In the coming weeks, I'll be interviewing (for the podcast ) people at Titleist regarding the fall equipment. I'll probably do entire (separate) shows on the 909 drivers, the 909 fairway woods and hybrids, and the new line of Vokey wedges.

In the past we've come up with the questions ourselves, and while we still may ask the majority of them this time, I'd like to give everyone here the chance to ask a question.

To list a question (or questions) for consideration, please post them in this thread in the manner in which I've posted below. Serious questions only, please.

Format for asking questions is:

Topic or Subject Here
Ask your question here?

as in:

909 Drivers
The 909D3 seems to be the sibling of the 907D4, which was never released. Everyone seems excited about the D3, but with its lower launch and lower spin, is it really a driver suited for a large number of people or would most people likely be better off in the D2?

or

909 Hybrids
While many companies offer several different hybrid variations, Titleist offers only one. Is the 909.H really a "jack of all trades" or do you feel the performance characteristics can be changed by, for example, choosing a different shaft well enough that only one clubhead model needs to be offered?

Vokey Wedges

Not specific to Titleist, but the change in grove technology rules bugs the heck out of me; so, perhaps you might raise that topic and ask how Titleist intends to address the new rules in their Spin Milled line of wedges? I.e., is spin milling to become a thing of the past?

Titleist is not releasing new balls in 2008. I'm not going to ask questions about golf balls.

Keep your questions related to the FALL 2008 clubs only.

This is your chance to ask a question of a senior Titleist executive. Anyone have any other questions? I'm sending 11 driver-related questions off now, but they can still be amended... fairway woods and wedges are still wide open.

Will the new black nickel finish wear quickly, or will it be more durable and not wear off quickly like the Oil Can finish?

909 fairway woods

Titleist doesn't set those prices.

I guess one question i have is about the 909 d2/3, are the only shafts that will be offered on it in stores the voodoo and the diamana blue? what makes the voodoo and diamana blue better that they will no longer offer the v2(shaft i want) or the graphite design ys-6 as stock shafts?

Are they going to broaden their range of stock shafts? What are the factors that determine the two that they currently use ie Titleist Diamana Blue 75 Fairway and Titleist Aldila VooDoo Fairway.

No AK JR said that he doesn't get why he has to pay more for the "less exotic" voodoo.

No he said "now I have to pay more for a less exotic (i think) shaft that the aldila voodoo" But I'm sure he typed that instead of than. And without the typo it would read "now I have to pay more for a less exotic (i think) shaft than the aldila voodoo"

That was off topic, and I am done. Erik since were on the topic of shafts I have a question about them. I have heard 2 different stories about the "Made For" Titleist shafts. I have heard that they are a different and cheaper quality shaft then the aftermarket shaft. And I have heard that they are the exact same shaft as the aftermarket shaft. Which is true? Thanks.

I won't speak for Erik but when the Titleist rep came to my local golfsmith last week I asked this question, and to be honest he seemed almost offended. He said that they are the exact same thing, and will look identical barring a little bit of Titleist paint on them (Titleist logo)...and that "little bit of paint" won't change how the shaft plays. IOW, it is the real deal according to him.

Erik I have some questions to add.... hybrid Why the high gloss on the 909? From the photos I have seen, the glare does not look enticing. Have any of their tour players mentioned any concerns? Wedge With the new sole grinds. As the tour players have many different custom grinds I'm sure and there are no doubt many ideas for types of grinds how did Vokey and Titleist narrow down the list and select the grinds that they would release tot he public. What type of player profile/swing do these grinds fit? By the way when I read your sneak preview article I really liked this Yoda-like line :D
gone is the "triangle" found in the 907D1.

I don't think you'll necessarily have to pay more. I think you may get them for the same price - they'll just have to be custom ordered.

What are the factors that determine the two that they currently use ie Titleist Diamana Blue 75 Fairway and Titleist Aldila VooDoo Fairway.

The shafts that perform best, overall, in the clubheads and offer the best value to their customers.

I have heard that they are a different and cheaper quality shaft then the aftermarket shaft. And I have heard that they are the exact same shaft as the aftermarket shaft. Which is true? Thanks.

More the latter. They're tweaked VERY slightly (usually the torque and sometimes the weight, rarely much else) to perform BETTER in the clubheads. A shaft with a little more torque feels a bit better and performs better for the target customer.

The shafts are nowhere near "crappier" versions. The shaft manufacturers wouldn't let crappy versions of their shafts get out there.
Why the high gloss on the 909? From the photos I have seen, the glare does not look enticing. Have any of their tour players mentioned any concerns?

The old drivers, fairway metals, etc. used to be slightly shiny (kinda "sparkly") like that, right? Titleist player tests everything extensively - I don't think anyone's expressed any problems.

Wedge

The different grinds are just for the different lofts, you know, right? You can't order a 54.10 with black nickel and an "M" grind. Just the first two are options - but across the whole wedge line, there are several different grinds.

Okay thanks, that was what I was thinking, I wouldn't think that they would let crappier versions out either. And when the Ping guys were here in Alaska they told me that for 85% of golfers the TFC shaft will perform best in the G10 because it was designed to optimize the performance in the head. Thanks again for clearing that up for me.

hey Erik, I have a question about the 909f3. and it could be a coincidence too. but every online store i went to has the diamana blue 65 and voodoo available for the 909f2, yet they only have the voodoo available for the 909f3 and not the diamana blue 75. is the f3 with a blue 75 not available yet or did they decide to can that shaft and just make it a voodoo with the f3?

    • I don’t measure my intake either. I generally have a black coffee, a bottle of soda, some sweet tea at home, and anything in between is water. An ice cold bottle of water is one of my favorite things. It feels like an immediate refresher for my body. I’ll admit that I need to drink a little more though.
    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
