Flyer from the rough - why?

Can you explain why a ball in the rough would sometimes give you a "flyer" ?

Basically what happens is water and grass gets caught in the groves of the club so when you hit it it has a high launch and low spin. Those two combined will cause the ball to go very far. That's why with drivers you hear people talk about a high launch and low spin.

 913 D2 8.5* with V2 66g stiff shaft

 910F 14.25 with Diamana stiff shaft

It is bad news. I hit a 6 iron 200 yards when I only needed 170. There really is no way to prepare for it either.

So why don't club makers that are constantly looking for more distance reduce groove size or something to replicate this?  Is there a minimum groove size?  Just thinking out loud... I don't know all the specs, rules regarding clubs.

You don't want a flyer on your irons. You'd have no distance control, no backspin, and they wouldn't be playable. Irons are supposed to go distinct distances for each person.

There would still be backspin, just very little out of the rough. The grooves are there to prevent flyers out of the rough. Smaller grooves would just increase the flyer chance out of the rough and not really affect the flight of the ball in the fairway.

Furthermore, the rule change to change the grooves was to punish the pga professionals for hitting errant shots. Unless you never hit a shot to the rough, grooves are a good thing and the deeper the groove, the better chance for contact of the ball to the face of the club, ie spin instead of a knuckle ball out of the rough.

And you now understand why they decided to limit how big the groves can be. Although it does affect the spin on clubs out of the fairway a little bit IMHO. I've noticed the difference in my wedges but I actually kind of like it.

I was mostly speaking in regard to the distance. Although I have not hit confirming grooves and do not know how the spin is affected.

      That was a good watch. When I started working on pelvis in the backswing. I thought, this sounds contradictory to those leg straightening threads on the site. Erik has already done a correction. Then the last lesson we went more down the route of feeling the right knee gains flex. It doesn’t, but the feeling keeps my knee position in a good range. Also, I just realized how much extra work my right hip needed to do to stabilize the body with the proper weight shift. Those glute and hip stabilizers got worked. 🤣 I wish this evolution in the golf instruction happened 20 years ago! 😭

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: squirt to the right due to to much arm not enough turn.       The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
