I have difficulty controling my distance on bump and run shots. Specifically those around 20 yards. I've worked with my pro on these and practice continually. My fundamentals are sound, i.e. stance, ball position, club angle etc. I just seem to have no feel and will leave as many short as long. Typically I use a delofted PW for these shots. That's what I feel most comfortable with. Any suggestions, drills or whatever would be appreciated.

If your struggling with distance control my pro tells me to forget and the flag and instead of of aim for that focus on where you want the ball to land. The more you pratice the better you will become and knowing where to land the ball depending on the green speed, slope and lie. Using this method i find it stops me worrying about chunking it or hitting it too hard and into the rough.

Hope its help you out.

On the bump and run I rely, almost entirely, on feel. Once you get solid fundamentals engrained, all you can do is practice and develop a feel of the shot.
Solid fundamentals: hands ahead of the ball, (for me) very slightly open stance, soft grip, narrow stance, and play the ball just inside the back foot. then just take a nice smooth swing with a varied backswing length * remembering to keep your hands ahead of the ball *.

So if your fundamentals are sound (as your pro says they are), in a nutshell, what you need to do is practice, practice and more practice.

Along with hands ahead, remember to keep accelerating through the ball or you'll chunk it for sure. That requires practice to get the right feel to have the confidence to hit it squarely. When I don't practice, I second guess my speed and slow the club just before impact... *CHUNK*

I agree with all above. I want to add that a shorter backswing ensures that you will accelerate through the ball.

For bump and run distance controll you can try to eliminate the wrist action - not allowing the ball to check up, but rather run out. You can imagine the shot were just a long putt, and base the distance on that.

What I got in a lesson you cannot do during a round, but you can practice it. It looks funny, but works for me:

I take a ball and toss it underhand to where I want it to land at the speed I want it to roll. Remembering that feel, I take my shot to bump and run it the same way. It's amazing how much it helps. I guess the idea is over time to not need to throw it!

Also I bump and run with an 8 iron if it will clear the rough/fringe (if I want it to clear the fringe, that is). I find it easier than a PW, even a delofted one. YMMV.

consistency with distance control starts with practicing and experimenting to find out what works for you.

1) distance control with the same tempo on every shot and control the distance with the length of your backswing and follow through, make sure you are accelerating through the ball.
2) solid consistent contact
3) relax and have a loose grip
4) try chipping with your putting stroke.

try experimenting with different clubs for your bump and run the lower the club the more forgiveness so try the hybrid , 7 iron as well as all the clubs including your PW.

    • I honestly believe if they play longer tees by 300-400 yards, closer to or over 7,000 yards, more rough, tougher greens, women's golf will become much more gripping.  BTW, if it weren't for Scottie killing it right now, men's golf isn't exactly compelling.
    • Day 542, April 26, 2024 A lesson no-show, no-called (he had the wrong time even though the last text was confirming the time… 😛), so I used 45 minutes or so of that time to get some good work in.
    • Yeah, that. It stands out… because it's so rare. And interest in Caitlin Clark will likely result in a very small bump to the WNBA or something… and then it will go back down to very low viewership numbers. Like it's always had. A small portion, yep. It doesn't help that she lost, either. Girls often don't even want to watch women playing sports. My daughter golfs… I watch more LPGA Tour golf than she does, and it's not even close. I watch more LPGA Tour golf than PGA Tour golf, even. She watches very little of either. It's just the way it is. Yes, it's a bit of a vicious cycle, but… how do you break it? If you invest a ton of money into broadcasting an LPGA Tour event, the same coverage you'd spend on a men's event… you'll lose a ton of money. It'd take decades to build up the interest. Even with interest in the PGA Tour declining.
    • Oh yea, now I remember reading about you on TMZ!
