Would a 56 produce more spin then a 60 in the same exact wedge?

Also depends if you accelerating down on your backspin. For me my spin milled 60 spins more then my spin milled 56 but i dont know

Backspin is essentially the rotation that is placed upon the ball by the clubface in relation to how far below the equator of the ball contact is made. I imagine the key to the equation is bounce: the more bounce a wedge has, the less far down on the ball the clubface will make contact, and thus the less backspin that will be generated. So, if the 56* wedge has less bounce than the 60* wedge, it well hit further down on the ball, and more backspin can be generated despite the lesser loft.

I may be wrong but I think the original poster was ignoring all other factors apart from loft. So say you had 2 wedges exactly the same apart from loft, and you used exactly the same swing to hit exactly the same ball from exactly the same position, which would put more spin on the ball!

I think thats my quota of exactly's used for the day!

Not sure actually.... a lot of me wants to say the 56 as the ball has more time to 'roll' up the clubface creating spin where as the 60 just sort of pops the ball up with little spin.

I could be very wrong though.

More loft will create more spin all else being equal: same type of wedge, same grooves, contact on the same part of the club face, same ball, same swing, etc. However, I think that the difference in spin between those two lofts is fairly minimal, if you can even tell at all. I can spin all my wedges well, if I have a good lie. I just pick a different wedge for the amount of carry and trajectory that I need.

The more loft, the higher the ball flight, so the softer it will land even with no spin. So I guess when you put equal spin on both a 56* ballflight and a 60, the 60 will have more spin on the green.

The 60 definitely. Very evident if you every watch Phil Mickleson hitting the wedges. He puts a lot more movement on the 60 and 64 that he carries than the 56.

I use a 54, 60 and 64* (54 and 60 are CG14, 64 is X forged vintage)

So it becomes zip grooves vs mack daddy grooves

All thing equal, I can pull out my old 60* knock of wedge with weak grooves, and not produce ANY backspin. My personal oberservation using the same swing, very similar clubs... grrroves make all the difference.

I spin my 60 the most of the 3 due to swing speed typically on my 64. I back off a bit on the 64 or the spin generated by it would hurt more then help.

I hit a good 50+ balls 2 weekends ago with full "go for it" type swings with the 64* at a par 3 course mid day with no one really around... so had plenty of time to practice with it.

Was way to easy to get 15+ feet of spin with it and the ball covers were a mess as it shaved them up pretty badly. The spin on the 64* being swung aggressively like I can with my 54 or 60* could hurt your game more then help if not controlled.

I really don't see how these posters can tell the difference between the exact same club but only four degrees of loft difference. I would never be able to tell to be honest.

    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
