I am not only referring to the group ahead of you, but also guys in your own group who insist on taking 10 practice swings and treating every shot like its the one to win the US Open.

Im the kind of guy who walks up and hits it. So as I wait for other players, i get frustrated and it definitely affects my game.

How do you cope?

Text people, my phone has teris or Oregon Trail on it so i can play either of those, or juggle a ball on my wedge.

I try not to watch. And I have to try really hard not to let it affect me. I'm proned to rush my preshot routine after a long wait. It's like I feel a need to pick up the pace of the group. But honestly I have been know to give them the Boomhauer golf tip from King of The Hill...."speed it the hell up!"

I have one friend who plays at an excrutiatingly slow pace. My solution is simple: I don't play golf with him.

What if you timed them? I once told my group in a tournament to speed up a little or I was going to call the proshop for a ranger.

What if you timed them?

Thats what we had to do with my brothers friend. He is a ball hunter. He will spend as much time as he can searching for a lost ball. After the first time, I got the timer out. As soon as he started looking I started it, and at 5 minutes I would offer him a new ball from my bag. He never accepted, but it made him give up the search.

5 minutes?! If someone in my party can't find their ball in less than a minute, I tell them go to your bag, get a ball and play it. I only look for 30-45 seconds for a lost ball unless I'm positive the ball should be in play and is close to me. To take up time for a slow player, I usually stand off to the side and juggle a golf ball with one of my wedges.

I get your point, but 5 minutes is the rule. You are permitted to spend 5 minutes searching.

I like the "don't play with them" option the best. I golfed with a guy a few weeks ago who took about 8 practice swings for every shot, and he kind of sucked, so there was really no point. What, he was practicing hitting it OB? It drove me nuts since we weren't playing ready golf and I had to sit there waiting and waiting and waiting for him to shank it into the woods.

I now bring 3 cigars with me per round (even in the morning) so that if (when) I get fidgety I can light one up and have something to keep myself occupied. I keep thinking we should be playing as fast as possible, and forgetting to enjoy the day. Hard to be aggro when you're sitting there with a nice cigar though.

I don't play with them, but if I have to, I text a friend or eat something. I have a high handicap, but I play as fast as everyone else, it's the people with 70 practice swings I hate.

Depends on my day. If I'm having a terrible day and the group ahead is a hole behind, then I hit into them. (I call four though) If not. I just call the pro shop to have an ambassador come over.

Nothing kills my game faster than slow play. I'll usually be the first person to say something like, 'guys, we need to get moving here ... we're holding up the course.'

But the best advice so far is don't play with slow people IF you have a choice! It can really get to you if you let it.

Seriously. Your humor eludes me on this one. I pray that you never hit anyone.

Topic-wise: I play with "that guy" quite frequently. I just try and go to my happy place & stop talking to him--at least that keeps him from getting any slower. --LBB

I'd try to identify the source of the slow play and make some suttle suggestions,... there are a lot of little things you can do to speed up play,...
when my group gets behind I'll try to watch and make sure everyones doing things to incourage fast play like parking the cart or putting your bag on the right side or the green nearest the next tee box for a quick getaway,...
taking a few clubs with you when you go out looking for a ball,.. everyone watch everyone's ball flight to assure you can helep find the balls,... know when it's your turn,... be ready,...
here's one people rarely do,... after a shot instead of going to your bag to put away your clubs just jump in the cart and take off clubs in hand,... put them away at the next stop when either your playing oartner or you are going back to the bag,... so many people spend a lot of time digging in and around their bags,...
another thing is have your clubs in order in your bag,... short clubs in the front compartment, middle irons in the middle, long irons in th back compartment, my woods on the side compartment (that's my bag set up anyway)
I played with a guy the other day he could never find any of his clubs,.... they were all over the place,... I organized his bag when he was in the John,...

No one likes to play slow but hey whats the rush, use the time constructivly think about your next shot, take on some water, just dont let it bother you.

Something I do find more annoying is people who take their mobile phones onto the course .Poor form IMO

    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
