The kid was a couple of weeks shy of his 17th birthday, which happens to be the legal age of consent in Louisiana.  Because of those two weeks, these women face the prospect of up to 17 years in jail, whereas, if they had just waited until the Homecoming game, then all would be fine.

Certainly, there are other issues involved with the student/teacher/trust dynamic, but the rape issue wouldn't exist.

There are several states around the country where the legal age of consent is 16.  So without waiting the two weeks, if they'd have just driven across the border, they'd also have been good to go.
