Hi Pace Looks like you are not doing too bad, moving the ball well anyway :) Just a few little tips on you journey creating a swing. A swing is a sequence of events starting as soon as you address the ball . Some times when we look at a swing we notice faults, and in turn try to fix them. But as hard as we try to fix them the solution seems elusive. That is because the fault is part a chain reaction and it's a previous part of the chain that is the problem. That's why pros and teaching pros always talk about the fundamentals, because if the fundamentals are right everything else just seems to slip into place a little more easily. I think if you look at your number 2 fundamental (after the grip) you will go a long towards improving you swing. The number 2 fundamental is setup, when you address the ball you just don't get enough of an inclination to the ball. You stand too close and then have to stand far too up right. From this position your body dose not have enough room to rotate in the back swing and hence the movement. Stand back some, stick you backside out. Sounds simple but it's pretty hard to get used to after swinging up right for too long (had to fix this fault myself), but I gauerntee you it will get you swinging a bit better. Also don't worry about getting the power, it's the last part in the chain. You get all the bits right that come first and the power will come .. :)

Changes to Handicapping system - Australia, your thoughts
mobosecomin replied to noefi13b's topic in Golf Talk
Its the same with the system in Ireland, when players from the US come over. Their is quite a gap between handicaps to be honest and often comes a quite a shock for local players when the end up out with a 10 thats an 16 in our system and vice versa. Its not that the US system is flawed or anything its just different. -
This is my fave tip. Think it's extreemly useful

I have a severe lack of respect or anything for that matter for people who don't realize the the world is in a severe economic recession ...!! Darren had a lot of his money invested into development and property this side of the pond and some F***ing wankbag white collar dicks in the US were trading sub prime waiting for the inevitable bubble to burst and run. Hence Darren broke, golf courses closing, hence unemployment rife and all my golfing buddys emigrating. Sorry for the rant I appreciate you did not mean it like I took it up but the whole world has money problems not just Darren..!

Hi I'v been trying to get my G15 re-shafted recently with no luck. Local club maker is a bit of an amateurish operation. He said he was having trouble getting a shaft that fits so he fitted a tfc100 Ping shaft as a quick fix. As it turns out that shaft was terrible and on a closer inspection turn out the shaft had some hairline cracks in it too. It's a bit of a nightmare situation. This has led me to thinking of going the DIY route. I'v looked up the methods for fitting shafts and it dose not look to bad but I'm a bit unsure what exactly I need so I was hoping maybe some of ye guys could confirm I'm getting the right stuff. I'm probably going to end up using .335 tip shaft even though the G15 is a .350 so I was wondering if this adapter is the right one for the job. http://www.gamolagolf.co.uk/acatalog/PING_.335_Adaptor.html So with this and a properly prepared hosel and shaft it should just be a simple assembly operation yeah ? I'm going to use shafting beads also just to try and help get the best fit. Any help would be appreciated. And just as a first timer any tips that anyone would have from experience would be great.

Flipping at Impact Master Thread
mobosecomin replied to TTJR's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I don't know if this video is completely relevant here but I do feel it is a good move for flippers to try to emulate. I really like this tip I think it has helped me greatly with my ball striking. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dB92puVNHo -
Their is no right or wrong way to chip/pitch since their are so many different approaches to it. I'm not 100% on this as I have not been able to afford the 500£ lesson from Mark Roe but as far as I gather he someone who dose not advocate wrist hinge. And he has worked with quite a few players. Mark has and is currently working with Lee Westwood, Nick Dougherty, Paul McGinley, Soren Hansen, Marcel Siem, Ross McGowan, Marc Warren, Ross Fisher, Darren Clarke, Thomas Bjorn, Steve Webster, Richard Finch and others. I think its definitely a case of what works for you.

Ball flight laws vs Tips published in magazines
mobosecomin replied to mobosecomin's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
Yup your spot on their Iacas. But whatever about professionals understanding the ball flight laws, they do have lots of experience and feel on their side. But amateurs like myself and others I think it's very important for us to understand them. I can't understand why this is not one of the fundamentals thought to every golfer. I was also wondering what impact you think they have on off-set, closed drivers and draw biased weighted drivers. Dose it almost make them a futile pursuit..? Also just like to add about instruction in magazines. One mag recently had Hunter Mahan explaining how he draws the ball with swing-path which is correct. Only later in the mag to have Paul Mcginley in an article similar to the one above. Amazing TBH -
I could actually start a thread about the pitfalls of being self thought, but I am persisting myself so I am in no position to say anything to you newbgolfer. One thing I would say at the outset is to make sure you have a mirror to see what you are going or else video your swing. I have become more and more aware of this as my own golfing journey has progressed. As it turns out you are never doing what you think you are doing. What feels like and what actually is are two different things in a golf swing. Another thing is advice and learning sources. A huge amount of what is said or thought is almost contradictory or even misleading at best. A few quick ones that spring to mind are "Keep your head down" - you never keep your head down you actually keep it up! With your chin well above your chest so your shoulders can rotate. "Head over the ball" - your head is never over the ball its actually meant to be behind it. "Release the club" - you don't actually release the club until the ball is gone. If you take this saying up wrong you end up casting the club coming out of the shot. Anyway just to continue my amateur advice. A proper grip is a must. Neutral grip. Do not make compensations in your grip if you can at all. One thing that you can easily make sure is perfect is your setup. look this up. find a pro you like and copy his setup. You can do this easily with a mirror. (Thats what I have been working on the last few weeks and its really helped a lot.) Next thing I would do is try to get the club on plane. the thing that really helped me get the club on plane was the keep the club in front of you concept. This involved me having the feeling of the right elbow being in front of me through the swing. Different feelings might work for you but if you have a mirror handy you can make dry run swings and check it out for yourself. Next thing would be to look up the Hip Slide thread. I have been working hard for the past few months and starting out this season my swing was extreemly similar to yours. I have made good progress this years with my scores starting to improve and my ball striking as good as it has ever been. The biggest thing I had to learn was their are no such thing as quick fixes. The old "fix your slice now" or "never hook again" or gain 10 yards now" tips.. they don't work. Poppycock.. The only way improve your golf swing is to start with a basics and learn to do that properly, then move on to the next basic and learn to do that properly, eventually on to the more advanced stuff. At every stage you have to monitor yourself to make sure you are doing it properly and not just thinking you are doing it properly! A word of warning I am a self thought hacker but I really thought I might help with some of the bits and pieces of logic I picked up along the way. Best of Luck

I could have posted this for what it's worth. It's really been flaring up recently. In the morning it almost feels as if my fingers are locked up. I was fearing arthritis or something similar. They are usually ok after I hit a few balls in the morning. That said i am hitting golf balls constantly every day for the last few weeks so I suppose some wear and tear is probable . Would be nice to know if this was a common occurrence for those who play a lot of golf..?
-
Just to add to what saevel25 said .. Never hit a golf ball unless you are working on something or playing, and never hit a golf ball unless you are hitting at a target. If you don't know what to work on at the moment you could just get Ben Hogans book. It's a great place to look before heading to the range.

ESPN's Sport Science: Rory McIlroy
mobosecomin replied to Dr_Fu_Manchu's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
+1 on this. -
Great thread. Some great points made. But logically as it turns out ball striking and accuracy initially more important that the short game. Simply 2 good strikes and your up around the green trying to save Par 3 poor strikes and your up around the green trying to save Bogey I think Pelz was really smart when he stated from 100 yards in as short game as it suited his philosophy. But if you are more than a couple of yards off the green it can not be considered as short game. That would be crazy. I think a sliding rule should be applied. You can't compensate bad ball striking with good short game, you can compensate bad short game with good short game.

Newb Driving Range Questions....
mobosecomin replied to MountainBum's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
If lessons are out of the question at the moment I would recommend picking up Ben Hogans book 5 lesson's. It's cheap and if you follow the instruction in it you would be getting off to a decent start. Also if you have a digital camera you could video yourself swinging so you can see what you are doing. It's said here quite a lot "feel is not real" and that is definitely true in regards to the golf swing. Quite often you will feel like you are going something when you are not. I recently got a full size mirror and put it beside my practice net. I thought I had a good setup but it turns out I was way off. The mirror has been a great aid in fixing it. I would take my address position and then just look up to see if it was any good. I would have wagered money on me having a decent setup before I saw it, it sure did feel good but alas I was way off. Good Luck -
Thanks Jack . Your probably right but it sure dose feel like I am swinging with my body, but more so with my down swing than my back swing. The reason I mentioned my left elbow is since i was looking at some swing sequences of some pros and I did notice that none of them collapsed it as early as I do mine.
-
Hmmm ... just looking at my right elbow ..?

Stretch them stats are spot on. I'm back to a 16 handicap now from 30 yards in a rarely take more than 3 strokes, and if I'm on the green rarely 3 putt, and usually scrape 4 or 5 pars from a round. Where am I leaking all the shots .. off the tee, getting into trouble and not getting up to the green in 2 because my irons are so poor. A 200y hook into the trees or rough and a tap out into 9i range followed by missing the green and then the customary on the green then 2 putt. Thats a double and it's the story of my life this season. You definitely need to move the ball with decent dispersion. If I could(and most golfers of similar Hc for that matter) could get a dispersion of maybe 25y with driver and 15y or so with irons it would make it hard enough to get more than a bogey on any hole. Couple that with a few pars and then the Hc is heading to single digit territory.

Ok so guys been working hard for the last 3 days hitting heaps of balls. Been using a array of different drills but mostly feet together drill to try stop swaying. It's been working quite well with a focus on starting the take away with my arms and not by throwing my weight (by swaying) to my right side. Also I have been paying particular attention to my setup to get some decent side tilt in their and keeping my cheek behind the ball during the swing. All this had been working great to get rid of the sway but I'm still struggling with my head dipping during the backswing . My head dipping is actually counteracting all my effort to stay behind the ball, stop swaying etc... Can't really pin point what exactly I have to do, or the real root cause of the problem. I'm struggling I'm thinking that if I don't get my address position correct and properly load onto my back foot without my head dipping it would be silly to move onto other aspects of the swing that need work. Any more opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks iacas. Ok I won't go changing stuff until I'm sure of what I need to do. Still not sure what I need to do to sort it though.

Thanks uttexas I took this post from a thread called right knee flex. Do you think this would apply to me and be a probable source of my problem. I must say it dose feel like I take a stance with a decent bit of knee flex and then hold it during my swing. Thus restricting hip turn and causing my body to drop during the backswing.?? Quote: Originally Posted by iacas Right - you have to straighten it a little. It's physiological and common sense. (And, you're probably doing your spine angle wrong - but there will be a video in a few days that will address that...) You should find a new instructor. It doesn't depend - every good golfer straightens his right knee a little, and trying to maintain the same flex in the right knee causes all sorts of problems. Except that's exactly the opposite of how your body works... Everyone who answered "maintains the same flex" or whatever the first choice is, try this: squat down almost like you're a catcher (but leave both of your feet on the ground). Get your butt two feet or so off the ground or less. Try to turn your hips. It's physically impossible to turn your hips without losing flex in the knee. If you want to think of it in terms of bones, tendons, whatever: your right hip goes back and up. Your right foot is fixed in place on the ground. Thus, the radius from right hip to foot gets longer - your knee has to straighten to accommodate that. People who try to maintain the flex in their right knee will often slide their hips back, and nobody's ever recommended a swing with that move. Here's some visual proof: regardless of the way you swing, your right knee straightens out and loses its flex. P.S. I tried to word the question and answers in such a way that it made sense, but if you answered "incorrectly" because you thought "straighten" meant to go 100% perfectly straight, there's no need to explain yourself. It's not like you get an A or an F or something. If you knew what the question was asking and still answered "maintain the same flex" then hopefully you've learned something. P.P.S. The deterioration of Adam Scott's Golf Swing is telling.

Hi everyone. Looking for some help with my takeaway / backswing . Sorry video is not great sorry. But hopefully it will give some idea of my problems. My head dips a lot and i'm finding it hard to correct. That is amongst other problems. Any help/drills would be appreciated. Also as an Irishman would just like to congratulate Rory McIlroy on the US Open. Awesome performance.

The Biggest Secret? Slide Your Hips
mobosecomin replied to iacas's topic in Instruction and Playing Tips
I'm sorry but I have to mention it. This is a lower handicap move IMO. The majority of mid to high handicappers I see don't have the footwork or rotation skills necessary to use this to their advantage. While I will not argue that it is a very useful move and adds a lot to the swing but I don't think that you can start with this move and then develop the necessary hip rotation/clearing movement after it. I see so many people who don't clear their hips properly and never get into a position where they can deliver the cub square and on plane. I believe for them to start using this move before evolving their swing to a certain point it will not work and only add problems to the swing. One the other hand if you have a decent swing this could really add something and be great. But if you don't it could easily be a recipe for disaster. Problem is everyone think's they have an "ok" swing and this thread has nearly 50k views. I just wonder how many people are going around with crazy lateral movement in their down swing now. Just my opinion. It's a great thread and agree with a lot that been said, some great analysis iacas.- 949 replies

In a literal sense is what Bob means. But what is referred to by the phrase muscle memory is Motor Learning. And Motor Learning is very important when learning to play golf.! The fact that it happens it the brain and not the muscles is what bothers Bob him being a brain person and all that. But everyone uses the term to describe something they remember with their brain with little conscious effort and do with their muscles so I think Bob the only one confused .
