No, I ordered a Nexus 7. I want an Android device so I can see what Jelly Bean is all about and I already have an iPad and an iPhone. And a MBP and a Mac Mini

The iPad Mini is so light and slim, you can fan yourself with it. Really, I tried. It is lighter than my Sony e-ink ereader.

Typing is much easier too, in both landscape and portrait modes.

The screen does not compare to retina, but better than the iPad 1 screen. Chinese characters more readable on the Mini than iPad 1.

If it gets retina and a faster processor at the same price, it will be killer.

Why the hell would Apple release it without retina? Oh wait they will in a week when they release Ipad mini 2 in gun metal grey or some shit.

What is retina?

I was thinking about buying the wife an iPad2 for her birthday/Hanakkah/Christmas (yup, all three!) and I know that is the older version that doesn't have retina.  It does however, have a more reasonable price and the charging port that matches the 8 zillion cords we already have for our iPhones and iPods.

What other reasons to get the retina one instead of the iPad2?

It's a lot faster, has a better camera, etc. But the 2 is still a good thing. You should consider the mini - Dave has them and says they're what the iPad should have been from the start. I think there's something to that (though a bigger one is better as an actual laptop replacement).

And you'll get a new charging cord, of course.

To add to Erik's answer, I have an iPad 1 and I can see down the road where I won't be able to buy the latest apps because it is isn't upgradable to the latest version of iOS. So the newer the device you get, the longer you have till obsolescence. So you might be saving money now if you opt cheaper, but you'll be limiting what you can do with it in the future.

Yeah I have an Ipad 1 and Im eventually gonna change over to the Galaxy Tablet. I already ditched the Iphone for the S3 and love the expandable memory and the fact you can plug in any old micro USB you have laying around and charge the darn thing.

The retina display is simply Apples marketing terminology for an LCD that has a very small pixel pitch - which means you can get more pixels on the display increasing the output resolution.  The new iPad (iPad 3) has the retina display and supports a native resolution of 2048 x 1536 in a 9.7 diagonal.  For comparison sake... Your Full HD television is only 1920 x 1080... Most notebooks were HD 1360 x 768... So basically you are getting very - very high performance display by going to the new iPad with the retina display.

Note, the iPad mini doesn't have a retina display.

Agreed.  This is when I will buy one - mainly to use for when I travel (airplane)....

Note, I have the iPad 2, and my wife has the original iPad.  For those that don't have a tablet, you should really consider getting one for the holidays.  We both use them all the time - typically after we are finished with the day and just reading/browsing the web in bed before we go to sleep.  They are great for that type of use.

I got a Nexus 7 and now have my foot in both iOS and Android camps. The difference between the latest versions of iOS and Android do not merit the crazy flame wars. They're a lot more similar than people give credit for.

joekelly, one of the big items in my bucket list is to read/write/speak Mandarin. Daunting task and started late enough.

The reason I mention Chinese with respect to retina is that Chinese (and similar languages like Japanese, also Arabic) need higher resolution to be read as quickly as you would English the smaller you make the font.

Take a look at a Chinese website (http://www.baidu.com), zoom out and you'll see what I mean. That's why I use a language such as this to test retina. It is a big big deal for foreign languages that are ideographs.Languages like this on the iPad 1 you need to zoom in a bit to get the fuzziness out, which gives me headaches after reading for awhile.

I think the iPad 1 is around 120 ppi, iPad Mini 160ppi. Nexus 7 is ~215 ppi. iPad retina is something like 240ppi?

      He plays from 68.3 / 124.  A combo tee setup of normal mens and seniors.   I play from 69.7/127.   He left after taking a triple on 14 and then leaving.  Which plays to what I think his plan is,   He doesn’t stroke on 14 but would have to take bogey for non completed holes on the way in.   Maybe that’s giving him too much credit, but he found a way to add 4 shots to his score over three holes so….     I looked up his last 20 rounds in GHIN and he has a lot of rounds at easier courses (rating and slope) that are higher than his normal rounds at home.   Since I mostly have his front nine score during the match (36) to go on, he has three nine hole scores at our course posted that are 41-43. I wrote the whole thing up to the head of our golf association who runs all the tournaments.  Our pro is not involved officially in the tournaments because the golf associations are separate from the club.   He’s pretty well known for this, however I was pretty shocked at how well he played carrying a 15.   I think eventually they will do something, a lot of people have complained.  The golf association threw someone out a couple of years ago and it was a three month situation where the guy retaliated.  They probably are hesitant to go thru anything like that again.  That is a rather crazy story I might post about later.
