Hi Guys,

I'm new to this forum and think it's great. I wanted to know from you guys the typical swing thoughts you have before you hit. I know you aren't supposed to think about anything else except your target spot, but it's very hard for me.

I've been playing about two years, have a consistent draw and today, started to slice like crazy. I know it's turning my hands over, but I hate to have to think that when I hit to "turn my hands" over. I also think about keeping my spine straight so I don't move and chunk it. Then I think of my tempo "same way up, same way down."

What are the best swing thoughts you guys have (and the funniest)?

Thanks!
e

I won't say I don't have swing thoughts, but for the most part I'm really not thinking of anything unless there's something I've been having an issue with, like turning over my wrists.

I have "triggers" or "checkpoints" in my swing and If I don't feel them I try to back off or know at impact my shot is off.

On the backswing keep hands low
Feel my right thigh tighten as weight transfers and my coil begins
Left shoulder touches chin, my coil ends
At this point I just swing. If the balls been going left or right I adjust my timing on getting my hands turned over but I usually work that on my 2 practice swings.

One thing that I've read and learned that really has helped, is envision the shot. Play the shot in slow motion, watching the trajectory, line, and landing in your minds eye before hitting it.

And welcome to the forums, lotsa great knowledgable peeps here.

Nice and slow on the backswing, initiate downswing from the ground up, hold the lag as long as I can.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

In my mind I say the word "seventeen" on my backswing. I saw Vijay talking about this on the Golf Channel as a way to slow your backswing down (which is my main problem). Once you start saying seventeen, start your backswing. At the end of seventeen, you should be paused at the top of your swing and ready to start the downswing.

Hope it helps, it worked for me!

Thanks so much guys I'll give those tips a try. I'm sure some of you can relate to this. I've never had the yips/shanks on chips to the right. I couldn't shake them for about 2 months and finally found out it was because of deceleration and standing to close to the ball. I fixed it. Now that my short game is pretty decent, my ball striking has issues.

I usually draw, but lately have been slicing because on my backswing, I'm thinking about it too much. I know it's because I'm not releasing the club and square with my right hand at impact. Just got to fix it at the range. I've started chunking but can fix it by keeping my spine straight/not moving it. Just kind of frustrating.

I did finally learn though to play the slice. Shot a 58 on the front w/ a 45 on the back and first time I actually drove a hole about 301. Thank God I didn't 3 putt!

Thanks again,
e

Great. I think I'm just going to have to keep on playing and when I'm at the range, just think of where I'm going to hit it and nothing else.

I'm too analytical for this game...lol...which I think is a great challenge.

I play best when I use my conscious mind to block itself out of my game.

Here's a replay:
"Ba-a-ck, Eighty, Through"

It's a modification of a tip from The Inner Game of Golf by Timothy Gallwey.
He advises using "Back, Through" as he advises tennis players to think "Back, Hit"
I threw in the "Eighty" to tip me off that me I've probably had enough backswing.
That doesn't leave me enough time to think about how I transition or any of that other crud.

I think about alignment and posture but the final though in my mind each and every time is "Tempo". So long as I have consistent tempo everywhere in my swing I find that everything else just falls into place.

My one constant swing thought is to "swing through the ball." All the elaborate thoughts and speaking out loud (yeah, I do that sometimes )happens before the shot.

Also, not a swing thought but something I do. Take a deep breath before each shot.

Thanks so much guys. Everyone here is great. I'll let you know how it goes as I have a tournament Wednesday for the local Chamber of Commerce. Would love one day to get a golf award for something.

Now that I think about it. I had the yips on my chips (shank right off the hossle) because I was decelerating. Maybe I started going right with the slice because I was thinking too much about my tempo and just like you guys say, just hit through the ball. I started slowing my swing down (which is kind of not natural for me), so my hands came late after my body and I slice.

Ahhhh...answered my own question...LOL

Thanks again guys. It's nice to know I'm not the only crazy amateur golf addict out there!

Went to the range today and hit it well thanks to everyone! No more slicing. I think it was also more of my setup which is about 40% of the swing.

All I thought of was:

1) First, where I want to aim it and draw it too (I play with a draw)

2) Through my swing, I say my son's name that passed after 6 days. It's Christian Trace A. and pretty long enough to help my tempo.

Hope I can do the same tomorrow.

Thanks again guys!!!

Vijay's tip is a good one since it focuses on rhythm. When Sam Snead was asked what he thought during his swings in competition against Ben Hogan, he asked for a microphone. After he clipped it on, he took a club and said out loud what was in his head----"One, two, three". He also said that good dancers usually are good golfers because they understand and use good rhythm. If your fundamentals are sound, and you have practiced them on the range, your one swing thought should be rhythm, not positions or particular parts of the body (head, shoulder, knee, etc). In fact, your practice should concentrate on the same thing. I am not able to go to the range or practice area as much as I used (which was daily). So, now, I practice in the backyard, and many times do not even hit plastic balls. All I do is take 30 or more practice swings with various clubs and think "One, two, three". My handicap has remained the same (4) even though I play only once a week as a maximum, and practice primarily in the backyard (daily). Again, your fundamentals have to be sound for this to work.
