I was watching the European tour on the GC and a player had a monstrous putter with 3 balls on it like the Odyssey 2 ball. I did not catch his name but he was wearing a hat with Callaway on it so he is probably using an Odyssey putter. Has anyone else seen or heard about this thing?

Yeah, we've

Thanks for the heads up on the article, but have you seen a picture of this thing. If you can't putt with it you can definately use it for home protection.

I've seen it in use. Charles Howell III was using it at the Tour Championship. It's about the size of a dinner plate, but really no bigger than the old(er) Ping Doc 17.

Those ginormous putters look sooo bad ... until you start using them to knock in the 5-footers that used to give you trouble. Then, they look sooo good.

I would never use a truly odd-looking driver (Power Pod?) or irons (Cleveland VAS). But with putters, I figure anything that works is OK with me.

BTW, the new putter from Odyssey is called the Tri-Ball SRT. Dave Pelz still owns the name "Three-Ball."

Just kiddin'. SRT, btw, stands for "Saturn Ring Technology." Like the rings around Saturn, the TBSRT has a metal ring around the back and sides. Like the Cameron Futura Phantom mallet, but 250x bigger.

I think you are wrong I believe it is called SRT because it is the SIZE of Saturn. Never knew that about Pelz either, thats gotta be uncomfortable.

I suppose that if a three ball putter works then its good, but I can't help but think about the razor arms race. First you had the single blade, then you had the two blades, then three, and then Gillette (I think) releases the almighty quad. You've gotta be kidding me. Apologies to all of you quad users... two does it for me.

My wife bought me the quad and the thing must weigh about 6 pounds. Shaving in the shower was nearly impossible, as between the pressure from the shower head and the slipperyness I about cut my throat.

Problem is I can't find Schick Tracer blades anymore, and I have had that razor for about 12 years :(

If the lubrication strip works so well, then why do I need the shaving cream?

Well, I finally got to mess around with this thing at a golf shop...sorry if I offend anyone but this thing is too weird. I actually felt strange using it but I'm pretty sure it would protect the rest of my clubs from the rain. On a positive note it was surprisingly light. Unfortunatly, it looked more like I was using a metal detector to check for treasure under the astroturf in the store than trying to sink a 10' putt.

Chris,

I thought the three ball felt light too. I mean, for something that big, it looked like it should feel heavier. It was easy they come at lining up putts though.

One thing I noticed when putting with this beast is that its very resistive to opening or closing it during the swing. Much more so than a normal blade putter. I still think it looks more like a cattle brand though.

They're all center-shafted, right? No, they're all heel-shafted? Well then that's just not right: heel shafted should swing open and closed fairly easily. Bummer.

I've never been a fan of the "ball" putters, nor the "let's put an insert in an insert in an insert" thing... but that's just me.

I too was surprised how light it was when I was hitting it at the golf shop a couple of weeks ago. I was also surprised how well the ball felt coming off the face. Odyssey really does know what they are doing with their different face inserts.

But back to how light it is. To me it actually feels cheap, like it is barely held together by chinsy plastic parts. It honestly looks and feels like something you would buy for $19.99 at 3 A.M. from Ron Popeil or from an over-caffinated British guy with bad teeth.

So whereas the feel off the face may inspire confidence the 'cheap' manufacturing process does the opposite. Add in the fact that it does look like a metal detector (not a cattle brand, you would KILL the poor things) means this is not the putter for me.

The 2 Ball SRT though looks manageable. I wonder if it will seem as cheaply made as the 3 ball though. (I know Odyssey doesn’t really make poorly crafted items, and maybe this is just inherent of all their White Hot products. I know the White Steel seems much more solid).

The Tri-Ball does feel pretty light, but I wonder how much of that is because you expect something that big to weigh 5 pounds. The body of the putter is milled aluminum, which is something new for Odyssey. Then the SRT part is a zinc alloy. That pushes the weight out to the perimeter, which wouldn't be as pronounced if the body of the putter was steel and not aluminum (or aluminium for our Canadian/UK friends).

I wasn't a fan of the White Steel concept when it first came out. But it feels good in the Tri-Ball. Maybe because aluminum itself always feels mushy to me, and the steel makes the putter have a more crisp feeling. Those old Zebra mallets always felt dead to me. Same with the old Bobby Grace putters before he started using inserts.

I wouldn't write off the Tri-Ball (or ANY putter) until you've rolled a few with it on a real grass green outside. I didn't think I'd like the Tri-Ball until I played 9 holes with one in Orlando, and I ended up loving it. Much easier to control distance on longer putts than I expected. And the circular SRT weights made it easier to line up little breaking putts. With the original 2-Ball putters I always had trouble on anything that wasn't dead straight because of the alignment discs. The SRT wings make it look rounder, like a traditional mallet.

    • Day 113: 4/18/24 Stack training progress check after finishing my 6th program, and 4th Full Speed Spectrum Training session, which is recommended for my next program.     Gained 1 mph with driver, 195 g, 95g. Maintained with 280 g , and gained 2 with 145 g. Lost 1 mph on both lead and trail arm. Felt like I lost distance in my last round…
    • Please forgive the sweaty shirt.  Just got off the treadmill and decided to do my Evolvr drill.
    • I'd agree that 4w seems like the right play here. I'm not a course designer or anything but that hole looks like it could be so much more fun if everyone played from those front 2 tee boxes that are right outside your shot cone and they cut down most of the trees down that left side of the fairway. That would give risk reward to long hitters who want to try and push it up to that left fairway, allow more players to reach that second fairway, and still allowing it to be perfectly playable for someone who only hits driver like 150yds off the tee.   Yeah it looks like 4iron aimed at that inside edge of the right bunker is the play there, especially if you don't expect a 20mph tailwind again. If it is down wind again, 5iron would be just fine too, it'd still get you inside 150yds for your approach.  Keep in mind tee marker locations too, you measured that one from the back so if those tee markers are moved all the way towards the front of that box then 5 iron is probably best just to be sure that right bunker is never in play.
    • Day 1: worked on my drill for my arms.
    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
