Wondering if anyone can help me with a few questions.

On my backswing when the shaft becomes parallel to the ground, should i consciously rotate the clubhead to perpendicular to the ground?  When i do this i make noticeably better contact with my irons but have no idea why.  Doesnt seem to affect my driver. Ive had a teaching pro tell me not to do this and keep the clubhead semi closed at this position.

At impact and right through impact, should i be turning the wrists/forearms over, or just let my body's rotation take care of everything?

im a 20 something handicap so you might take my advice with a grain of salt because you're a lower handicap.  One of the few things i focus on is rotating from open to close from my back to forward swing.  Most importantly I try to focus on making it straight at the moment of impact.

Too hard, don't conciously think about any of that.  The timing is extremely difficult.  Just let your body control it leave your wrists out of it

How do you get better if you don't consciously think about it on the range.  I think about it on my practice swings and then just don't think about anything on my actual swing besids striking the ball.  Just my opinion, but i definately agree with you about not consciously thinking about any swing mechanics when you're playing.

I'm going to guess that you want to rotate the clubhead to perpendicular. Sounds like you rotate your shoulders and arms to this point then lift the club such that your arm touches your chin completing the backswing and shoulder rotation. Thats a different process then a continuous combined arm shoulder rotation. My visual says you need to set the club square earlier on the first process. And no on the release unless you are try to hit a low draw. My guess.

if you are lined up correctly with good ball position, make a good backswing and an on-plane downswing with passive wrists, you'll almost always hit it where you want to go. given your body movements are sound and all.

I mean you are correct, I do think about it.  But never on a full swing on the range.  I take practice swings and try to develope that feeling of square in the backswing and square at impact.  Then I take that out of my head and swing the club with the new feeling.  I don't do well with a ton of swing thoughts lol.  In fact the only swing thought I honestly have when i step up to hit a ball  is Tempo.

Find what works for you and then practice that, but I don't conciously think about it on a full swing on a ball.. I try to get that feeling from practice swings

That is actually my biggest problem.  I get out on the course and a lot of times and can't help but think my head position, spine angle and all kinds of other things i shouldn't be thinking about.  I'm really trying to establish a consistent preshot routine and then just think about tempo like you said.

Its really hard to be fluid and smooth when you're thinking about a million things.  Really just try to trust your swing, you might be surprised how easy it is to repeat too!

I do the same exact thing during a round.  It usually takes me a few holes to quiet down all the thoughts and just swing the club.  Im taking the above advice and just let a proper rotation take care of the clubhead.  I think im going to see a pro too and get some instruction on ballstriking.  Im toeing everything lately.  Thanks

    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
