight forward (first session after reading the SnT book) I began to actually hit the ball first. Amazing how different it sounds from the mats.

While I don't think I would ever ask to him someone's club (unless they were a friend), I would have no problem allowing someone to hit mine ad would probably offer if the conversation came up. If someone offered their club, I would have no problem hitting it. I'd probably decline, since I know I'm not gaining anything by swinging it once. I just haven't seen that many catastrophic events occur when someone hits a golf ball. Make a mark on my club? Who cares, it happens.

Mizuno JPX-800...Anyone have them?
mattttt25 replied to DannyB215's topic in Clubs, Grips, Shafts, Fitting
I purchased the Pros w/ Dynalite R shaft at the end of last year. Love the look and feel. These fall into the game improvement category for Mizuno, and I don't think they are overly difficult to hit. -

These guys are good. -
I have struggled with this problem, even though my instruction (all the Leadbetter books) warned against it. I've just started filming my swing and it's an invaluable tool. No better way to see your faults. But I agree, you can't set yourself in the perfect contact position and then focus solely on trying to get to that position. For me, I stop hitting through the ball and my swing becomes nothing close to fluid.
-
Well, I just bought the book and am about half way through it. I don't think it's well written, but that's for another conversation. I do find myself buying into the method and ideas. I haven't even picked up a club yet, but sitting and reading, I can already picture myself executing my current swing and realizing why I have so many problems. My weight is all wrong, my shoulder turn is a mess, all leading to bad head movement. I use to keep my hands deep, but I was told my back swing was too flat. Instead of adjusting my wrists, I forced myself to lift my arms higher, pulling them away from my body. Yup, another big mistake. I really look forward to giving this a shot.

I usually turn to my partner and say, "Suck it." He usually responds with, "F off." But we give each other sh*t all the time and enjoy it.
-
It's always going to be subjective based on your personal level as well as the type of players you often play with or encounter on the course. I think a good player is anyone that breaks 90 on a consistent basis following the rules of golf. They are certainly in the minority, so I think that justifies the tag of good.

How do I pick a teaching pro?
mattttt25 replied to jetsknicks1's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'm in the same boat. Word of mouth seems to be the best advice. -
Yes and no as well. I think greens and fairway condition can affect your game, both directly and indirectly (mental aspect). A putt that doesn't follow the intended line because of terrible greens obviously affects scoring. And for me, a fairway that is rock hard with dying turf is tough to play in (mostly because I don't hit the ball first that often). With that said, how YOU are playing that day will affect scoring much more than the condition of the course.

$500 a year? Go for it. I'm trying to decide if $4,200 a year at my local course is worth it.....

Every course I play is between $75-120 a round, dependent on week/weekend.
