So would I be insane if I decided to move to So Cal from the midwest (St. Louis, MO)???? The company I work for has open positions there and it might be fun to try for a bit. Of course my salary will have to be increased to offset the higher cost of living, but I think it would be fun for a bit. Change of pace. I am 26, married, and no kids yet.

What do the Californians think?

Well I do not know the location. We have an office in Newport Beach and San Diego. I work for a company that builds hospitals, so we work all over the place. I build houses too so I would like to find a lot and build a home. Is Cali laid back like everyone says it is? I am really tired of the rush this and rush to do that mentality.

I lived in California most of my life and never found it to be "laid back".

Now, Hawaii... that's laid back.

Southern California also has smog that you can taste and it burns your eyes. Seriously.

San Diego is more laid back than Newport Beach. Finding a lot and building your won home...well, you're going to need to go inland for that unless you have milliions for a lot in Orange County.

Example: Corona del Mar, someone just bought a huge lot for $15.5M, and just tore down the house and are rebuilding a new one.

Maybe not that extremein some places, but at least $1M or so in the nicer areas of Orange County.

take the job, and see for yourself. you have no kids to uproot so I would do it. If I were I your shoes I would. When I was 26, I had just bought a big empty house, and I worked all over the place because I had no kids to worry about...girlfriend, at the time, would travel with me most of the time.

I spent a lot of time in Lafayette, CA a couple of years ago and that went on ALL the time. The land is what costs the money out there, the houses are a fraction of the price of land.

Hopefully I'll be doing the same thing the OP hopes to do in a few months.

Ya I was looking at land that was inland. Lots were in the 200-400 range which seems about right

I have a friend who is a civil engineer (Imagineer) for Disney. He built his own house in Menifee/Sun City area. It was a long time ago, but I think he paid somewhere around $75k for 5 acres or so. That's well inland though.

Funny, a friend of mine just left Los Angeles for the midwest (Kansas). But she didn't play golf, so it isn't as big a deal for her to leave this nice weather!

See if you can get a 3-month position out here. Get an Oakwood apartment or similar, see if you and the spouse like it out here. If you do, move on out here. And bring your clubs! Even if you get here on Thanksgiving and are only staying for 3 months, you can still play plenty in that time!

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Yeah, and all we need is yet another transplant to clog up our roads even more. Stay in the Midwest, that's what I say. I love the midwest, been to Chicago and Indiana a few times, certainly a great place to be. In all seriousness, San Diego is a hell of a town, especially for a young couple. Very nice atmosphere there, and many things to do. Although you may have a hard time with the wife around and all the "California girls" I'd invest in a nice pair of very dark sunglasses. Newport is a bit hoitee-toitee, and more than a bit pricey.

Well I am putting my request in today to be transfered to a different division (SoCal). We are really excited. I guess it all depends now on the pay.

Actually a more commonly heard west-coast greeting these days is, "Welcome to Oregon, now go home you Californian"

Thank god for the rain, else we'd be running you guys off with sticks and pitchforks and torches (after living here for 13 years now, I think I can officially shed my identity as a Californian

You've got not worries of any of us SoCal folks being interested in Oregon or "Porkland" home of the other white meat.

I was kidding, EJ... but seriously, you would be surprised. There are TONS of Californians up here - my wife is from LA and her parents moved here from Burbank 5 years ago.

Anyway back to topic, as a California native - I can't recommend it, but perhaps I OD'd on all the warm weather, smog and over-population during the first 25 years of my life.

if you like clouds, don't move to so cal. cuz there aren't any there.

They will beat their swords into golf clubs and their spears into putters. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. Old Tom Morris 2:4
